Software Architecture Patterns for Product Managers: PMs in the Tech space need to understand the basic architecture patterns for building robust products. The top six types are as follows : 1. Layered Architecture 2. Client-Server Architecture 3. Event-Driven Architecture 4. Microservices Architecture 5. Monolithic Architecture 6. Microkernel Architecture Let us expand on the same and understand them a bit better : 1. Layered Architecture : - This mechanism focuses on organizing the system into different layers - Each layer will have a specific task at hand and assists the above layer - Ex : In Web Apps Interface we typically have an MVC(Model-View-Controller) layer approach The changes made in one layer will not affect the other 2. Client-Server Architecture: - The system is bifurcated into two components: Client (Interface) & Server (Request processer) - The client usually sends the requests to the server where the computation happens and reverts with a response - Generally, a scalable mechanism can manage multiple clients simultaneously - Variations include : 1-Tier(Logic on Client), 2-Tier(Client speaks with database), 3-Tier (Client-Server with Business logic layer), N-Tier(scalable N layers) 3. Event-Driven Architecture : - The components communicate with each other by exchanging events asynchronously - When an event occurs anywhere in the system and is published as a message can be consumed by any subscriber (A Pub-Sub Model) - This is a loosely coupled architecture and flexible one, real-time collab works very well 4. Microservices Architecture: - Made functional parts as services that are very much independent - Every service will have its functional cause and can be developed deployed and scaled accordingly - APIs (Application Programming Interface) is the medium of communication 5. Monolithic Architecture : - Unlike Microservices, a monolith is bundled into one single entity of a large codebase - The easiest way to get started but managing it while it keeps growing is difficult - A lot of interconnected dependencies to work upon for future development works 6. Microkernel Architecture - Core functionalities reside in the kernel and the rest all work as add-ons or plugins How does one choose an architecture? It depends on a few parameters like : 1. We start looking at the common protocols for Web APIs. REST (Representational State Transfer) is an architectural style which describes a set of constraints applicable on the architecture of a distributed, Internet-scale hypermedia system. It was introduced by Roy Fielding as a part of his PHD dissertation 'Architectural Styles and the Design of Network-based Software Architectures’ in 2000.   The constraints specified by REST on RESTful APIs are:- 1) Client-Server Architecture:- This architecture consists of clients which request for a resource through a request which is served by a server. The key principle behind this constraint is the separation of concerns enabling scaling independently.   2) Stateless:- Each request from the client to the server must be stateless, meaning it can’t use any stored context. This introduces the properties of visibility, reliability and scalability. There are some trade-offs with this constraint too - mainly the need to send a lot more repetitive data over the network and the need to store state on the client side.   3) Cacheable - Cache constraints added to the response. The data within a response must be labeled cacheable or not. This can reduce server load, improve performance and minimize latency. The only trade-off is if the cached data becomes stale.   4) Uniform Interface:- This is the central distinguishing feature of REST. Basically this specifies that there should be a uniform way of interacting with the server irrespective of the device of type of the client or application. It has the following guiding principles:- a) Identification of resources - eg. API/subjects b) Manipulation of resources through representations - Client has representation of resources which enables modification of resources if they have the required permissions. c) Self descriptive messages - The messages should be self explanatory. d) Hypermedia as the Engine of the Application State (HATEOAS) - Should include the links for each response so that client can discover resources easily.   5) Layered System:- Architecture consists of multiple layers and each layer can’t see beyond the layers with which it is interacting. Intermediary servers may improve system availability by enabling load-balancing and by providing shared caches.   6) Code-On-demand:- The only optional constraint. According to this servers can also provide executable code to the client to extend functionality. eg. Javascript server-side scripts. RESTful APIs are generally lightweight, format-agnostic (can use XML, JSON etc.), independent of client and server, and built to be scaleable and flexible. Let's break down the key concepts: Imagine your app needs nectar (data) to make honey (function). The API architecture is the communication style your bees use to collect nectar from the flowers. Here are eight popular options: 𝗔𝗣𝗜 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲𝘀: • 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧 (𝗥𝗘𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿): The most popular, REST is lightweight and flexible. However, it can be more complex and slower than REST.    • 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗤𝗟: This modern approach allows requesting specific data in a single query, optimizing performance and reducing API calls.    • 𝗴𝗥𝗣𝗖: Designed for high-performance and low latency, gRPC utilizes Protobuf for data exchange, making it ideal for machine-to-machine communication.    • 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀: This architecture enables real-time, two-way communication, perfect for chat or live updates.    • 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀: These are notification mechanisms where the server pushes data to the client when specific events occur.    • 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 (𝗥𝗣𝗖): RPC allows invoking functions on a remote server as if they were local.    • 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘂𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴: This architecture uses a queue to decouple message sending and receiving, ensuring reliable message processing. You must be familiar with the below essential components to use the microservice for scalable system - Let's break and walk along with them: 🚦 𝗔𝗣𝗜 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘆 Instead of a client application calling several APIs, it calls a single API gateway. Provides routing, authentication, caching, throttling, monitoring, etc. 📜 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 Maintains information of all services. The gateway locates services through the registry using tools like Consul, Eureka, Zookeeper, etc. 