On #ChildrensDay, we are excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership between Amazon and ICLEI South Asia! 🌍 Together, we are launching a network of 75 urban food gardens in municipal schools across #Bengaluru, #Delhi, #Hyderabad, and #Kolkata. Built on India's School Nutrition Garden Scheme, this initiative will provide 15 million nutritious meals to children in need over the next 3 years. 💚 This project will help to improve pollinator population🐝 (the decline of which is a global crisis) along with overall biodiversity in schools (productive green spaces in schools). Highlights from COP29: Integrating Multi-Level Climate Actions & NDCs with Local Climate Funds 🌍 On 13 November 2024 at the Korea Pavilion during COP29, Mr. Emani Kumar, Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability and Executive Director of ICLEI South Asia, delivered a key presentation on "Responding to the Climate Emergency through Multi-Level Climate Action and NDCs." In his talk, Mr. Kumar highlighted the importance of integrating urban components in new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) that countries are preparing and their role in driving urban mitigation and adaptation. He also presented a Five-Point Plan for next-generation NDCs and shared insights on initiatives like SURGe (Sustainable Urban Resilience for the Next Generation) and CapaCITIES, which promote low-carbon and climate-resilient city development. Mr. Emani Kumar, Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability and Executive Director of ICLEI South Asia, participated as a panelist and shared valuable insights from his work in Narayanganj, Bangladesh highlighting the challenges and solutions for cities in the Global South. The session aimed to raise awareness about the urgent need to improve the resilience of communities to extreme heat. Highlights from #COP29: BEAT THE HEAT Together - People, Places and Partnerships On 12 November 2024, at the Climate, Peace, and Transboundary Resilience Pavilion (F17) during COP29, Mr. Emani Kumar, Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability and Executive Director of ICLEI South Asia, gave a powerful intervention on the importance of People, Places, and Partnerships in tackling extreme heat. As global temperatures rise, it's critical that we act together. That’s why the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is launching its Extreme Heat Initiative—an ambitious plan to raise CHF 500 million by 2030 to help cities and communities adapt to extreme heat and save lives. The goal? To ensure heat-resilient urban communities in 100+ cities, protecting over 100 million people. This effort is all about collaboration—working with local governments, organizations, and communities to build adaptive, heat-ready cities. Highlights from COP29: The Official Launch of the Transition Element Framework (TEF) On 13 November 2024, at the Swedish Pavilion in the Blue Zone (C17), the Transition Element Framework (TEF) was officially launched. It is an innovative new approach to help cities take bold climate action. Mr. Emani Kumar, Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability and Executive Director of ICLEI South Asia, spoke on a panel highlighting the importance of empowering cities to turn their climate commitments into measurable action. A key highlight: ICLEI South America and ClimateView signed a Letter of Intent to kick off a new partnership. Starting with a feasibility study, this collaboration will provide cities with the tools and support they need to plan, execute, and track impactful climate initiatives—driving real, measurable progress towards their climate goals.
