Yesterday, we conducted a workshop on resume-writing on our SmartEES Club platform. One participant had acquired a new skill through a training institute, not a traditional college. They wanted to know whether to include this skill in their resume or not. ❓ It's amazing how many of us unconsciously believe that learning from a traditional educational institution is the only legit way, while other sources of learning are dubious! In reality, one does not need a degree or a certificate to learn and become knowledgeable. For now, let's forget that we may need them to apply to jobs & internships. 🤫 In Dec 2015, on my annual visit from the US to namma Bengaluru, I took a cab from the airport to home. The sense of coming home was really strong. So I chatted with the driver asking him to update me on all that was happening. The driver didn't have much formal education, but he was a street smart and knowledgeable man. He told me about all the corruption cases and black money that was going around. "What can we do?", I said in exasperation. Phat! came his solution... Demonetization. He didn't use the word, but what he described is exactly what happened in India one year later in Nov-Dec 2016. 👀 Demonetization was an unheard-of concept for me back then. I thought he was bluffing his way and quizzed him non-stop during the hour-long drive. Nope! He produced convincing arguments. He had really thought this through. I was very impressed with the level of his analysis. He was clearly not parrotting something he had overheard. When I shared the driver’s solution with folks I met in Bangalore on that trip, they laughed. It felt like a good joke! 😆 How did this cab driver learn so much about the Indian economy and the on-the-ground reality? He did not have a degree. He spoke barely any English, yet he was fluent in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. He had some schooling, but wasn't good at reading. Yet, he engaged me in an hour-long conversation in Kannada, presented very logical arguments, listened to my counter-arguments and responded calmly and empathetically. "Quick Learning, Strong Communication, Critical Thinking and High Emotional Intelligence"--Would he list these as strengths on his resume? 🤨 I gave him a generous tip because I enjoyed the conversation. It was indeed a learning experience to understand the context and experiences of the teachers of SCSTRTI department schools in Odisha. A few thoughts and questions that have arisen from my experiences in teacher trainings are as follows: 1. How can the state or any other autonomous body integrate various initiatives trying to achieve the same objective? 2. Are you treating all learners the same? That might be your biggest mistake. When I started out designing online courses, I believed one size could fit all. I assumed what worked for one learner would work for everyone. But, I realized I was wrong. Not every learner is the same. Many educators assume one size fits all. But, this approach can leave some learners behind. Ignoring individual learning needs leads to: 🔴 Frustration for learners. 🔴 Lower engagement levels. 🔴 Missed opportunities for growth. Each learner has unique strengths and preferences. Some thrive with visuals. Others prefer hands-on activities. What is Education? No, it is not knowing how to talk and write in "English". Most people have a misconception that a person not communicating in English is not educated and is not eligible to sit for an interview or crack an exam. Let me tell you what education really is: 1. To know how to take care of your body in education, 2. To know and accept the importance of mental health is education. 3. To have a first-aid kit and be prepared for small accidents is education. 4. To know basic rights is education. 5. To be able to understand that sometimes keeping quiet is imperative. 6. To be able to draw a line between straight-forwardness and rudeness. 7. To be able to have faith, confidence, and discipline is education. 8. To act your age is education. 9. To know your inner strength and work on it is education. 10. To understand Karma is education. 11. To not litter around and keep your neighbourhood clean is education. I can go on and on, but what I am trying to convey here is that none of the above is any way related to knowing English. English is just a language. Educational Expense in India is Soaring! Half the fees don't even make sense: → Parent Orientation Charges → Annual Charges (Beyond Tuition) → Caution Money (For Nursery and Jr KG) Education now starts at 1.5-2 Lakhs a year. Is this a one-off case? Not really. And the only rebuttal is that: You don't have to send your kids to such fancy schools. (Which is somewhat correct). However, as folks become successful, their goal becomes to share this with their kids by giving them the best opportunities. But looking at how the fees are growing, No one outside the Top 0.1% will be able to afford such high expenses so early in their career. And that seems like the harsh reality in India! I just finished a book that I know I'll cherish for my whole life: 'The Forest of Enchantments.' Oh, what a beauty it is! 