A few harsh truths of life as a (great) Product Manager in a start up: 1. You will rarely get acknowledged on a public forum in your company for the feature you ideated and took to market 2. If you are doing your job well, other functions will most probably NOT like you and try to bypass you when possible 3. You will be held accountable and maybe let go for failures/misses as resources will always be scarce 4. You are more likely to work on features rather than on outcomes 5. Work-life balance will take a hit (intermittently if not perpetually) That being said there are positives as well: 1. You will get very good exposure to all functions and levels in the organisation as you will likely be working with almost everyone in the company 2. You will get to see things at both 10000 feet level and at ground level and everything in between, very early in your career 3. You will learn how to differentiate between “long term” and “short term” very well :) 4. You will learn the art of balancing on the index finger of your left hand (metaphorically) 5. You will move fast, learn fast and hence, grow fast - both from knowledge and monetary perspective Likewise there will be pros and cons of working in a product role in bigger companies as well The key lies in choosing which pros and cons do you want to live with No place or situation is perfect - you have chosen your own angels and demons and live with them! #productmanagement #startups #choices

Your true growth as a Product Manager is least reflected in your increasing paycheck. The real win is elsewhere. For meaningful PM career growth, here is what you need to internalise : Your PM compensation growth is the lagging indicator of : The 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 you are having in your current role and impact you previously had. You might think that scope and levelling are also key inputs to compensation, but that's not the case. Here is why: Your performance will be largely judged by the impact you are having in your current role. Above-expectations impact will automatically increase your scope and comp faster than your peers and with time your levelling will also grow via promotions. Hence impact is most important input. Given the importance, here is how to think about impact as a PM : 1. Drive extreme clarity about where do problems exist and where do most impactful opportunities lie so that people understand and believe in the investment. 2. Drive clarity on what the team should focus on with right prioritization and sequencing. 3. Deliver and validate the impact via strong execution - Making progress quickly on the short/mid/long term goals repeatedly, builds your reputation as a PM. As you grow senior your focus shifts from questions like "is it right problem to solve" to questions like "are we investing in the right place, is this area, is this team, is this org the right investment?" etc. #pmcareer #productmanagement

Why are you not getting jobs? The secret lies in how hiring managers think. You're not correctly identifying your weakness. Here's what you need to know: — 𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠𝗦 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗘-𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗞 Product manager is a really high valence role. PMs drive what a design + engineering team that costs anywhere from $300K/year in India to $4.5M/year in Silicon Valley works on. The result is: - A great product manager can enhance the ROI on the investment the company has made in that team - A bad product manager can take the value generated by that team all the way to zero, and even harm other teams - making the total negative So, hiring managers and hiring committees really want to de-risk that decision. They want to find as much proof as possible in your background that you have done the job before. They also want to avoid as many negative signals as possible: - Any job gaps - Any layoffs - Any signals you weren’t on fast promotion tracks — 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗘 𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗗𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 I can tell you as a hiring manager for many years, who did I worry most about when hiring someone? What my peers thought. So when I was VP of Product at Apollo, I cared what my VP of Marketing and VP of Sales thought: Would they think this is a game-changing hire? How do they compare the qualifications of a Director I hire to one they would hire? Hiring managers and committees really care about: - Your years of experience at the seniority level (in that function) in the role - Your years of experience in that industry - The quality of the companies you worked at vis a vis the one you are at now Notice how important it is to have experience in the role and industry at name-brand companies. I find most people under-estimate how important these factors are. — 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗪𝗔𝗜𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 Every job has a bountiful number of qualified applicants. You can see it yourself online. Every single job gets 200+ applicants within 24 hours. And thousands within a week. Most hiring managers I’ve talked to have said that they always get at least 5 folks who are super qualified available. This means that each hiring team is waiting out for their unicorn candidate. They know the end of the ZIRP era has dropped a boat-load of good PMs on the market, so they’re much less likely to make a stretch hire than they would have in the past. Having any semblance of weakness is often sniffed out by the ever-lengthening PM interview processes we are seeing in this market. — So, how can you set yourself apart and get noticed by the hiring managers? Group PM - Aargh the PMs reporting to me think they are Steve Jobs. My Senior Leadership think they are Steve Jobs. And yet nothing we ship makes any impact. I am making only PPTs, fighting fires and taking the blame for everyone’s screw up. Director Of Products - I get the game now. It’s not about the how I build products. It’s about making products optically successful, managing more products and people & keeping my senior leadership happy. Senior Director Of Products - How do I take control of the new and important charters coming up and make sure X and Y don’t get it so that I have the best optics. VP of Products - When will my CPO move on to the next company so I can become CPO. CPO - Time to start applying for CEO roles in other companies. A conversation with a friend who is now a seasoned Product Leader put me in a introspective spiral around how the expectations from PMs are changing --> 1) Its now no longer just ensuring you execute on the vision and deliver/launch a quality product ( not considering Principal PMs and above here ) 2) It has become more about organisations pivoting towards more niche requirements and expecting more on Strategy / Analytics / technical know how to be in a position to actually design & build something themselves, this is now becoming more of a norm in India now ( might have been like that in other countries already) 3) the experience ( # of years) does matter but only for leadership roles otherwise it is a very hard market to find that niche role for yourself 4) What skills should a PM focus on to break these barriers and ride on this next phase of growth --> [and am sure its not just AI :) ] ? There are over ~150,000 product managers in India today, and this number is doubling annually. Many of these PMs, including me, follow PM leaders/influencers, listen to podcasts, read blogs, and immerse themselves in frameworks to upskill and create better products. If these frameworks were implemented effectively, India could produce world-class products like Instagram, Notion, and Amazon- potentially surpassing Silicon Valley's legacy. But there are a few challenges: - Frameworks and principles are great reads, but their real power lies in application. - Successful implementation requires adaptation, experimentation, and countless iterations. - Most importantly, it should be tweaked to various leadership styles and Org. structure. The path to creating a “killer product” is not just in knowing the rules- it’s in knowing when to break them.

