  • The time of the year for trends and reports and what the future looks like.. set me thinking on the the future of media agencies. What I gather from my conversations with the industry peers is that media agencies seem to be in a ‘survival mode’ and here are my thoughts in trying to decode that. I think that despite the potential for transformative work, delivering it has become an uphill task. The ecosystem and client expectations have played a crucial role in this state - increasingly volume is prioritised overvalue and the agency is a lesser partner for clients’ true goals.. a good strategy may require a premium that brands are unwilling to pay. And that has led to the rise of boutique agencies with varied offerings chipping away the business. Additionally with the purchase department at the client moving into the process media is a mere commodity. Fees have been driven to unsustainable lows even as clients demand more sophisticated strategies and data-driven solutions. The traditional agency model is stretched to its limits with relentless competition on price that overshadows the need for bold, forward-thinking approaches. That leads to hiring freezes, poor appraisals and layoffs making it difficult to invest in and attract talent. The rise of adtech giants like Meta and Alphabet don’t help the cause either making the buying power less relevant in a digital-first world. Clients now demand outcomes not just inputs forcing agencies to blend strategy, data, and creativity. And clients are engaging with hybrids and consulting-led models despite the agency offering the same services. The ‘buzz’ on AI is another area that is fuelling the challenge for the agency. The tech giants claim to be ahead in the game and offering client’s models and betas to test.. to what effect remains to be seen! Media agencies are also launching AI solutions- a double edged sword as client’s can negotiate further on FTE reduction with increased efficiency. And will this be a value offering or a paid one for the clients? On the other hand the role of marketing is now seen by corporations as a mechanics to drive short term results across omnichannels vs long term brand building. And clients want trust, transparency and smarter remuneration linked to results. Yet many agencies are unable to deliver on this to the client’s satisfaction. The short term outlook is also making the relationships very transactional focused only on short term effects rather than sustained long term growth for the brands. Focus on the short term also means shorter pitch cycles that cost the agencies time and resources. The industry is at a crossroads. Are clients asking too much or are agencies failing to deliver on their promises?     You Agree? Are we living in the Age of Impermanence? Do you feel the the same? This sense of impermanence surrounds us, from the products we buy to the influencers we follow, content we consume and this is slowly becoming our reality or so we start believing!. Take the world of social media influencers. Individuals who were unknown just a few years ago are grabbing headlines and commanding attention. Who knew of Uorfi Javed or Orry two years ago? Today, they are on national television! Meanwhile, celebrities are being celebrated and cancelled everyday. We take to social media to call out misogyny and demand justice, yet the most misogynistic content often becomes the most popular. What are we really endorsing with our views and clicks? What was once considered unhealthy is now touted as the next health breakthrough. Foods that were staples in our grandparents' kitchens were shunned by modern experts, only to make a comeback as "superfoods." The refined oil industry once convinced us to switch from seed oils, and now we're told cold-pressed seed oils are the ultimate health solution. The same goes for exercise. One day, perfecting a yoga pose is the path to wellness; the next, we’re told it’s not enough, and strength training becomes the new must-do. But amidst these shifting fitness trends, we overlook how our daily lives have changed. We've grown more dependent on house help and gadgets to get through the day, yet these realities are rarely addressed in the fitness world….. Rings true for products and brands we consume…. Once upon a time, legacy brands stood strong, becoming part of our everyday lives for generations. Now, brands appear and disappear so quickly that many don't even register in our minds….. And what about our planet? The voices that shout the loudest about climate change are often the ones least willing to give up their comforts…Still, these individuals are celebrated as environmental champions.. And then there is AI, Its everywhere and seen as both a friend and foe - the overlying threat as depicted by Hollywood movies of AI developing a mind of its own! As I was reading –“AI is the first tech in history that can make decisions and create new ideas by itself. All previous human inventions have empowered humans.. Etc etc.. We are at crossroads. Many of us are so swept up in this whirlwind of impermanence that we rarely stop to think about what we’re absorbing. Algorithms on our phones are feeding us a constant stream of content designed to keep us engaged and reinforce our existing beliefs and habits, creating limiting echo chambers ! Our searches and social media feeds show us only what we already agree with. Oooops! We cannot continue drifting through life, allowing algorithms and fleeting trends to dictate our reality. Let’s take a step back, question what we’re consuming, and make conscious choices about the world we want to live in. The age of impermanence does not have to define us—if we act now…

    It's unbelievable how quickly this year has flown by. Next month, I'll be hitting a milestone birthday and officially becoming a 'Senior'! As put by a younger person my body is finally catching up with the age of my soul – such a lovely way to put this milestone in perspective. So, how do I feel as this journey progresses? I'm loving every moment of inching closer to the age of my soul and gaining clarity about what I truly value in life and what doesn't matter at all. Although I'm often teased about hitting old age, I know that silver hair doesn't define old age. I decided five years ago to stop coloring my hair and embrace its natural color, and while many take me as a senior before my time because of my silver hair, it's a choice I proudly made. I believe I'm worthy of love and beautiful enough to be admired. I still have an interest in learning, watching, and hearing something new. I find reasons to be happy and grateful for who I am and what I have. I am a “coddiwomple’ which means I am travelling purposefully toward an as -yet- known destination! I realize that happiness was never about my job, education, or a CXO position. It wasn't about following in others' footsteps or trying to be like them. For me, happiness has been about discovery, hope, listening to my heart, and following wherever it chooses to go. I'm kind to myself and embrace who I am and who I'm becoming. I've learned to live with myself and understand that happiness was never in the hands of others. I'm more tolerant of people and situations beyond my control, and I don't judge or try to change people. As they say, we are all souls on a journey, each traveling to our own destinations! I often wonder about the true legacy I want to leave behind, and it's not money. I want to be remembered for the impact I leave on others through my actions and the values I live by. This, I believe, is the true measure of a meaningful life. #life #lifegoals #musings
