I am delighted to share the impactful work led by our team at Centre for Aviation and Space Exploration (KFUPM_IRC-ASE) at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM Saudi Arabia, presented at the prestigious 20th IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (IEEE CASE 2024), one of the flagship conferences of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society held in Bari, Italy. We published our new article in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. https://lnkd.in/gEGCctEK In this study, we elucidate the heterogeneity in individual purchasing decisions toward electric vehicles (EVs). To achieve this, a stated preference experiment among Indian consumers regarding EV adoption was conducted, utilizing a two-stage integrated choice and latent variable model. Neo-classical and lifestyle theory are employed to examine consumers' purchasing decisions. The findings indicate that consumers place more emphasis on the purchase price of EVs rather than the annual savings accrued from EV usage. Additionally, it is observed that risk-averse behavior is negatively correlated, while social influence is positively associated with the consumer's likelihood towards EVs. Consumers are categorized into three segments: “conservative,” “indifferent,” and “enthusiast,” to explain the heterogeneity in their preferences based on charging station availability, annual usage, and household income. The study reveals that consumers in regions with fewer charging stations or those with low vehicle usage are more risk-averse compared to those in regions with a higher density of charging stations or higher vehicle usage. Regarding demographics, younger consumers and those with prior car experience are more inclined to adopt EVs. This study provides valuable insights that could assist governments and policymakers in formulating strategies to facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles. In a joint effort with my M.S. supervisors, Dr. Manikandan Mathur and Dr. Bharath Govindarajan, we published the following research article in the esteemed 'American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' journal: Fale, R., Mathur, M. and Govindarajan, B., 2024. Enhanced Aerodynamic Performance of a Two-Dimensional Airfoil Using Moving Boundaries. AIAA Journal, 62(6), pp.2235-2247. https://lnkd.in/dxw3_sna The research article is summarised below: The effects of moving boundary conditions on the aerodynamic performance of a two-dimensional NACA 0012 airfoil at different angles of attack α in a uniform freestream at a Reynolds number of 10,000 are numerically studied. The moving boundary conditions are motivated by inviscid potential flow around the airfoil, which also satisfies the viscous equations of motion. In this study, the wall is moved at the slip velocity of the inviscid flow, or a fraction of it. These prescribed moving boundary conditions are shown to suppress vortex shedding, thus allowing the drag to go toward zero and the lift coefficient toward 2πα over a wide range of angles of attack ( α ≤ 20°) even in the separated flow regime. It is shown that moving boundary conditions are effective over a wide range of their strengths with respect to the overall power required (required to overcome aerodynamic drag and move the airfoil boundary). This power is shown to attain a minimum near the inviscid flow moving boundary condition, which is around 10% or less of the power required for the stationary boundary condition. Finally, the effectiveness of the moving boundary conditions is demonstrated for fully turbulent flow regimes at Re = 6 million as well. In this era of rapid advancements in aerodynamics and the ongoing pursuit of enhanced aerodynamic efficiency, I believe our research will be of significant interest to you. The satellite will operate in 761 km sun-synchronous orbit to provide high spatial and temporal monitoring of earth. DRDO's Scientists Complete Testing of 6-Qubit Superconducting Quantum Processor Scientists from Defence Research and Development Organisation — #DRDO — Young Scientists Laboratory for #Quantum Technologies (DYSL-QT), Pune and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai have completed end-to-end testing of a 6-qubit quantum processor based on superconducting circuit technology. The demonstration was carried out in front of the apex committee overseeing the DYSL-QT. This included submitting a quantum circuit from a cloud-based interface, the execution of the programme on the quantum hardware and updating the cloud interface with computed results. The project being executed at #TIFR Mumbai’s Colaba campus is a three-way collaboration between DYSL-QT, TIFR and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The DYSL-QT scientists put together the control and measurement apparatus using a combination of commercial off-the-shelf electronics and custom-programmed development boards. The qubits were designed and fabricated at #TIFR and the quantum processor architecture is based on a novel ring-resonator design invented at #TIFR. The cloud-based interface to the quantum hardware is developed by TCS. The scientists are now working on optimising various aspects of the system performance before it becomes ready for operation. Plans are underway to provide wider access to this system for education, research and eventually as a test bed for testing superconducting quantum devices for analysis.

