Exports are a vital engine of economic growth, driving GDP, creating jobs, and enhancing global competitiveness. Recognizing this, PwC has come up with a strategic approach to bolster India’s export potential. As a nation, we’ve seen our share of merchandise and services trade in GDP rise from 15% in 1980 to 46% in 2023, with our global trade share improving from 0.4% to 1.85% over the same period. Our aspiration to achieve USD 1 trillion in merchandise exports by FY30 is ambitious but achievable with the right strategies in place. Global Capability Centers (GCCs) have evolved to strategic talent hubs co-leading core business functions such as R&D, product design and engineering, technology innovation including the reinvention of work and experiences with AI and GenAI. A recent Nasscom report shows 60% of GCCs performing work in these areas. It’s all about access to digital first talent at scale (and oh by the way, it costs less, but not the reason for doing it…all about the talent).

I'm looking forward to moderating a session to demystify the CBAM, and explore what it means for you as businesses striving to grow in a global market. The CBAM is a policy tool introduced by the EU as part of their broader climate strategy, specifically under the 'Fit for 55' package. This package is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. CBAM is designed to ensure that as the EU tightens its environmental standards, the competitiveness of its industries isn’t undermined by imports from countries with less stringent climate policies. How does it work? Essentially, CBAM will place a carbon price on imports into the EU. Imagine you’re exporting steel or cement from India to Europe. Under CBAM, you’d need to pay for the carbon emissions embedded in the production of those goods, similar to what European producers already pay under their carbon pricing system, the ETS.This ensures that all products sold in the EU are subject to the same environmental costs, levelling the playing field between domestic and imported goods. CBAM is currently in a transitional phase, which started in Oct 2023 and will last until the end of 2025. During this phase, importers are required to report the GHGs embedded in their imports, but they are not yet required to purchase carbon certificates. This period serves as a pilot, allowing businesses and authorities to prepare for the full implementation of CBAM, which is set to begin in 2026. Methods for calculating GHGs embedded in CBAM goods are stated in Annex IV to CBAM Regulation 2023/956. CBAM Implementing Regulation 2023/1773 provides some flexibility regarding the values used to calculate embedded emissions on imports during the transitional period. From 2026 onwards, only authorised CBAM declarants will be able to import CBAM goods into the EU customs territory. Such declarants will purchase CBAM certificates for the price calculated by the EU Commission each calendar week as the average of closing auction platform prices of EU ETS allowances by EU Reg No. 1031/2010. One CBAM certificate equals 1 tonne of emissions. By 31 May every year (starting in 2027 for 2026), declarants will be required to report imports of CBAM goods into the EU for the preceding year. In addition, they will be required to report the total emissions embedded in such goods, the total number of CBAM certificates to be surrendered, and submit copies of verification reports. Declarants may request a reduction in the number of CBAM certificates to be surrendered if they can document that the carbon price has already been paid during goods production in a third country. The initial focus of CBAM is on high-carbon sectors such as iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilizers, electricity, and hydrogen. The key takeaway is that while CBAM presents a compliance challenge, it also offers a clear signal and an opportunity to invest in more sustainable practices.
