He was shocked and asked, “Don’t you want to know the reason why?” My reply was, "I don't need to know the details. I hired you to get the job done and I trust you to get it done.” You choose how to get your work done. Come to the office fine. 9 to 6? Fine. Work from home. Fine. Leave early. Fine. Work from your new home while there is construction going on behind. Fine. We are all human. I don't need to know you will be late because of a doctor's appointment, or you are leaving early to attend a personal matter. It's sad how we have infantilized the workplace so much, that employees feel the need to apologize for having personal lives. I am not a clock watcher. I trust you to get your job done. Kubernetes Bin Packing ⚡ First lest understand what is bin packing. In simple terms, bin packing is a way of arranging items so that you use the least number of containers (or bins) possible. Imagine you have a bunch of items of different sizes and you need to pack them into boxes. Bin packing is about figuring out the best way to put those items into the boxes so that you use as few boxes as possible. In Kubernetes, bin packing works similarly but with resources. It means trying to use the available resources on each server or node as efficiently as possible, packing as many workloads as you can onto each node to minimize the number of nodes needed. In today blog, we will look at the following. 𝗡𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗙𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝘂𝗴𝗶𝗻: It is part of the Kubernetes scheduler framework. Its primary function is to check if a node has sufficient resources to meet a pod's resource requests. For scoring, the NodeResourcesFit plugin can be configured to use any of the following scoring strategies 1. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 (Default strategy): This strategy aims to spread out the workload evenly across nodes to prevent any single node from being overloaded. 3. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 : In this, the scheduler will pick a node that is already using more resources but still has enough available resources for the new pod. 4. 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱𝗧𝗼𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼: In this you can give different importance (weights) to different resources like CPUs and memory. For example, you might decide that CPUs are more important than memory for a particular pod. IPL: Razorpay's Second Innings 🏏 The title "IPL: Razorpay’s second innings" really intrigued me. What does a fintech platform have to do with IPL? 🤔 It turns out, user behavior during an IPL match, like ordering food or gaming, had an indirect impact on Razorpay. In 2019, they struggled with traffic bursts during IPL matches, which lasted over 10 minutes—something their engineering hadn't anticipated. After this challenging IPL season, they strategized to handle future traffic bursts better. Here are the key problems they identified and solved: Problems: 🧵 Thread Exhaustion: PHP Laravel, their backend, lacked proper DB connection pooling, blocking threads and connections when the gateway took longer. 🚦 Throttling: They weren’t throttling requests, making them vulnerable to DDoS attacks. 🏦 Banking Gateway Backpressure: Banking gateways experienced 20x their normal P99s during traffic bursts. 🚥 Smart Routing Requests: There was no way to identify the load on different banking gateway nodes to route requests to less loaded ones. 📊 Alerts & Monitoring: Their alerting mechanism was too slow, giving them no time for remediation. Solutions: 🧵 Thread Exhaustion: They used ProxySQL as a layer between the backend and MySQL, deploying it as a sidecar with each backend pod for fault tolerance. 🚦 Throttling: Implemented simpler fixed window rate limiting instead of the earlier one which was a leaky bucket algorithm implementation backed by a Redis store, also moved this service to an NGINX-based proxy server as a side car with dedicated cache and new rate-limiting configurations (e.g., requests per route per merchant). 🏦 Easing Banking Gateway Backpressure through Smart Routing: Built a machine learning-based system to route transactions smartly, considering earlier payment success/failure events. This improved success rates by 60% during bursts and 4% during normal periods. 