Can Indian Space Startups do some advanced technology breakthrough? Indian Defence Startups break into Hyperspectral imaging small satellites. SmallSat is projected as a $7 B by 2028. Small and advanced multi-sensor satellites ( EO+ SAR) opens further ground for critical hyperspectral imaging in Indian space. Smallsats have the potential to radically improve and contribute to Telecommunications by providing mobile services and Internet of Battle Things (IoBT) connectivity and purpose built for specific tasks (ISR) in military and civilian space. In the coveted areas of hyperspectral imaging, SpacePixxel Technologies and GalaxEye will design and develop a 'Miniaturised satellite capable of carrying Electro-Optical, Infrared, Synthetic Aperture Radar, and Hyperspectral payloads up to 150 kg. The development is part of a contract under the ageis of Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX - DIO ) in the area of hyperspectral imaging satellites in space. GalaxEye claims: Miniature satellites will be the world's first advanced multi-sensors (EO+SAR) satellite, designed, built, and launched from India by domestic private players. A Connected Pixels Based Approach for Surface Water Layer Extraction from EOS-04 Medium Resolution ScanSAR (MRS) Data The extraction of water spread area of inland water bodies and their dynamics is crucial for assessing water security and managing water resources effectively. Satellite imagery, especially from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors, offers an efficient means to map water bodies during monsoon season in India. This study presents a region-growing algorithm for extracting water bodies from C-band SAR data acquired by the EOS-04 satellite. The methodology involves pre-processing steps such as noise removal and radiometric calibration, followed by identifying low and high (seed pixels) confidence pixels that were used for region growing. Dynamic thresholding based on local incidence angle was employed to address variations in backscatter response. The algorithm was tested in pre- and post-monsoon periods, showing promising results in classifying water bodies. This week, Dhruva Space released AstraView, a Geospatial portal comprising diverse archive and taskable world-class Space-based imagery (MS + SAR + RF + HS) from more than 200 satellites from our strategic partners. AstraView is one of India’s biggest satellite data platform and Geospatial data-enabler, helping solve issues in critical operation across the Indian Geospatial data ecosystem. Whether you’re a researcher or a public services engineer, you would know that handling a number of satellite images has always been a pain. I know this because I have done this for a decade of my professional life! And in the market, we have seen a lot of fragmentation: one company specialising in high-resolution images and another in full world coverage in medium resolution, and so on. Tasking a large number of satellites, collecting the data and then, finding out that you needed another dataset – phew – can be frustrating! More so, most of the interfaces that enable satellite data download today in the market from world class providers are quite complex. Through AstraView, we wanted to address all of these pain points. Addressing the problems at the very root, we meticulously designed and planned this ever-growing product to have data from all domains, and should be easy to handle – and, even more so, available at your fingertips, thanks to this single-marketplace approach. Today, on my one year anniversary of joining Dhruva Space, I was just talking to Sanjay Nekkanti about how the platform is just like a Shopify for satellite data. Astraview will enable researchers , Government institutions and Enterprises to build incredible AI solutions using Satellite data over Earth and it’s resources, monitoring and Surveillance. Whitworth Quick Return Mechanism: Here is a 3D printed demo model by AMAN RAJ and Yashika Mudgil developed in my TOM course during their 2nd year of B.Tech Aerospace Engineering, UPES School of Advanced Engineering (SoAE). This mechanism converts rotatory motion to reciprocating with return time of travel less than forward stroke time. Hence, it minimises total revolution time, thereby reducing machining time and cost. The relation between dislocation (line defects in materials) glide and shear stress (driving force) is known as the mobility relation. In this new study we investigate the motion of sonic, transonic, and supersonic twinning dislocations with a view to improving understanding of twinning during high strain rate deformation. The twinning-dislocation mobility relation is composed of two branches separated by a band of forbidden velocities. Our simulation results also show that twinning-dislocation motion is kink-mediated.
