Why did Byjus fail, and Indian EdTech so far fail to live up to the hype ? Enjoyed this article by Daniel Pianko & Archish Mittal - strongly agree with them that EdTech should focus on making orthodox ed (ie teacher in school classroom) work better, not "reimagining" the system so it's everyone learning at home on a device (it will fail). However, I think they miss/underplay a couple of key reasons: 1. The Indian market - if you define it as those able to use and pay for EdTech like middle class westerners - is much smaller than people think. You are looking at a market of more like 19M students than 190M (albeit growing fast). Tier 1 India is - for now - like a big European country and a much smaller market than the US or China. That's why we at English Quest have built for the (vast) middle class. 2. Byjus (and others) failed on business model as much as pedagogy. They never found product market fit that would drive sustainable CLTV:CAC. EdTech has low barriers to entry, limited network/scale effects, and low switching costs. The edtech industry is facing a challenging time, marked by waning investor interest and reduced demand for online learning in the aftermath of the pandemic. Amid this, Alakh Pandey-led edtech unicorn PhysicsWallah (PW) has bagged $210 million in a Series B funding round led by investment firm Hornbill Capital, with a sizable participation from venture capital firm Lightspeed Venture Partners.   Scaling operations:  With the latest funding round, PW’s post-money valuation has soared to $2.8 billion, making it the third-most valued edtech firm, trailing only Unacademy ($3.4 billion) and Eruditus ($3.2 billion), based on their last valuations. PW will use the funds for market consolidation, with the potential for “one large deal” in the next 12 months, according to Co-founder Prateek Maheshwari. PW, which initially focused on test-prep, has rapidly diversified its educational offerings to encompass everything, from school education to skills training. How difficult is it to create a category in the EdTech business? Extremely hard! ‘K-10 Skilling’ is the category we are creating through a highly scalable, self-learning digital platform. But what is K-10 Skilling? For ages, schools have bundled certain vital activities under the heading of ‘extra/co-curricular activities.’ In most cases these are ‘OPTIONAL’ for students to choose. This has masked the real meaning of skilling. If every educationist out there is saying that skills are more important than knowledge, then why are we not standardizing skill learning? The answer is ‘Lack of Standardised learning tools or PLATFORM’. We created this category and standardized skill learning in schools. Today, over 200,000 students engage in skill learning through Ulipsu every single day across 500+ schools. Why did we begin the Foresight Summit when there are tons of conferences and events dotting the landscape for schools in this country? With National Curriculum Framework 2023, the rapid rise of Generative AI and increasing divergence between Millennial teachers (born 1980-1995) & Gen Alpha students (born post 2010), the education landscape is rapidly evolving. Some truths remain: ✅ Most students need a caring teacher; there are very few self-directed students who can learn on their own  ✅ AI can't replace teachers.  ✅ Gradual release of responsibility from teacher-led to student-led works. Neither a 40 minute lecture, nor discovery based learning works. ✅ Multi-modal works better than single mode in getting across concepts. But learning styles is a myth. However, ⭐How to prepare for competence based exams when rote learning will not help students anymore? ⭐How to leverage technology to empower our teachers? ⭐How to equip our students to use technology responsibly to create vs. mindlessly consume technology? ⭐How to reimagine a school's timetable and annual calendar around student learning vs. syllabus completion? ⭐How can teachers and technology come together to finally achieve the holy grail of school education: personalisation - teach at the level of one student, not to an average of 40!? These are important questions that all school leaders need to deal with. And with the Foresight Summit, we aim to play a role in initiating these deliberations and catalysing this change. Not many people know the amount of focus we have on Tech at GGI. I am part of a generation in which Edtech has a bad name. I genuinely think the honest objective with which Edtech started has been lost somewhere in the rounds of #funding, exits, youtubers bashing each other game. Edtech was started to ensure the child without books, infrastructure or desk studies realizes her full potential - because of the power of internet. In a world where majority of Edtech are now investing in offline centres -(too much on the name of Edtech). We at GGI are continously building larger and purposeful technology to teach #Reimagined Management and Public Policy to those who are in the remotest corner of not just India but the globe. It's been 4 years since we are building and rebuilding #TheTrinity by GGI (link in comment). It hosts few of the top masterclasses by legendary CEOs and Chairman on our internal platform (BlackRock Asia Chairman, McKinsey & Company Global CEO, BCG Chairman etc). And I always tell our scholars to not do Netflix and chill. Replace it with Trinity and chill while at GGI. Why ? Because getting entertained is easy but getting educated is tough. I am very proud of the tech interns who have contributed to our mission to only later join Google, Bain and Amazon. Hence to bring Edtech on the main map again- We need players who are focussed on mission and not driven by IRRs or short term investor game. (nothing wrong with investors if you can stay true to your long term mission). And we at GGI are proud to be contributing to India's 🇮🇳 Management and Policy #Education story with one Good Tech at a time!