📊 Alerts & Monitoring: Using Victoria Metrics and Grafana, they developed a real-time alerting system for business and engineering KPIs. I wanted to share some unpopular opinions about layoffs and restructuring in organisations, especially in software. After Intuit announced their round of layoffs, there has been some confusion, freshers are panic again, and I've heard these opinions from some of the best developers and leaders in the software domain which might help you too. I wish to share them so you can also have this perspective in mind. 1. Cracking interviews is different from sustaining in an organization: Freshers, especially, are more focused on cracking interviews than on sustaining their positions. When a friend shared this with me, I felt this is something many don't realize about the software industry. Often, what you are asked in an interview is different from the actual work you will be doing. Embracing a love for technology and working towards the organization's goals is more important than just cracking interviews. 2. Your pay package comes with expectations: Many of us look at the cool packages and perks companies offer and assume that life inside is a fantasy. We often forget to highlight the hard work and responsibility required. If your package is high and you are not meeting expectations, it's likely that you will be out sooner or later. So, if an organization offers you a high package, it's time to celebrate but also to look at the responsibilities and challenges you should be tackling. 3. A right leader must know where to invest: Yes, people are important, but if one department is doing well in business and another is not or is on the verge of failing, it is crucial for a leader to make tough decisions to keep the organization running smoothly. Considering these facts would be a great addition to your software career. Yes, I do agree that what Intuit did in panic is not praiseworthy. Better communication, informing employees about their performance, and giving them a chance to improve would have been a better way to handle the situation. Again i haven't been in the leadership team shoes to comment on this. Just letting you all know my thoughts on how to take this up positively and learn from this. If you’re a Software Engineer in India and want to be happy, stop scrolling. Many developers have this “dream life” in mind: 1. Join a top MNC like Google, Amazon, or Microsoft; 2. Climb the corporate ladder: network, work hard, and aim for rapid promotions; 3. Increase your total compensation (TC) from ₹10 lakh to ₹50 lakh, ₹1 crore, ₹2 crore… 4. Invest in real estate or the stock market, hoping to become a millionaire. 5. Live frugally, track every expense, and stress over your finances. The Goal is clear: achieve Financial Independence in a city like Bangalore or Mumbai, send your kids to top schools, and ensure they get into IITs or IIMs, setting them up for success. The truth? This path often leads to a life filled with stress, burnout, and mental health struggles for you and your family. But here’s the good news: there’s a much more fulfilling alternative available now. And it’s not that difficult to achieve. Here’s what you can do instead: 1. Master your software engineering skills; 2. Join a company that genuinely values its employees; 3. Aim for a salary in the ₹5 lakh to ₹50 lakh range; 4. Live in a place that’s affordable with lower living costs and taxes; 5. Work less than 30-40 hours a week; 6. Spend quality time with the people who matter to you; 7. Make time for hobbies, relaxation, and self-care; 8. Prioritize your physical and mental health. This should be a no-brainer. Take a moment to think about it.

Senior developers can stay connected to the codebase, provide productive hands-on experience, maintain updated technical skills, and remain highly productive even without coding regularly. However, over time, not writing code or delivering key features can lead to a sense of moral high ground because they are not involved in meeting strict customer deadlines. On a personal note, I get little to no time to write code, but I ensure to contribute to at least one project per quarter, just for the love of it. It is one of the few job profiles that allows individual contributors to operate at such top levels. Making the most of it. Regardless, interesting read.

