Buying gold / silver coins on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Trithiya come under low frequency - low complexity purchase category. It is a seasonal product bought generally during specific occasions. Zepto Blinkit Swiggy lapped up this opportunity and started selling this with the benefit of quick delivery. No wonder the sales picked up quite well. I wonder how much would it have impacted the sales of larger eComm players. Sales trends from swiggy is already out. The Digit IPO is not just vital for the company but also a test of the Indian startup ecosystem, and something of a report card on the past three years. After PB Fintech, Nykaa and Paytm got their listings in November 2021, Go Digit is the next major new-age tech company going for an IPO. It’s been three years, and in that gap a lot has changed. Unicorns have largely delayed their IPOs, including the likes of OYO, boAT, Pine Labs and others, besides Digit. So many entrepreneurs and public markets investors would be watching the fate of Digit now, because it will give them a hint about how other IPOs might be received. Tata-owned BigBasket was late to the quick commerce party, belatedly launching its quick commerce offering BBnow in April 2022. Even then, it wasn’t convinced about the staying power of quick commerce. In mid-2022, BigBasket CEO Hari Menon said that 80% of the business would continue to come from its slotted delivery service.    Cut to 2024, and it appears BB may have misread the tea leaves. The bullishness around quick commerce is stronger than ever before. In fact, according to one BigBasket executive and a Tata Digital executive, BigBasket has lost e-grocery market share to quick commerce players.

This week SEBI has proposed amendments to Angel Funds (a sub-category of Cat-1 AIF). TL;DR of the proposal: 1. Max investment by an Angel Fund in a company of up to INR 25Cr (currently 10Cr). 2. Min. investment in a company of INR 10L (currently 25L). 3. Replace min. angel fund corpus of INR 5Cr with a requirement that investing can start only once 5 accredited investors have been onboarded. 4. Angel fund employees & directors to invest a minimum of INR 5 Lacs in the angel fund. 5. Increase the scope of investors to HUFs, family trusts, and sole proprietorships. A lot of these seem too good to be true, but overall, they will boost capital deployment into venture capital opportunities and that is something to root for!

People often criticises Vijay Shekhar Sharma and Paytm but one thing that makes him different, various approach he has taken as a #leader. Despite having so many set back, a humble beginnings today leads to one of growth story India as Bharat have seen. More importantly I admire him, as #Paytm is not just a FinTech ecosystem, but more of an ecosystem itself. I once shared about in the past, shall post the link in comment where, how PayTM as evolved as Tech Stack for the entire Financial Segment of the Indian FinTech ecosystem. That's what we need more #startups and #ventures to follow. At the same time, we have seen how Indian Start-ups have copied the business model of #Amazon #AirBnb #Alibaba, #Uber etc , but yet when we look to the original of these compared to Indian counter part, they are heavily deploying R&D, bringing innovations and are not keeping themselves limited to the domain for what they started. All the names listed above, are more or less, an ecosystem itself today, be it tech, cloud or even Hardware tech in many case. That's what #Indian counter part need to come up with rather than just becoming #comsumer driven for one domain. Why has Zomato acquired Paytm’s movie ticketing business, Paytm Insider? At an estimated ₹300-350 crore in annual revenue, the move ticketing business would add just ~2.5% to Zomato’s top-line, to acquire which it’s expected to trump-up ₹2,048 crore. So, why would Zomato be interested in what appears to be a minuscule acquisition? The answer may lie in Zomato’s future growth trajectory. Its core food business is experiencing a slowdown, as showcased in the latest quarterly results wherein gross order value suffered a decline, which although may have been marginal, is in the opposite direction of the growth trajectory which stock market investors would want to see. While to some the fall may appear to be just a blip, to others it appears that the food delivery industry’s growth phase is coming to an end as penetration of serviceable cities nears maxing out. As a result, industry onlookers’ focus has in recent times switched towards Blinkit, Zomato’s quick-commerce arm, with many analysts/brokerage houses forecasting Blinkit to outgrow Zomato’ core food delivery business. With Zomato’s core food business generating profits and Blinkit delivering growth, their one-two punch combo should surely satiate investors’ demand for growth, right? Yes, but only for today. While Blinkit is powering Zomato’s growth at present there remains an uncertainty as to whether it will be able to continue to do so in future, because it remains to be seen whether quick-commerce will find significant traction in tier-2 and -3 cities as they max out their penetration in metro cities. As a result, Zomato is in need of a fourth engine, beyond its online food ordering, Hyperpure by Zomato, and Blinkit businesses, to carry forward its growth trajectory into the future. That fourth engine could be Zomato’s “Going-out” vertical, comprising of dining and live events. When you open Zomato’s mobile app, you by default end up on its “Delivery” tab, which is natural as you’d expect that to be the primary reason as to why a user would open the app to begin with. Next to it is the “Dining” tab for when we want to eat out and use Zomato to book a discounted table or avail a payment offer while transacting our bill. However, how often do you go one tab further and open the “Live” tab that’s the farthest to the left? In my case, I honestly can’t recall. Unsurprisingly, the revenue generated through that “Live” tab accounts for not even 10% of Zomato’s revenue. So, how could that emerge as its silver bullet? Growing its share of the events & ticketing pie could enable Zomato to increase its share of captive users’ wallets by cornering another segment of their lifestyle expenses. Zomato already has millions of users who can be further monetised via charging a convenience fee for ticketing, serving ads, etc.
