When #sub-zero temperatures impact livelihoods As the #winter sets in across northern India, Leh will experience intense snowfall during December and January. In the Changthang Plateau, the Changpa tribe depends on their Changra goats for the prized #Pashmina wool that sustains their livelihoods. The region’s extreme winters, coupled with the effects of #climate #change, shifting rainfall and snowfall patterns, land-use changes, overgrazing, wildlife stress, and geopolitical tensions, are leading to increasing pasture insecurity. During the winter months #livestock face severe scarcity of grazing land, causing mortality rates to rise. This threatens not only the survival of their herds but also the #economic fabric of the Changpa tribe and the broader Pashmina wool industry. SEEDS Shalini Jain and Mallika Sarabhai were recently in Leh to understand what harsh winters there mean to people and their livelihoods. #coldwave #AnticipatoryAction #livelihood National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)INDIA National Institute of Disaster Management Manu Gupta Yezdani Rahman Arijit D. Local voices matter. Local solutions transform. As the Localisation Hub lead under Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN) we champion actions that place local communities at the heart of humanitarian responses. Over the years, we have focused on: ⭕Assisting Grassroots CSOs to become 'Disaster Ready'. ⭕Promoting the global Humanitarian Encyclopedia Project for Asia compiling Localised Terminologies to bridge communication gaps. ⭕Unlocking direct funding pathways for local CSOs and communities. ⭕Celebrating Asian Local Leaders for Disaster Resilience. ⭕Building a self-reporting platform for loss and damage in local languages. At ADRRN's Annual General Meeting, Hub's focal point Divya Gupta presented these achievements and highlighted key areas for global scaling. Together, we amplify #local #leadership to build a safer, #sustainable #future. Let’s celebrate local action for global transformation! Manu Gupta Meghna C.

Solutions to check coastal soil erosion In coastal areas, #mangrove plantations offer an innovative and effective solution to protect and #restore #soil. The dense and intricate root systems of mangroves play a vital role in stabilising the soil and preventing sediment loss. Their roots trap organic matter, enriching the soil with nutrients and improving its quality. Moreover, mangroves serve as natural buffers against the impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels and storm surges. They also support rich ecosystems, providing habitats for fish, crabs, and migratory birds. By planting mangroves in vulnerable coastal areas, communities can protect their livelihoods and restore soil health. Another impactful solution is streambank protection using vetiver grass. This versatile plant is renowned for its deep, fibrous root system, which penetrates several meters into the soil. These roots anchor the soil firmly, preventing erosion, particularly during heavy rains and floods. Vetiver grass is #drought-tolerant and #adaptable to various soil types, making it a low-maintenance and cost-effective solution. Its ability to retain water also helps maintain soil #moisture, ensuring long-term #fertility and #resilience. Implementing vetiver grass along riverbanks and slopes can significantly reduce soil loss and enhance the stability of landscapes. #NaturebasedSolutions #BuildingResilience #communitysupport #climatechange #lossandamage #earlywarningsforall #ClimateCrisis #areyouready24 #WorldSoilDay #HealthySoilHealthyLife #SoilForLife #SoilHealth #SoilConservation #SaveOurSoil #SoilforClimateAction https://lnkd.in/gPFanDdA

Leveraging technology for a resilient tomorrow At the #RHPW24 today Manu Gupta elaborated on intensifying climate impacts and increasing inequities across the world which are deepening distress among #vulnerable communities. In response to escalating natural hazards and extreme weather events, SEEDS is harnessing technology to drive scalable impact and address systemic inequities. It has developed cutting-edge platforms designed to enhance risk management and #climate #resilience. Notable initiatives include Microsoft AI for Resilient Cities and working towards a National Loss Platform. The AI for Resilient Cities initiative, a collaboration with Microsoft, leverages the ‘Sunny Lives AI model’—an AI-powered risk assessment tool that evaluates flood, heat, and earthquake impacts. The National Loss Platform uses digital technology to create disaster loss wallets at a scale, fortifying #climate #action and ensuring investments are resilient to shocks. These integrated approaches are critical in addressing the urgent need for climate resilience across the Asia Pacific. #Microsoft #RHPW24 #LocallyLed #AreYouReady24 #DRRday #EarlyWarningsForAll United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) India Climate Collaborative Gunjan Patel Kishore Kumar Thangavelu Meghna C. Workplace giving at its best! At SEEDS, we believe that collective action can make a lasting impact. Recently Ather Energy stepped up to support communities following the devastating #WayanadLandslide in Kerala. Ather Energy's team mobilised resources and their compassionate efforts and commitment have made a difference in the lives of 110 families. Initiatives like this inspire #employees to engage meaningfully, making them an integral part of #disaster response. They also strengthen the connection between the workplace and the community in their time of need, thus fostering a culture of empathy and action. This is a heartwarming example of #workplace #giving at its best. Together, we’ve shown that corporate responsibility goes beyond giving — making every contribution count towards a better tomorrow. #DisasterResponse #WorkplaceGiving #CorporateResponsibility #SEEDSImpact #HumanBeings #GoFundMe #HumanitarianAction #Peacebuilding #Humanity #joyofgiving #transformlives
At Ather Energy we believe in coming together and responding to the needs around us. Earlier this year our team members rallied in support of families affected by the landslides in #Wayanad, Kerala. By pooling contributions from both team members and the management, and with on ground support from our implementation partner SEEDS we were able to provide essential home needs for 110 families who had lost their loved ones and their homes in the landslide. #csr #workpplacegiving #disasterresponse

Bottom-up partnerships for humanitarian work At the Regional Humanitarian Partnership Week today, during the session on - New Pathways Leading to Doable Actions that Work for Us - SEEDS' Manu Gupta underscored the importance of two approaches to bottom-up partnerships in humanitarian work: A network-based approach and a community-based approach. Speaking about bottom-up partnerships that encouraged a community-centered approach to partnerships he said that SEEDS was a part of the Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN) network formed in 2002. Since then a strong voice has emerged that has influenced regional forums and eventually global forums, including influencing the international humanitarian standards. He emphasised that these have helped institutionalise people's voices and their wisdom converting them into need-based #partnerships. Today, there is a greater recognition of where the objectives were and what the defining shape of those partnerships should be. The demonstration by some of those willing partners helped in spreading the message. It's important for the #dignity and the centrality of affected population that organisations working in the #humanitarian space share risks and work together.