To all entry level software engineers, here is a list of practical things that you MUST take care of while starting your career 🙂 👇 1. During initial 5-7 years of job, minimum 5 at any cost, don't take home loan. 2. During initial 5-7 years of job, minimum 5 at any cost, don't get married. 3. When you join a new company, you might feel like many things are wrong, it's not, you need to start adjusting to different work environment, you are just an employee, adjust according to your employer, you will enjoy soon. 4. Take negative feedbacks positively from seniors, that's what will guide to towards growth, consideering senior is not doing it on purpose, with experience, you will understand it clearly. 5. Don't be a #Java or #GoLang or #JavaScript or #Python or whatever expert bcoz you like it, be an expert of what job market demands, whether you like it or not does not matter, you will grow much faster in terms of salary and confidence in job. 6. It's easy to quit but if you persist and struggle, you will grow, nothing can stop, no AI/ML or whatever, we are humans, we created AI, we were/are/will control if we have will power to do so as individuals. 7. Don't start stock market too early, not even SIPs, you never know when you need emergency money as a newbie in job life. 8. Save some money for your own further education, again, this is for future, maybe after 5 or 10 years, but this gives you mental peace and confidence for taking risk. 9. Do enjoy on weekends, but sometime, just upskill yourself based on job makret, not your interest, be market ready always. 10. If you feel overwhelmed, ask for help from seniors, your career your initiative, nothing to be ashamed of. 11. Take personal health insurance for parents if you have the salary to do so. 12. When you go to a new city like Bangalore or something like that, stay in PGs, room rent and cooking will eat up a lot of your time/money, but avoid junk food, that can have long term negative impact. You can live with 25K in Bangalore happily and also feel like broke with 1.5L in Bangalore, monthly salary, it's about lifestyle choices. 13. Remember, aspire to work in top product based companies, but starting your journey is most important, all #FAANG #MAANG companies once up on a time started from just 1 employee, they all were start-ups once. 14. No need to be too much happy if you're the best coder in your team/project, you won't learn from anyone in that case, be humble to others and explore challenging task, over confidence can kill your career. 15. My Linkedin is the cleanest it has been since 2020. No sponsored post, no TCS to FAANG story with link , no DSA and stuff. Even if someone tries to tag me in someone's post they have already blocked me. Yesterday someone DM'ed me "Look at this brainless influencer promoting this product and what not" . I clicked on the link just out of curiosity and nothing 😂 . You can say I am now using Linkedin premium with ad-blocking enabled. And I acheived that with just 5 posts 😂 😂 . If you are tired of these posts highly recommend this instead of going over and manually blocking hundreds of influencers. Better try being in their block list. INDmoney Dear team, there is a glitch in your calculations. Nvidia stock split is effective now. The amount shown in the stock price and the profits is considering stock count after split with the stock price before split. So the value is showing 10X. What if people withdraw the money at this stage. You may loose huge sum of money. I tried raising a ticket but there is not option in app. So i am using LinkedIn to highlight the bug. Please fix this asap to save yourself.

As companies are pushing employees back to the office, the debate around Work From Office (WFO) vs. Work From Home (WFH) feels more relevant than ever. I understand the merits of working in an office—team collaboration, in-person interactions, and spontaneous brainstorming sessions—but I believe that it should always be a choice. Personally, I’ve found myself more productive when I’m working from home. I’m in an environment where I can stay close to my family, and that peace of mind has a direct impact on my work. My parents are getting older, and just knowing that I’m within reach makes a huge difference in how focused and motivated I feel. Forcing me back into an office full-time would mean sacrificing that balance, and it’s a reality that many others face as well—whether it’s family obligations, health needs, or other personal reasons. There are people out there with similar stories. Not everyone thrives in an office environment, and many of us have real-life responsibilities that make WFH more than just a perk. It’s about peace of mind, and when that’s in place, productivity flows naturally. Forcing everyone into a one-size-fits-all WFO model simply overlooks this reality. It’s not about where you work—it’s about how well you work. Instead of mandatory return-to-office policies, companies should be more flexible and allow employees to choose what works best for them.