🙌 This book focuses on Sita's life, her hardships, and the different types of love she experienced. However, there are two lessons that I would love to highlight: Haradhanu (The bow broken by Ram) teaching Sita about life: When Sita was alone, she used to talk to Haradhanu, and it would take her to unknown places and make her face hardships like being stuck in a cave or a burning palace. This shows how the divine prepares you for hardships! So whenever you face any challenge, you are already somewhat ready for it! Luv and Kush, learning everything in the forest without a father: Sita left no stone unturned when it came to training her children without their father. She taught them about healing herbs, self-defence, the art of the sword, and, most importantly, the value of kindness. I don't know if Ram could have done it alone the way she did. The relationship between Ram and Sita is undeniably beautiful and will be cherished forever. However, what I truly appreciate is how Chitra Divakaruni was able to shape Sita's perspective in a way that makes you cry, especially in the last 50 pages, where you feel every inch of pain she tried to portray. Explained: What is Drip Learning? Have you heard this word before, Drip Learning? Before we talk about Drip Learning let me tell you a story. In the backend of 2018, I was in my village Koshikapur. This small village is in Supaul District, Bihar and Nepal is just half an hour from this place. One of my favorite thing to do is to talk to people. I will go to the farms and talk with people and see what's happening. One of the things which I saw on the fields was watering the fields. This was done through motor pumps where excess of water was given to the field. While I understand that paddy requires a lot of water but a lot of times excess water water is given everywhere. Why does this happen? Because electricity is subsidized and almost free at a lot of places, people don't care and put a lot of water. This puts pressure on a lot of things as we spend unnecessary electricity, excessive water which mostly is not required by the fields. In those times, I had studied about Drip Irrigation where the water is given on the fields and at the roots drop by drop with spaced interval, and it was not happening in my village. But I had seen its usefulness through newspaper and internet articles. Drawing parallel with Drip Irrigation, Drip Learning is a very similar concept but not in the field of agriculture but learning and development. A lot of times, learners are forced to do courses which is huge and they have to do these courses with their work. It leads to resources wastage as the organization doesn't get the desired result. The solution to it is Drip Learning. Drip Learning is a method where small amount of knowledge is given to the learner with a spaced repetition. If the learners are given small portions of knowledge in the form of microlearning, it will be easily digestible, and hence effective. Therefore, Drip Learning can lead to effective and sustainable use of resources. #learninganddevelopment #instructionaldesigner

A Teacher is such a generic word in comparison for what we already had from our ancient texts in India. 5th Sept is  Teacher's Day in India.  lets enlighten ourselves  on what a Teacher should be.   TEACHER is a generic English term  that got a few more associated terms like  instructor, professor, mentor, trainer, coach etc.  Sanskrit has an evolutionary concept for a "teacher"  based on their unique abilities and what/how they deliver.  The 6 phases representing the evolution of a Teacher are: 1. The teacher who gives you information is called ADHYAPAK 2. The one who imparts knowledge along with Information is called UPADHYAYA 3. The one who Imparts skill is called ACHARYA 4. The one who is able to give deep insight into a subject is called PANDIT 5. The one who has a visionary view on a subject and teaches you to think in that manner is called DHRISHTA 6. The one who is able to awaken the wisdom in you, leading you from darkness to light is called GURU The teaching journey is from ADHYAPAK to GURU The student Journey is to learn under ADHYAPAK to GURU The western world directly jumped the gun and started using the term 'Guru' as in Management Guru etc. but the individuals called by that term are far from it. And yes,  You could be teaching something  that you learnt a while ago while at  the same time learning a new subject. You could be learning under a  Pandit or a Dhrishta while acting  as an Adhyapak for the new learners. And for different things,  subjects / skills in your life,  you will be in different phases of  learning and teaching combination. Find Your Role and Play it well.
