Last week, our Karya team came together from across various locations to connect, collaborate, and work together. It was an inspiring few days, where we got to brainstorm, strategize, and delve into new, more efficient ways of advancing our mission. The energy in the room was infectious, with everyone’s ideas and insights coming together in a truly collaborative spirit. We strengthened bonds, learned from each other’s unique perspectives, and committed ourselves to building on our shared values of empathy, innovation, and transparency. To top it off, we enjoyed a beautiful sitar concert that helped us reflect and rejuvenate. Thank you to each and every Karya team member for making this gathering so impactful. We’re thrilled to share that Google.org has awarded Karya a $1 million grant to make high-paying digital work more accessible to low-income communities globally. Google.org's support will enable Karya to design an AI-enabled digital skilling pathway, that will allow our workers to complete increasingly complex digital tasks. Karya will conduct and publish market research to identify forms of valuable digital work that can be successfully completed on a smartphone, design an AI-based digital skilling curriculum, and publish a replicable framework to upskill worker communities in the age of AI. Karya had the incredible opportunity to present our work to Google CEO, Sundar Pichai. Google has been one of Karya’s most cherished partners, and through our conversation with Sundar, we got to highlight Karya’s unique focus on using AI to bring earning and learning opportunities to low-income communities across the Global South. We are deeply grateful to Sundar and the team at Google for their genuine interest and immense support towards our work, and we look forward to even more collaborations with the team at Google.

Our team at Karya had the opportunity to present our work at the NVIDIA AI Summit in Mumbai. We showcased our efforts to accelerate AI innovation across India by employing and training low-income communities throughout the country. We highlighted Karya’s work in conducting complex multilingual LLM evaluations, creating diverse multimodal datasets in 50+ Indic languages, building domain-specific datasets for RLHF, Computer Vision and beyond.

📱 NEW RAINER FELLOW 📱 Safiya Husain co-founded Karya. They get fair pay to people in India for phone-based gig work to train AI. For most of the poorest people in India, at current growth rates, it will take generations for them to reach India’s mean income level. There’s a growing number of accessible data jobs, especially for AI training, that could speed this up, but most of the jobs are very low wage. Data workers make cents per hour for datasets that are often sold for hundreds of dollars. Karya gets fair pay for data workers who capture AI training data. They recruit low-skill workers and assess their digital literacy. Workers earn and learn, with task complexity increasing as they gain experience, thanks to predictive mobile technology. More complex tasks mean higher pay. Through Karya’s digital platform, workers complete tasks remotely via mobile phones, breaking down barriers to employment. Once workers earn a life changing amount of money, they graduate, ready for new jobs with their skills and experience. Safiya Husain is the Chief Impact Officer and Co-Founder of Karya. She grew up in Central Asia and has a background in humanitarian work and research. Before Karya, she co-founded two companies in India and worked as a research consultant for International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) and the United Nations. Later, at STIR Education, she led their monitoring and evaluation with the design of some big impact research projects.