With recent layoffs from major companies like Intuit and Zoom, many are facing uncertain times. These are publicly known layoffs, we do not have a count of silent layoffs. The bad thing is to mark them as low performers, making their next move harder. I have seen the top performer being affected with layoffs from big techs Google, Microsoft etc. These layoffs are the result of cost cutting, strategic changes, adopting the AI but giving the excuse of low performance is not professional. I don't have a one-size-fits-all solution, but I believe sharing perspectives can help. Not everyone has the resources to start their own business and startup. My advice is to make a thoughtful decision: either wait for a better opportunity (though the wait time is unpredictable) or accept the one you are getting now. Few people join as a SDE-1 and within a span of ~7 years, they promote to a very senior level(L6 equivalent to Staff Role) in a company whereas same achievement is hard to realize when you're switching companies. So, what makes these employees so special? A few points: - They joined these companies as SDE-1 - Implemented projects end to end - very pro-active in all things: reviews/discussions/coding. - highly biased for taking actions (critical skillset for growth) - were lucky enough to some extent in getting good projects - were hard working enough to find optimizations & propose as new projects in the product - filled with lots of motivation & drive: showing true ownership at the deepest level one could possibly imagine Staying in a company helps you build context over the years, which the lateral hires within few months might or might not be able to grasp. This post is just a reminder: Switching would probably make money but staying in a company with a little bit of luck can do wonders(both money & role). PS: I did 2 switches in my career and I can relate with this post.

Famous SDE, EM behavioural question, "how did you work with cross-functional teams" is not about working. It's also not about the tools you use to work together. It is actually about handling vested interests. Why? Before that, lets first understand what is a cross-functional team. These are teams made of people from different functional expertise. For example, Product Manager, Developers, QA, UX, all in one team to solve a business problem. 3-4 developers + 1-2 PM + 2 QA + 1-2 UX Although these individuals are part of this team, but their managers are not same (in most of the cases). Meaning they are still reporting to their managers of their specific functional team. This is where challenges start to show. Each of these have their vested interests. Dev :- Use the latest and shiniest tech QA :- Make the entire product release a bug PM :- Keep squeezing in more and more features UX :- Become the most frustrated user of the product Shouldn't this lead to a better product? No, because while the team is cross-functional, they are only focused on their specific functions, instead of the specific problem because of which they all came together. Cherry on top is their managers are not same. So, how do you handle this situation at work and answer it in interviews. [1] If anyone deviates from original business problem due to their "best functional knowledge", bring them back by going back to business problem. [2] Communicate like you are talking to a 5 year old. Most of the problems start because we assume communication already happened and everyone is aware of the decisions. [3] Keep communication in written, you don't want to hear later, "oh, I meant that..." [4] Give respect to get respect. Escalate about those who keep disrespecting others. [5] If people disagree, understand where they are coming from. Try giving reasoning behind your stand with data. [6] After disagreement if the final decision in not in your favor, don't take it personally. [7] And finally, talk confidently, explain logically. Projects don't fail due to technology, they fail due to people. It gets worse, when people have vested interests with different reporting. If organisations wouldn't have people problem, then many of you and I won't be having the job we have today (we wouldn't need so many people at workforce). That's why behavioural interview are not hypothetical. They extract the best and worst of you from your own stories and serve it in a platter to interviewer. Today I gave an Online Assessment of Intuit for the role of Software Engineer I. This was an internal opening and I got a referral luckily. I was able to successfully solve 3/5 questions in 1.5 hours, and maybe I would have solved 1 more question if got only a few minutes more. But the reason why I am posting this today because I got disheartened after knowing that Solutions were being sold during the time of the Assessment on various social media platforms like telegram. Yesterday my friend who also got a referral told me that someone approached him on telegram asking him whether he needed help in the OA, obviously asking him money for helping. I am a 2024 pass-out from a Tier-3 and I have been continuously practicing Leetcode, GFG, Codeforces since almost 3 years. I may not be an expert in Coding but it hurts more when people cheat on Online Assessments and the deserving people won't even get a chance for an interview of dream companies. By saying this I am not saying that I am deserving but there must be some deserving people out there whose chance to get an interview was snatched from him/her by a cheater. The problems faced by students of Tier-3 colleges are: - we don't get referrals - if somehow got a referral, our resume don't get shortlisted because of our college tier. - after all this hurdles there are cheaters all around who cheat in Online Assessments. Finishing my thoughts I would just say I am not going to give up and I will still practice everyday in a hope that I would crack a dream company someday.
