Balancing Life in Four Quadrants: A Lesson in Leadership Last evening, I had the privilege of attending the launch of an inspiring book, The Gym of Leadership by Dr Anil Khandelwal. The event featured a remarkable panel discussion with esteemed leaders Mr. Ajay Piramal and Mr. Nitin Paranjpe (former CEO of HUL), who shared invaluable insights on leadership and life. One of the standout takeaways was Mr. Nitin Paranjpe’s framework for how we spend our time, divided into four quadrants: 1) Earn – The work we do to make a living. 2)Learn – Investing in personal growth and staying relevant by learning new skills. 3) Return – Giving back to society, whether through teaching, mentoring, or volunteering. 4) Yearn – Pursuing our passions and fulfilling lifelong aspirations, like playing a sport or exploring a hobby. Many of us focus heavily on the Earn quadrant, but finding balance across all four can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life. I’m incredibly grateful to Pooja A Arambhan for the opportunity to attend this enlightening session and reflect on ways to enrich my own life. After a remarkable journey over the last couple of years in the MSME lending segment, Maitreya Capital & Business Services (an NBFC focused on inclusion financing) has pivoted its business in a post-covid environment. Now, it is focusing on supply chain financing and livelihood financing. The business model is based on eco-system financing in T2 to T4 & rural markets. Maitreya has adopted a partnership led model which is geography agnostic. It endeavours to develop a customised financing solution as per each partner’s requirement. As a part of the execution strategy, a few pilot projects were executed over the last 6 to 8 months. While all of them have led to successful outcomes, we have shortlisted a few of the partners for scaling up the business relationship. payAgri Innovations (payAgri) happens to be such a partner. payAgri is a tech-enabled Food and Agri company providing farmgate sourcing, primary processing and market linkage solution to farmers and food processors. It is focused on solving the problems of unorganised supply chain between Farmgate to factory gate and highly competitive food market space for MSME food processors. Maitreya’s tailor-made supply chain financing solution meets the need of payAgri’s specific project requirements. Given the synergies between the two organisations, the plan is to explore a few other ideas jointly that will help in addressing two key challenges in the sector – market & financial linkages. Maitreya has incubated AgDi Solutions (AgDi) that has a technology platform for managing operations of the FPOs. While it is like an “ERP” for the FPOs with integrated accounting system, it will be equally useful for Banks, NBFCs, aggregators, traders and other agri eco-system players. QUICK VIEW ON THE #BUDGET 2024 The Union Budget was overall not very eventful with the focus in most cases on long term schemes like that for employment generation, skill development, easing norms and pushing growth of MSME’s, easing compliance and focus as usual on rural areas. The good part of the budget has been the focus on fiscal consolidation with the Fiscal Deficit maintained at 4.9% and targeted at 4.5% next year. The importance of continued reduction in fiscal deficit is not widely understood but is actually very positive long term as the government borrows less and keeps more money available for the private sector i.e. there is no crowding out and this is also good to keep interest rates low and trend lower as inflation comes down. Capital Expenditure growth was maintained at around 17% which will mean that the second half of the year will see huge investment by the government after the lull of the election period. Contrary to expectations populism was missing from the budget speech. The cut in customs duty on mobile phones, gold and silver was also a positive move and could boost jewelry demand in the festival season.

It was a pleasure to meet Ravi Subramanian an accomplished Industry leader, MD & CEO of Sriram Housing Finance, and an expert author of over 10 books himself. He was gracious enough to accept and pose with me and my book, 3F: Future Fintech Framework. Ravi was part of a panel of leaders from affordable housing finance companies. This was amongst the best panels I attended at the recent Business Standard BFSI Event in Mumbai last week, as it dwelled on the importance and challenges in the segment. I got a picture that more encouraging schemes & policies including making available affordable land parcels by Govts. , faster procedures, use of technology, faster construction, better mass transportation (connectivity) and maybe a subvention based Zero EMI model will definitely help propel the affordable housing segment to a much higher trajectory. All players including loan seekers, lending companies and builders will benefit. Then off course one aspect discussed was also on Value added solutions being offered, adding to revenues. Affordable housing, along with areas like MSME Lending, Microfinance, Agrifinance & Crop Insurance etc. are key pillars for financial inclusion and growth for larger masses of Bharat.
