  • Last week, we had an amazing session with Stephen Old moderated by Sudhakar Gorti where we dug deep into how unit economics can completely change the way we manage cloud costs. Stephen’s expertise and real-world examples gave us so much to think about. Thank you, Stephen, for an insightful session! 🙌 Here are some highlights from the session: 1️⃣ Why Visibility Isn’t Enough Visibility is important, but Stephen showed us why it’s just the starting point. To truly manage cloud costs, you need to connect them to business outcomes—that’s where the real value lies. 2️⃣ Unit Economics in Action Breaking costs down into smaller, meaningful units—like per user or per transaction—can uncover hidden inefficiencies. Stephen shared how businesses use this to make smarter, more focused decisions. 3️⃣ Real-World Stories From the gaming industry to hospitality, Stephen shared real examples of how companies are applying unit economics to optimize their infrastructure while maximizing value. 4️⃣ AI’s Role in Cost Management AI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s making cost control faster and easier. Stephen explained how AI can identify patterns and correlations, helping teams enforce budgets without spending hours on manual analysis. 5️⃣ Practical Governance Strategies It’s not just about the tools—it’s about the processes and culture. Stephen gave practical tips for fostering collaboration, building accountability, and creating governance structures that drive real, ongoing results. Missed the webinar? • #CloudConcepts: Amortized Costs Ever wondered how cloud bills make upfront payments easier to understand? That’s where Amortized Costs step in. Instead of showing a lump sum for Reserved Instances or other prepaid resources, costs are spread evenly across the usage period. Imagine a company that buys a one-year Reserved Instance on AWS for $1,200 upfront. Instead of showing this $1,200 as a single expense at the time of purchase, the amortized cost will break it down evenly across each hour of the instance's usage. So, instead of paying $1,200 all at once, the cost appears as $0.14 per hour ($1,200 divided by 8,760 hours in a year) on the cloud bill. This gives you: ✅ A clearer picture of resource expenses over time. ✅ Simplified budget tracking. ✅ Better insights into actual usage.
