M&A and turnaround of healthcare facilities!   Took the Masterclass on 28 September.   India is the fastest growing major economy. It is the fifth largest economy and the third largest in terms of PPP. Healthcare industry is one of the biggest employers employing ~7.5 million people. Current size of the healthcare industry is $372 billion and is expected to increase to $638 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 16-17%. India still spends less than 5% of its GDP on healthcare, as against the OECD countries 8-10% and the US a whopping 20%.   Most legacy providers are consolidating aggressively and almost 30000 crores has been invested over the last 4 years with some mega deals have also been signed, powered by PE firms. Part of this investment could be used to extend delivery to Tier2/3 towns wherein the care delivery remains abysmal.   Integration of the newly acquired healthcare facilities (brownfield projects) becomes paramount for the providers/ PE firms to cerate value for their stakeholders. It entails design and execution of a prudent comprehensive business strategy.   Greenfield healthcare projects present a unique challenge to operationalize and turn profitable since all expenses are front loaded. In the absence of comprehensive strategy, turnaround is well-nigh impossible.   I’ve brought out key highlights of the same during my masterclass. How does India deliver “Care” to rural communities through Digital Health? It's truly impressive what Sequoia and Viswanathan Santhanagopalan has achieved and I have no doubt great things awaits. It's mind blowing how things have advanced - from being an "independent" installing used systems to now developing cutting edge 128-slice technology and MRIs of own design. It’s not only remarkably bold; it embodies a story of genuine dedication, strong conviction, and a deep work ethic, reflecting the determination that is so deeply rooted in Indian culture. Congratulations my friend, I wish you great success! Still, as this is just a small pice of a much bigger puzzle, no roses without thorns. Being a dedicated globalist it worries me, that it's also a sign of a political trend towards a system increasingly based on a protectionist agenda, "made in India", MAGA, and the like. It always ends with tariffs, quotas, trade barriers. That's not development, it's the opposite. If we want a true democratization of modern diagnostics we need more companies reinventing our industry combined with LESS protectionism. We need less trade barriers, we need less locked systems and we first of all need the the right to repair.

Have we achieved healthcare for all or is there still a long way to go? Let's find out the truth 👇🏽    Even though India's healthcare is growing fast, smaller cities still struggle for good care. The critical reasons for this are : 👉🏽 There are fewer specialists in tier-2 & tier-3 cities. This means people still have to travel far for special care. 👉🏽 Many smaller cities don't have technology that is needed for diagnosing diseases. 👉🏽 The government and businesses haven't invested enough in building or improving hospitals in these smaller places. 👉🏽 Many doctors prefer to work in urban areas or abroad because they have more opportunities and patients. This is how we can ensure no Indian is left behind in the pursuit of quality healthcare : ✅ Bigger hospitals can work with smaller ones in smaller cities. This can bring better care and technology to these areas. ✅ Technology companies can help by creating new ways to get healthcare & digital literacy . This can make it easier for people to access care. ✅ The government should spend more money on improving healthcare in smaller cities. This includes building new hospitals and improving the machines they have. ✅ The government should also make sure that healthcare is not too expensive for people in smaller cities. Households paying directly for healthcare services is the least favourable method of financing healthcare. Despite this, nearly half of India's population bears these expenses out of pocket. This situation presents challenges beyond mere financing. When individuals pay for services directly at the point of care, they cannot assess the quality and necessity of their treatments.
