Remember that recent uproar about the #IAF using #Uber for mobility for their personnel? This raised flags about the data security of the #IAF personnel, as it could potentially expose #sensitive data about the movements of the personnel. The internet buzzed with tweets, and comments after the news went viral.  While fingers point and opinions divide, it got us thinking shouldn’t we be more proactive about data security, especially regarding our armed forces? Why do we rely on foreign companies when we have the talent and resources to build our solutions? Our experience in #Cybersecurity has made us believe it is possible to build a solution. We support the clause of keeping #Indiandata within the borders. However, it could be a lengthy process of amending and passing a bill considering all the pushback from the corporates as India is an open economy. What to do till then? Do we let foreign companies use our data? Meanwhile, would it be possible to create a framework only for the sensitive defence and government data to remain in India and not be kept on any private/public clouds outside the country? We could put a framework in place where applications like Uber can continue to work as expected, but they fetch and keep the data on India-protected servers. The usage and accessibility of data will be completely transparent to Indian authorities. Each #API can be validated. Any data traveling out of Indian servers will be #encrypted and can be #decrypted via a centrally hosted service again under #Indianauthorities. While it doesn’t completely close all the gaps, it holds corporates accountable. If there is a #dataleak, we can trace it back to the source. This is just a starting point to get the ball rolling. We can refine it and add more specifics if we have the right team to work on it. It is the right time we take a stand on #datasecurity in India. Let's push for a safer #digitalfuture for India. Last week, most of us heard of and many of us 'not so fortunate' experienced Microsoft windows outage because of the faulty update by CrowdStrike security software. Few of us must be wondering why such seemingly tiny update caused so much of havoc and stopped booting of many windows operating systems globally. The software update which was released by CrowdStrike on that 'not so lucky' day runs into the kernel mode of the operating system. Let's understand about this kernel mode programming. Kernel programming in Windows involves writing software that runs in the Windows operating system’s kernel mode. The kernel (English meaning of the word is - the central or the most important part of something) is the core part of the OS that manages system resources, hardware communication, and ensures overall system stability and security. Kernel mode operates at the highest level of system privileges, directly interacting with hardware and core system functions. While the access to Kernel is important aspect while building software applications in general, this level of access is absolutely essential for many #cybersecurity tools in particular. These tools need to monitor or intercept system calls and low-level operations to detect and prevent threats effectively. So, kernel modules are indeed a critical area of software development, particularly while building cybersecurity solutions or products. Thus, kernel is the most important core of the OS. While it is one of the most important parts of the computer, it is equally sensitive and delicate core to be messed with. Risks and challenges in the kernel programming: 1. System stability: Kernel mode programming comes with high risks. As kernel mode code runs as a part of operating system itself, any bug or execution of invalid instruction leads to the crash of the entire system. 2. Complexity and Debugging: Kernel mode programming is complex and requires a deep understanding of operating system internals. Debugging in the kernel mode is also more challenging as compared to user mode because traditional debugging tools and techniques are less effective, and mistakes can cause the entire system to crash. 3. Security: Since kernel mode code has elevated privileges, any vulnerabilities can be exploited by malicious actors to gain control of the system. Therefore, ensuring the security of kernel mode code is paramount to prevent it from becoming an attack vector itself. Best practices to be followed: 1. Understand the environment and exact requirements. Try to avoid putting unnecessary business logic or code in the kernel mode modules. 2. Error handling and resource management: Implement robust error handling and release all acquired resources when not needed. 3. Perform extensive testing under various conditions. 4. Use tools like driver verifier, static code analysis to catch issues beforehand.
