FOMO is alive and well in the C-Suite. "There is very little actually adoption going on, the technology is unstable and highly error prone, programming using AI is well nigh impossible, and there are surprisingly few good use cases for why one should use AI, and the models are degrading as their own slop is poisoning their training data, but IF YOU DON'T ADOPT AI RIGHT NOW, YOU'LL REGRET IT!!!" This is quite literally where we are right now. There are variations of the theme: "You know, we should be able to tweak the algorithms and solve all of the hallucination problems, then this will work perfectly." "If we get enough data centers in place, we should be able to scale to AGI." "The market just hasn't matured enough. We'll hit the inflection point any day now, and .... boom! The sky's the limit." "If we just make the government say that we can use all the creative content of the planet for free, then we have a real good business model." I could go on, but it's just too depressing. This reminds me of the old story about a boy with a cruel father, the latter who proceeded to drop a load of horse manure in front of the Christmas tree one year. When the boy saw the pile, he smiled in glee and grabbed a shovel. The father, shocked, asked what he was doing, and the boy replied "With all this crap, there has to be a horse in there SOMEWHERE!" A question comes to mind when I hear about investments being made in the $100s of billions of dollars on AI and AGI. Where is that money coming from? Billionaires do not become so by spending their own money. Instead they use their wealth as collateral to get outsized loans that are often dozens or even 100s of times larger than their initial investment (no matter how questionable the loan), they tap pension funds as backers, and they lobby their captive congress critters to part with taxpayer money to be part of the next big thing. If they see things beginning to go pear-shaped (to borrow a metaphor from Terry Pratchett) they quietly sell off their initial stake to the bigger fool and wake away with minimal exposure when the whole thing collapses. Sometimes they even short their own stock through proxies, to make more money when the bubble bursts. Who usually ends up left holding the bag? The banks, the pension funds, the day traders, companies that bet their futures on the next big thing by firing their most expensive labor, and so on, all of whom then go crying to Uncle Sam to be made whole. This happens of course, because these companies and funds are all supposedly too big to fail, and this consequently causes taxes to go up because the government has to cover more interest on debt. This day will come, probably some time in 2025. Whoever becomes president will have to deal with this.

India's technology landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with GCCs at the forefront of this change. So, what are GCCs? Global Capability Centers (GCCs) are in-house units set up by companies in strategic global locations. These centers manage a diverse array of activities, including IT services, research and development, finance, HR, and more. GCCs offer companies enhanced control over processes and outputs, ensuring direct influence on quality, innovation, and cultural alignment. According to EY's report, ‘Future of GCCs in India - A Vision 2030,’ the number of GCCs in India could be as high as 1,700. By 2026, this figure is expected to grow to 2,100 and could potentially hit 2,500 by 2030. While GCCs have been established for several years, they are currently experiencing a surge in prominence due to several converging factors. Key drivers of this growth include: - The expansion of software exports, a major component of India's service exports, with continued growth in offshoring services. - The availability of a skilled workforce, particularly in technology. - The expansion into tier-2 cities and satellite centers. - Favorable government policies and improved infrastructure. But will GCCs negatively impact Indian technology services companies? Possibly, but not necessarily. Technology service firms that depend primarily on offshore staff augmentation could encounter difficulties. To remain competitive, it's crucial for these companies to expand their offerings to include consulting, technology, and system integration, while also moving towards delivery models centered around managed services. While this shift may be challenging, it is critical for their long-term success and sustainability. Conversely, Indian IT firms stand to benefit from the rise of GCCs in the country.