🌟 🎯 Guesstimate Mastery: What I Learned from a Meta PM 🌟 I recently participated in a mock interview session organized by HelloPM, led by Sugat Nayak, a seasoned Product Manager at Meta. Alongside him was Kshitij Anand, an MBA candidate at IIM-B, who shared valuable insights. Together, they walked through the process of solving guesstimate questions, an essential skill for PM interviews. 👉 How to Approach Guesstimate Questions: 1️⃣ Clarifying Questions First: Before jumping in, always ask clarifying questions to understand the scope, timeframes, or data points. This ensures you’re aligned with the interviewer’s expectations. 2️⃣ Start with a Structured Framework: Break the problem into key variables and start with a high-level estimate. A structured approach helps you organize your thoughts and gives clarity to the interviewer. 3️⃣ Make Assumptions & Communicate Them Clearly: Assumptions are inevitable. Make them, but ensure transparency. For example, if you assume certain traffic patterns or user behavior, be sure to explain your reasoning. 4️⃣ Estimate with Reasonable Numbers: Use real-world numbers that make sense. When estimating user numbers, market sizes, or other figures, ground them in logic. If something doesn’t feel right, pause and reassess your approach. 5️⃣ Test Your Answer: After arriving at an estimate, check it using a different method. For example, test your market size estimate with another metric to see if it aligns. This helps verify your calculations. 6️⃣ Consider Variations and Patterns: Think about how factors like time of day, seasonality, or events can shift your numbers. For instance, weekends, holidays, or product launches might affect sales. Acknowledge these nuances in your thought process. 7️⃣ What to Do If the Topic Is Unfamiliar: If the topic is new, apply your problem-solving skills. Use analogies from areas you're familiar with and walk through the logic step by step. Your approach matters more than prior knowledge. 👉 Things to Note While Preparing: 1️⃣ Practice Regularly: The more you practice, the more comfortable you'll get. Dedicate time to work through different guesstimate problems to improve your problem-solving skills. 2️⃣ Familiarize with Common Scenarios: Many guesstimates revolve around market sizes, user numbers, or revenue estimates. Know the typical ranges for these factors across industries. 3️⃣ Sharpen Your Mental Math: Quick mental math saves time during interviews. While exact calculations aren’t expected, being able to estimate quickly and accurately is essential.
