While bigger corporates always prefer fanciers agencies and get disappointed 😆, SMEs don't have enough budget for us to unleash creative campaigns or hire resources to fullfill our KRAs and reach those KPI Milestones. When it comes to building a brand, we leave no routes unexplored. Literally! So, when we had the opportunity to brand-dissect Baby Brand Saffron, one of the most popular and distinguished Saffron brands in India, we were brimming with excitement, complete with tools and acumen.   The brand workshop, curated by Brandshaala, our very own initiative that has organized many such workshops for a variety of brands, was nothing less than an eye-opener. It introduced us to a slew of brand truths about Saffron as a category and the Baby Brand Saffron as one of the most significant players in the market. The workshop was a roaring success. Both from the agency's and the client’s perspective. An unforgettable pitch.   At a remote, rugged place in Gujarat’s Bharuch district.   Six hours from Ahmedabad, this was the home of Gujarat Spinners Ltd., our client - a high-fashion yarn manufacturer amid dacoit lands.   The intrigue of its location led us to our campaign idea: Where is Amleta?   After an all-nighter in 1993, a bunch of us from Mudra Ahmedabad piled into two Ambassador cars at 5 am and headed for Amleta.   A hearty breakfast at the GSFC guest house in Baroda kept us going, and by 2 pm, we reached our destination.   The first sight was surreal.   Towering fortress-like walls, topped with electric fencing, surrounded the place.   Guards with machine guns manned each gate. We passed through two security layers and entered a world that felt like something out of a film.   Inside, a banyan tree shaded a small temple, where a continuous puja added an air of timelessness.   Nearby, a sign warned: Do not pick up anything from the ground.   Rottweilers, Dobermans, and German Shepherds prowled, trained to attack at the slightest misstep.   We got out, strolled, took in the atmosphere, and then I asked: “Where are the layouts?”   The art director thought I had them. I thought the servicing chap had them. He thought the planner had them. The planner thought the branch head had them.   Full panic.   We’d left the layouts in Ahmedabad.   To save ourselves, I suggested telling the client we needed to absorb the atmosphere of Amleta before cracking the campaign.   It sounded convincingly advertising-like, explaining we needed the physical experience of this unique environment to set our creative cogs whirring.   A fair plan to salvage a hopeless situation.   Then suddenly, Venky, their 26-year-old CMO, appeared and broke the news:   “We heard about the stupidity. Don’t worry. Your work is on its way.”   It turned out Shivaji, our sharp-eyed studio assistant, had spotted the blunder.   The office admin, through police wireless, arranged for a faster car - a Contessa - to chase us down with the missing layouts. By the time we finished lunch, the work reached us.   But the highlight was yet to come.   The MD of GSL arrived - a large bearded young man, quadriplegic yet commanding, in a motorized wheelchair.   Dressed in a pristine white kurta-pyjama, with a rudraksha mala and a bold tikka, he was assisted by a German nurse.   Outside, his armoured vehicle, a Mercedes van with visible guns and riot paraphernalia, waited to ferry him safely in and out of Amleta’s notorious landscape.   In that setting, surrounded by guards, guard dogs, and the hum of spinning textile machinery, we presented their IPO campaign.   The campaign resonated with the room, winning the account, even if it never ran.   That pitch became more than a campaign.   It became a tale of adventure, survival, and ingenuity—a story woven into Amleta’s legend itself.   And yes, I truly became a son of a pitch.   #advertising #pitch #adagency #marketing #creative #bitm #banginthemiddle

#BrandVoice A tale of segmentation Last week, during a casual chat with an academician friend, my thoughts struck around brand segmentation. It’s a riveting story about how the universe of consumer products has evolved. Segmentation, once a prisoner of convention and rigid rules and gender stereotypes is now transforming into a canvas of inclusivity. Most of us would possibly recall the iconic Surf Ad, when TV was a rare luxury in middle class homes. Back then, a graceful lady named Lalita Ji was the star, intelligently advocating how to choose a detergent for a sparkling clean white cloth, like her sari. Today, the brand has evolved into a lovely father-daughter story in the new Surf Excel Matic Liquid ad, re-scripted to connect with a diverse world. Let me take this thought to the spin cycle of laundry machines. Once stereotyped as a female territory, have adapted to the modern rhythm of DINKY & DEWKs, both. Major brands have sprinkled their machines with the fairy dust of smart technology, turning them into AI-driven helpers, magically sensing the fabric type and selecting the perfect wash cycle, remotely even from offices, engaging couples equally in the laundry job. Likewise, the kitchen, long considered as a woman’s place, is now being embraced by men, specially in the post COVID period, as they discover their inner chef. Several brands are creating campaigns where men wield spatulas like magic wands, conjuring up delicious meals, encouraging women to ask for a shared role in the kitchen. Beyond these traditionally female centric domains, there are categories where gender lines have already blurred. In the world of sound, brands like Bose & Boat appeals to music lovers. Mobile phone Ads showcase diverse experiences, while notebook ads highlight creativity and portability. Cola commercials, featuring stars from Aishwarya to Amir and Shahrukh to Samantha tell the interesting stories behind. This connection enables them to craft larger-than-life stories that feel authentic and deeply rooted in cultural sensibilities. In contrast, majority of Bollywood writers and directors remain confined to their world of luxury,penning scripts from starbucks or plush homes in areas like Bandra, Pali Hill, or Greater Kailash. They think in English & Write in Hindi. Their perception of “the common man” often feels disconnected, their target audience are upper middle class and Rich segment . This disconnect results in commercial films that fail to resonate with audiences, lacking the raw intensity and cultural depth that South Indian cinema has mastered. The heart of mass cinema lies in understanding the pulse of the aam junta residing in hindi heartland , a lesson Bollywood needs to relearn if it wants to recreate the magic of truly massy blockbusters.