🛠️ 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 A microservice performs a specific business task and can communicate to other microservice to achieve complex task. Idempotency, in its essence, reflects a larger truth in distributed systems: the necessity for repeatable, reliable outcomes in environments where failure is not just possible but expected. In Spark and other distributed systems, idempotency becomes a guiding principle for tasks like data processing, where jobs might be retried due to node failure or network issues. Designing with idempotency in mind ensures that systems maintain correctness without introducing duplication or inconsistency, crucial for maintaining data integrity and state across distributed nodes. Scalability thrives on this principle. Whether it’s handling massive parallel computations in Spark or managing state in distributed databases, idempotency prevents the chaos of compounded failures. In a world of microservices, large-scale processing, and APIs, idempotency serves as a foundational block that supports resiliency, ensuring that the system scales without compromising reliability. #LinkedIn Part 1/5 - ✨✨Frontend System Design Interview✨✨ Let's decode “R- Requirements Gathering” from RADIO Framework 👇👇 🚩 Requirement Gathering Any frontend system design round starts with requirements gathering, and generally, 2 types of requirements should be gathered as part of this stage. #️⃣ Functional Requirements - The functionality the system will provide to the end users to fulfil their use-case. for example - for an e-commerce website, displaying catalogue items, and searching through the catalogue is the functional requirement. #️⃣ Non-Functional requirements - All the requirements which are essential to make a frontend application more robust, performant, scalable, and secure are considered non-functional requirements. 💡 It is important to rather focus on remembering requirements, we should focus on the right questions to generate the functional and non-functional requirements. ☑Functional requirements ❓Question: What user will the user use the system for? or what capabilities the system will provide to the users? 💡 SSR (Server-Side Rendering) vs CSR (Client-Side Rendering) One of the common interview questions in the system design round for seasoned frontend engineers is what technique you would use between SSR and CSR for webpage rendering. Let's understand the differences between these methods. 📌 Server-Side Rendering (SSR): In SSR, the server generates the full HTML for a web page and sends it to the client's browser. This means that when a user requests a page, the server processes the request, fetches the necessary data, generates the HTML markup, and sends it back to the browser. Example: Let's say you have a blog website with SSR. When a user requests the homepage, the server retrieves the latest blog posts from a database, generates the HTML content for the homepage (including the posts), and sends this complete HTML page to the user's browser. The browser only needs to render the HTML it receives. 📌 Client-Side Rendering (CSR): In CSR, the server sends a basic HTML file along with JavaScript files to the client's browser. The browser then executes the JavaScript to dynamically render the content on the client side. This means that the server primarily sends data (usually in JSON format) to the client, and it's the client's responsibility to render this data into the final HTML structure. Example: Continuing with the blog example, in CSR, when a user requests the homepage, the server sends a basic HTML file along with JavaScript files. The JavaScript files contain code to fetch data (such as blog posts) from an API. Once the data is fetched, the JavaScript dynamically updates the DOM (Document Object Model) to display the blog posts on the page. In this case, the server's role is mainly to serve the initial HTML file and data, while the client's browser does the rendering work. In summary, SSR involves generating the full HTML on the server side and sending it to the client, while CSR involves sending minimal HTML and allowing the client's browser to handle the rendering using JavaScript. Some thoughts catched during Venkat Subramaniam dev2next organizer (first part) talk at #Devoxx : Design Patterns Revisited in Modern Java Design and design patterns and general thoughts : - Design patterns as communication tools rather than design tools - Solve a problem, not use a pattern : let the pattern emerge from your design - The more powerful a language is, the more we will use integrated features than design patterns #Kotlin (and for sure modern #Java) - Refactor before or after you add a feature, but never in the middle - Programming is 10% skill and 90% discipline - commit often and commit in small portions (merge hell is what you give and should never receive) - frequent commits make the cost of undo near zero - there are two ways to pass data to functions with impact to the order of evaluation : applicative order, normal order (see Haskell which does it extensively) - In Computer Science, we can solve almost any problem by using one more level of *indirection* : lambdas are indirection in functional programming as polymorphism are in POO About null and nullability - null is a smell, code should reveal its intentions => nullable types ... or Java Optional - On an Optional imperative programming style, do not use get(), favor orElseThrow() or orElse(defaultValue) - On an Optional functional programming style, favor ifPresent or ifPresentOrElse (available since Java 9) - Some Optional anti patterns : don't use Optional if the value will always exist, don't use Optional for fields, don't use Optional for method parameters (favor overloading) About Iterators : difference between external (imperative style) and internal (functional style) Iterators and some illustrations through Java langage features About Strategy pattern : - passing functions to functions is possible since early Java (anonymous inner classes since Java 1.1) - a strategy is not a class, rather a function - lambdas are first citizens to implement a strategy pattern - it will be composition compliant by adding a fonction (ex. predicate with filtering on a stream) as parameter to the method (don't forget method references) Factory Method pattern : - "Factory" means abstraction to create an object - "Method" refers to inheritance hierarchy where we can override a method to provide an alternative implementation - Abstract base class and derived classes that override the "factory" method - In general, interfaces are better than an abstract base class - Here come the default methods available since Java 8

REST - Uses standard HTTP methods like GET, POST, PUT, DELETE for CRUD operations. - Works well when you need simple, uniform interfaces between separate services/applications. - Caching strategies are straightforward to implement. - The downside is it may require multiple roundtrips to assemble related data from separate endpoints.
