It was enlivening to end the year spending a day with women farmers from across India and the ecosystem that’s rooting for them! These Mahila Kisan, coming from across the country, had so many pearls of wisdom on good farming practices and keen business insights on what gets their harvests to reap fruit in multiple ways. Thankful to PepsiCo India team, Latika and Sumit for the opportunity to speak on this critical topic. Half the workforce and more than half the work on the farm is being carried out by women. Yet from training to advisory, access to tools and resources, women farmers are not thought about. FAO says in its latest 2024 report that on farms of same size men and women face 24% productivity loss just from an inequity of opportunity to improve farming. The bias starts with having to prefix a ‘Mahila’ to Kisan to recall the presence of the woman farmers. Supporting women on farms has a strong social case yet the stronger case is the ‘business value’ women can contribute to, and take away benefits for them and their families in a sustainable way. Was great to have this chat, wonderfully moderated by Arjun Singh Kadian who brought out so many insights from all of us. #womeninagriculture #responsiblesourcing #womenseconomicempowerment Sattva Consulting Debaranjan Pujahari

Today we concluded an action packed two-day conference in #Bengaluru with over 70 suppliers, brands and senior experts on Business & Human Rights! The purpose was to understand the building blocks of #ethical and #responsiblepartnerships in #FMCGsupplychains, exchange good practices and identify opportunities to meaningfully collaborate. We also deliberated the role of Indian suppliers in paving the way for resilient and competitive #globalsupplychains in the FMCG sector. The conference entailed panel discussions, workshops and engaging sessions on key topics under #BusinessHumanRights, like #responsiblesourcing, #responsiblerecruitment and #grievanceredressalmechanisms. We thank our project partners, AIM-Progress and Quizrr, the experts who joined our panel, the brands that joined in person, and the suppliers who brought the conference alive with their energy and insights. The 3 key takeaways were: - Businesses need not do everything - but prioritise their human rights interventions - Effective communication is pivotal for collaborations and partnerships - Local contextualisation is crucial to implement global regulations like CSDDD Happy Human Rights Day! #SattvasImpact2024 | Over the last 15 years, we've had a front seat to the evolution of the #CSR and impact space — accelerated through multi-stakeholder collaboration. The Livelihoods and Education sector has seen much growth in India, with #SDG4 and the National Educational Policy 2020 aiming for accessible education up to secondary school by 2030. Our work in education has supported initiatives to improve learning outcomes and opportunities for preschool to college-level students, as well as interventions to improve working conditions and facilitate fair compensation for the labour force. Four years ago, Omidyar Network India gave us an interesting challenge to conduct an assessment of their investments in the Responsible technology landscape. The idea was to not aggregate the impact of all their investments but to understand how much the entire ecosystem has shifted and how have they contributed to it. We had a great sparring partners in Subhashish Bhadra, Varad Pande (वरद पाण्डे) and Shilpa Kumar and an amazing advisory council for the engagement comprising Ireena Vittal, Manish Sabharwal and Arvind Subramanian (ex-CEA). The effort to represent the evolution of the system in a single snapshot helped us evolve the LNEMT Framework. Subsequently, through Shilpa Kumar's support we were able to apply this to Omidyar's work in Property Inclusivity and Open Digital Ecosystems. The framework continued to be strengthened thanks to inputs from a wide range of folks including Rahul Matthan, Neelkanth Mishra , Viraj Tyagi, Kriti Mittal and Mahesh Krishnamurthy. We were also able to share the framework with a wide range of organisations including donors, non-profits that are today using this framework to map the current status of the system, evaluate shifts in the systems over time and also project their aspirations on the kind of change that they want to realise. The framework is today part of investment analysis by philanthropic funders and strategy planning exercises by non-profits. I have realised through this experience how providing an effective vocabulary to describe complex challenges is a strong lever to enable nuanced conversations on complex topics. It is good to have it documented in the public domain in a global and credible publication like Stanford Social Innovation Review. I hope this lexicon becomes integral and useful to a lot more stakeholders. Full credit to the folks at Sattva who made this happen: Bhavin P Chhaya, Abhineet Nayyar, Lekhya Reddy, Sadhana Sanjay, Arun Navaratna (N.S. Arun), Mansha Balecha and many others.
How can philanthropy more effectively measure its impact on systems change? “As funders of social impact increasingly shift toward addressing the systemic nature of problems and their root causes within complex networks of cause and effect, making long-term commitments of patient capital requires funders to learn to evaluate their impact more comprehensively. However, they face a tricky balancing act: They need to grasp the complexity and ever-shifting nature of the systems they seek to change, but they also need constant feedback loops that signal progress towards impact goals.” Philanthropic impact experts Rathish Balakrishnan, Shilpa Kumar, and Palagati Lekhya Reddy share a self-reflection exercise that maps the evolution of funder initiatives in three key areas: 1 | The System: What is the system that we're trying to change? 2 | Contributions: Did our efforts actually help bring about these changes in the system? What role did we play in making that happen? 3 | Pathways: Did we choose the right ways to push the system forward at the right times?
