Leading FMCG companies like Dabur, Hul, and Marico indicate a drop in the ad spend-to-revenue ratio. One of the top spenders in the country’s advertising market is the FMCG sector. Comprising nearly one-third share (Rs. 31,000 cr in 2023) of the total Adex. The surprising news is, it maintained its momentum even during the pandemic & economic downfalls. However, in recent times, there has been a decline in the pace with the consistent revenue growth. According to a financial report obtained from Tofler, ad spends of Hul, Dabur & Marico are not growing in proportion to their revenue. Dabur has witnessed a decline of 6.9% and 20% in FY22 and FY23. On the other hand, Hul’s and Marico witnessed 11.8% to 8.1% and 9.9% to 8.6%. Seeing the current scenario, many industry experts predict that the gap between FMCG firms' revenue and Adex will grow, considering the internet expansion globally. Zudio is an exceptional success story in an otherwise mixed retail/ecom performance of the Tata Group. India's glaring income inequality is unfortunate, but brings definite opportunities for businesses. Zudio, with 600+ physical stores and 80% of those in non metro locations, is a validation of the huge opportunity that lies beyond the top 1% of India. The rich are getting richer and some brands are premiumising to cater to them. Notable examples are automobiles, real estate and liquor. All three categories have seen average selling price surge over the last one decade, and more so post-2020. But a much larger opportunity, and perhaps easier to tap, lies within the 40-50 crore people who live in non-metro urban areas. Zudio has done exceptionally well in this context. With deep penetration in non-metro locations, it's bringing fast fashion to the true masses. These are places where qcom won't dare to reach, because the economies of scale won't work out due to smaller populations, preference for local brands and smaller skus, and lower order sizes. But despite 600+ stores and ambitious growth plans, I believe Zudio will only be able to capture a tiny share of the market. The market is huge yet fragmented, and at least 100 more brands should be ready to enter the fray and carve out their own share. This non-metro aspiring class of India is about to launch a relentless pursuit of growth, and brands that are ready to serve this market will win big in the years to come.

HUL Boosts Ad Spend in Q1 FY25: Key Data Insights HUL mentioned that the e-commerce platform has been a strong growth driver, growing ahead of the market and at thrice of modern trade growth. This suggests that HUL is effectively leveraging e-commerce channels to reach customers, and its advertising efforts may be tailored accordingly. HUL's ad spend increased by 11.6% to Rs 1,681 crore in Q1 FY25 from Rs 1,505 crore in the same period last year. This suggests HUL is prioritising brand marketing and promotion to drive sales growth. The company's standalone net profit also grew by 3% YoY to Rs 2,538 crore between April-June (Q1) FY25. This indicates that HUL's marketing strategy is effective in generating returns on investment. HUL's revenue from operations marginally increased by 1.57% to Rs 15,166 crore from Rs 14,931 crore in the same period last fiscal. While revenue growth is modest, HUL's focus on brand-building through advertising could lead to higher sales in the coming quarters. In the June quarter of FY25, the company's Home Care segment contributed the most to its overall business at 37%. This highlights the significance of HUL's home care products and potentially indicates a strategic focus on this category through advertising. Overall, HUL's data suggests a strategic approach to advertising that is contributing to both brand growth and profitability. Marketers can follow HUL's example by closely monitoring advertising ROI and strategically allocating resources across different channels to maximise their impact. Point to ponder Data range Q1 2018 to Q2 2024 as per #Counterpoint for the top 5 smartphone brands in India. 1. The highest ever share at which a brand has been No. 1 is 31% by #xiaomi in Q1 2018 and Q1 2020. 2. The lowest share at which a brand has been No. 1 is again Xiaomi at 17% in Q3 2023. 3. The biggest gap between Brand No. 1 and 2 has been 14% (Xiaomi and #Vivo) in Q1 2020. 4. The smallest gap between Brand No. 1 and 2 has been 0 (Xiaomi and #Samsung) in Q2 2018 and Q3 2023 and Vivo and Xiaomi in Q1 2024 5. The highest contribution of the top 5 brands has been 91.6% in Q2 2020. 6. The lowest contribution of the top 5 brands has been 72% in Q4 2018. 7. It took Xiaomi 11 quarters to reach a double digit market share in India. 8. It is not that Xiaomi had a clean run as the No. 1 for 20 quarters as is said. Samsung shared the top slot with them in Q2 2018 and beat them in Q3 2020. 9. The brand with the highest swing in market share has been Xiaomi. 31% as the highest and 16% as lowest. 10. Vivo is the only brand except Xiaomi and Samsung that has crossed 20% market share. 11. Q2 2022 was unique in that the top 4 brands were spaced out by 1% each. Xiaomi at 19%, Samsung at 18%, Vivo at 17% and #REALME at 16%. 12. Q2 2024 was again unique that the top 3 brands were separated by a gap of just o.8%. 18.9% Xiaomi, 18.8% Vivo and 18.1% Samsung. 13. Actually Samsung has not been a clear No. 1 brand as it is assumed in 2023 in all quarters. There was a tie between Vivo and Samsung in Q3 2024, and between Vivo and Xiaomi in Q1 2024. 14. The highest share achieved by #Oppo is 11.4% in Q2 2024. 15. The highest share achieved by #Realme is 16% in Q1 2022. 16.
