New journal paper on computational analysis of composite repair with a focus on the wind turbine blade repair process with Ayush Varshney, Prof. Puneet Mahajan and Dr. Leon Mishnaevsky Jr.! This paper focusses on creating a comprehensive framework which relates the cure parameters selected during wind turbine blade repair to the residual stresses which develop during the repair process. A hybrid analytical-numerical approach is used and the extent to which viscoelasticity affects the process is investigated. The mechanical behaviour of the composites after repair is studied using experiments and a numerical model. In computational fluid dynamics (CFD), deep learning algorithms can predict flow patterns and fluid behavior in complex systems, often achieving results faster than traditional numerical methods. For example, neural networks have been shown to reduce the computational time needed for simulations by up to 90% while maintaining high accuracy levels. In materials science, deep learning models are used to uncover relationships between microstructure and material properties, enabling the discovery of new alloys and composites with tailored characteristics more efficiently than conventional trial-and-error approaches. Further applications include predictive maintenance, where machine learning techniques analyze vast amounts of sensor data from machinery to predict failures and optimize maintenance schedules studies indicate that implementing such models can lead to a 20-50% reduction in maintenance costs and downtime. Additionally, in robotics and automation, deep learning enhances perception and control systems, allowing for improved adaptability and efficiency in manufacturing environments. Yet, challenges persist, particularly in the interpretability of deep learning models and the need for high-quality data, which can limit their effective implementation. Overall, deep learning is revolutionizing mechanical engineering by providing powerful tools for innovation and efficiency, while ongoing research aims to address its challenges and expand its applicability.

Managing heat transfer is crucial in many mechanical processes, such as in heating and cooling systems, engines, and refrigerators, where efficient heat management ensures proper functioning and longevity of the systems. After testing it to work smoothly, on the 3rd loop, I had the nerve to try charging it to 1.65VDC per cell, or about 36VDC/22cell. for 8 hours Actually I was only going to try it for 1 hour but I went out and forgot. The result is that the membrane is likely to leak. I really want to take it apart and look inside. The first thing that made me feel unusual was Charges and fills up very slowly. Second, the volume shift is more abnormal than it should be. But if the pressure on both sides is the same in the pump system, it may not have much effect on the Volume shift. The method I use to test whether there is a real leak or not. That is, the pump only runs on one side and the VFD must be used at low rpm to prevent further damage from expanding on just one side of the membrane. If there really is a leak, it can be seen from the video that I have shown. Does that sound fun? Let's open it together and see what's inside. If you want to participate, try to help guess where the leak will come from: 1.membrane 2.Bipolar plate 3.Gasket seal. Lastly, it is truly incredible how much leakage occurs between cells. It can also supply power. If it's another type of battery I might have to call the fire truck. " Sometimes doing something and it's easy is boring. There will be some obstacles and life will be colorful."

A significant shortcoming of Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines is a narrow operating regime, especially with high-reactivity fuels like biodiesel. Unlike conventional diesel combustion, completely premixed HCCI engines lack control over ignition timing, leading to a narrow operating regime. Additionally, the compositional variability of biodiesels, reflected in cetane number variations based on different source feedstocks, poses another challenge. Our study, published in the International Journal of Engine Research, comprehensively investigates the interplay of biodiesel composition, cetane number, engine compression ratio, and charge dilution for extending the operating envelope of a light-duty HCCI engine. Given the impracticality of controlling multiple variables experimentally, this work focuses on the potential of machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict the operational limits of an HCCI engine using neat biodiesels derived from diverse sources. Among the ML models explored Support Vector Machine models predicted the achievable HCCI operating regime with errors below 5%. This study highlights the novelty and practicality of using ML to predict and extend the operating envelope of biodiesel-fueled HCCI engines, demonstrating their suitability for future applications.

Last Saturday, I submitted my Ph D Thesis titled " Analysis of Jet Fire Morphology and Development of an AI Model for the Prediction of Radiant Heat Flux". My research supervisor is Dr. Gireesh Kumaran Thampi, Mechanical Engineering, SoE, CUSAT. The thesis explores the morphological features of jet fires and factors influencing them such as the ambient pressure, crack shape and angle of release. I have also proposed an image segmentation model to compute view factors from complex flame morphologies such that the radiant heat flux predictions can be made using the solid flame model. A CNN regression model is developed for plotting threat zones based on the flame images. Two full length articles and one patent were published as part of this work.

Hello everyone, A little update on the ongoing work in our research group at IIT Indore: 1. Our study on acoustically generated pulsating air jet is now published in Internation Journal of Thermal Science. The study explains how to control the amplitude of pulsation at various frequencies when pulsations are induced in the steady flow using acoustic actuator. The propagation of pulsation along the centerline is shown, where the actuation frequency becomes less dominant after the potential core region. Previously, we numerically investigated the flow and heat transfer characteristics of pulsating jet impinging on a dimpled surface. Where we found that selection of pulsation frequency and nozzle-to-surface distance is driving factor in optimizing heat transfer performance. In a study led by Dr. Pawan Sharma, we investigate the interesting behavior observed in synthetic jets. Due to the resonance frequency of the acoustic actuator, we obtain same Reynolds number on either side of the resonance frequency. Thus, the Reynolds number at relatively lower and higher frequency is expected to have distinct flow characteristics. Based on the dominance of these frequencies on the heat transfer separate regions have been defined for optimum heat transfer.
