Gujarat’s coastal regions are facing an escalating challenge—salinity ingress, where rising sea levels are pushing salt into groundwater and soil. With over 2,500 villages impacted, agriculture in these areas is under threat. Farmers, already grappling with erratic rainfall and arid conditions, are now confronted by deteriorating soil health. Tata Trusts supported the Coastal Salinity Prevention Cell (CSPC) to counter this crisis. By introducing climate-resilient farming techniques, efficient water management systems, and sustainable crop practices, the farmers are equipped to adapt to the growing salinity ingress. The Trusts are committed to empowering farmers to adopt sustainable practices that protect both the land and their livelihoods. Rural communities reliant on natural water resources have been facing a shortage that has, due to climate change, taken the shape of a looming crisis in the Northeast region of India. Climate change can cause erratic rainfall, floods, droughts, and soil erosion, negatively impacting communities that draw strength and livelihood by harnessing these resources. These issues are acutely felt by those living in hilly terrains. Agrarian communities in Nagaland have been bearing the brunt of this change with springs that need to be recharged, revived, and replenished. Tata Trusts, in partnership with the Northeast Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) and a consortium of partners, introduced a springshed management program offering to train leaders and community members on methods to manage natural sources of water, be it groundwater or springs. The Trusts firmly believe that through collective action, these adversities can be turned into triumphs, offering hope and inspiration to communities.
