Speaking at the 15th FICCI Global Skills Summit, Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the National Educational Technology Forum, urged industries to identify partner institutions for skill development, stating, "Each industry should identify some institutions where they will fit in, in order to provide those skill sets. Similarly, every institution should have MOUs with about five to six industries, if not more, and then continue that engagement." Prof  Sahasrabudhe also stressed the need for a competency-based approach to learning. "How can we make our education more competency-based is important," he said, highlighting the growing global trend of employers valuing skills over traditional qualifications.   He also alluded to the predominance of English-medium instruction, noting, "The most important part which is missing in our entire education system, be it in skilling or higher education, is that most of our education unfortunately still is continued in English.” To address this, he advocated for greater use of local languages and mother tongues in education, particularly to engage students from rural and remote areas. The chairman also called for a comprehensive overhaul of examination systems. "Our examination systems have to be reformed," Sahasrabudhe insisted, arguing that current methods often prioritize rote learning over critical thinking and innovation.   Mr Amit Kalyani, Chair of FICCI's HR & Skills Committee and Vice Chairman of Bharat Forge Ltd, highlighted the transformative impact of technology on the global job landscape. "By 2030, more than 85 million jobs could be displaced by automation and AI, but close to 100 million new ones may emerge," he stated, emphasizing the opportunities this shift presents for India's workforce, also underscoring the urgency of workforce reskilling.   Mr Aseem Kaushik, Country Managing Director, L'Oréal India, highlighted L'Oreal's long-standing commitment to skills development in India, detailing the company's significant investment in training infrastructure since 1997. "Today, what we have is close to 46 centres," Kaushik stated, emphasising the scale of their initiative. He also stressed two critical tenets for future skills development strategies. "Women participation is an absolute, absolute must," he asserted, emphasizing the importance of gender inclusivity in policymaking and interventions. Additionally, he highlighted the need to leverage India's digitally connected society for business development and growth. Kaushik identified a crucial gap in the current system, stating, "Connecting the skilled people to where the opportunity of employment is available. I think that part today is missing."    Mr SK Arya, Chairman, JBM Group, outlined four essential areas to accelerate the journey towards a skills-first economy: collaboration between industry and academia, leveraging digital platforms, increasing innovation and entrepreneurship, and ensuring inclusion and equity in skilling initiatives.

Sharing my article in Business Standard on the impact of proposed Digital Competition Bill on India's homegrown startup ecosystem. India's vibrant digital economy, set to attain a trillion dollar status soon, is powered by a widespread smartphone penetration, cheap data, India stack,and a dynamic and talented youthful population. Our startup ecosystem has reached third rank globally, and we must ensure that the regulatory guardrails allow and fascilitate it to grow to reach the level of the global big techs, who should not just be exploiting the vast Indian market, nipping their growth by 'killer acquisitions', and various other practices. Furthermore, the classification of 'Systemetically Significant Digital Enterprises (SSDE)' facing stringent discipline based on financial threshholds and user base criteria should take into account the growing Indian startups. Given the size of Indian market, 820 million internet users in India, one crore user base is not that huge, and will bring into this ambit a large number of upcoming tech startups within, hurting their growth, already facing several problems in their upward journey. A Critical Look at Shaping the Future of Deep Tech Innovation The journey to the Bengaluru Tech Summit, Asia’s largest tech conference, was an inspiring opportunity to witness the strengths of two very different yet complementary innovation ecosystems: India and Germany. India is rapidly becoming a global leader in #DeepTech. With strengths in #AI, #FinTech, #Blockchain, #CleanMobility, and #SpaceTech, The innovation ecosystem is driven by speed, scale, and problem-solving at a massive level. It thrives on pragmatism and accessibility, creating solutions that are cost-effective and immediately impactful. The Indian approach has shown remarkable success in addressing critical challenges like financial inclusion, healthcare access, and clean energy. On the other hand, Germany’s Deep Tech innovation excels in hardware-driven, high-precision engineering. Germany still leads in Industry 4.0, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy technologies, and autonomous mobility, underlined by its robust industrial base and rigorous research culture. This emphasis on quality and reliability has made Germany a trusted global leader in industrial and climate technologies. However, when comparing Deep Tech innovation in Germany to India, a critical reflection reveals challenges we need to address, if Germany wants to remain one of the global leader and a driving force in the field of Climate Change: 1️⃣ While Germany excels at creating highly precise and reliable technologies, the innovation pipeline can be slow. Bureaucratic hurdles, risk aversion, and a focus on perfection over speed often delay market entry. We need to embrace faster, iterative development cycles while maintaining quality standards. Experimentation and risk-taking need to be fostered to stay competitive. 2️⃣ While Germany boasts top-tier engineering talent, we already face a digital skills gap. There is a pressing need to upskill the workforce in AI, data science, and software development to keep pace with global Deep Tech trends. We need to invest more in digital education and training to bridge the gap between hardware expertise and software innovation. 3️⃣ The transition from research to market remains a bottleneck. Many promising technologies stay in the lab due to regulatory complexity, risk-averse investors, and limited access to early-stage funding for startups. It is crucial to simplify regulatory processes and create better funding mechanisms for early-stage startups, especially in Deep Tech. The Bengaluru Tech Summit was a clear reminder: Innovation thrives where diverse approaches meet.
