PMing for a mature product with half a million+ MAU & 200+ enterprise customers, is a lot of responsibility. Any miss can impact the 6 Lakh daily rosters. The Ken has an empathetic article on the role of PMs in India. Highly recommended weekend read. However, I think the article goes beyond just empathy and romanticizes the role of a PM. For two reasons: 1. PMs must deliver measurable outcomes and healthy ROI. As must sales, finance, and operations folks. It’s foolish to assume that there is space in this hypercompetitive world for romanticizing Jobsian visions of the next iWhatever. 2. Almost all tech product companies in India are a copy of something that has worked in developed markets. The PMs job is to contextualize and optimize it for the Indian customer, regulations, and operating environment. A Product Marketer role, oversold as a Product Manager role. Two things we need to change: (1) Set realistic expectations with new hires. Don’t over-promise the role just to hire a rockstar. She’ll leave in a year’s time, and you’re back to square zero. (2) as PMs be prepared to do the hard grind in the initial years to figure out whether this is really for you. Tech Capabilities All of this while staying within tight deadlines. Hence it is becoming more and more important for the folks from design to be curious about learning the key aspects that matter for all the above landscapes. When you say your product has Product Market Fit, it means your product has achieved PMF for specific segments of users, not everyone which you consider as your potential user. PMF is always segment specific, it is never generic. So next time you want to grow your product, understand which set of customers loved your product initially and find similar customers who have similar needs.

Aspiring PMs or those just starting their careers, this one's for you. Ever wondered what the most important trait you must have is? I recently came across an insightful webinar by PM School featuring Shailesh Hegde, VP of Product and Design at Hubilo. The session was all about that crucial trait—the "Right Mindset." While skills can be learned along the way, it's the right mindset that truly paves the way. I could relate to most of the points he covered. Here are my takeaways: 1. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝗠'𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. And in a startup, every other team’s problem becomes your problem too. It’s all part of the fun! 2. 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗼𝘀. Trust me, you might find yourself practicing meditation soon! 😜 3. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿. There will be times you feel like running away, but just breathe—this is a normal part of our lives now. 😅 4. Learning from your team and working together is essential. 6. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀. Fail fast and learn fast—better than not learning at all. 7. Let data and logic guide you. 10. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀. Transparency and accountability go hand in hand. 🌟 Amidst all the excitement around Unicommerce IPO, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible journey that led to this moment. What truly amazes me is that in all the posts and articles, little mention has been made of the original founders—Ankit Pruthi, Karun Singla and Vibhu Garg—three friends from IIT Delhi who started the company from a basement office. Within first three months, they secured their first paying customer, and in just a year, Unicommerce was already the go-to solution for major e-commerce players like Jabong, Myntra, Lenskart.com, Snapdeal | AceVector Group and even international giants like Lazada (South East Asia) and Daraz (Pakistan). When the Indian e-commerce landscape shifted from an inventory-led model to a marketplace model, Unicommerce didn’t just adapt—it thrived, bringing a huge number of sellers onto its multi-channel platform in record time. This success was not just a stroke of luck; it was a testament to the founders' vision and the incredible team they built around them. Their dedication to creating an extensible, scalable product allowed for seamless customer onboarding, sometimes in just a matter of days. And of course the company was later acquired by Snapdeal. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of this phenomenal growth journey.
