The fast furniture industry has long been the elephant in the room, contributing to rampant deforestation, excessive waste, and the degradation of our precious ecosystems. Simultaneously, the food and packaging industry has flooded our planet with plastic waste, choking our oceans and landscapes. But here’s where the disruption begins: ‘Elephant in the Room’ confronts these issues head-on, demanding attention, action, and change. This project is more than just furniture; it’s a manifesto for a brighter, more sustainable future. Crafted from recycled plastic waste, the design of the console itself is an ode to nature’s magnificence. An abstraction of the mighty elephant, it stands as a tribute to the wild creatures threatened by habitat destruction. Elephant in the Room’s design embodies a paradigm shift in materiality, product lifecycle, and environmental responsibility. Through recycled plastic boards, we combat single-use, multi-layer plastics and furniture waste, alleviating the burden on our ecosystems and landfills. Beyond functionality, it’s a beacon for normalising recycled materials, fostering broader acceptance through thoughtful design. The material we adopted is born from high-temperature compression, free from resins, rendering it waterproof, termite-proof, fire-resistant, and both recycled and recyclable. Yes ! we proudly consider ourselves a global collaborative platform, and we’re immensely grateful for our incredible team of collaborators! Meet Ronaldiaz Hartantyo and @robbizidna, Co Founders MYCL | Mycotech Lab sharing some updates on our MycoBlox. MYCL | Mycotech Lab has long been an inspiration for us, from their innovative Mylea leather to the pioneering Mycotree project in collaboration with Future Cities Lab and Philippe Block (Block Research Group) , we encountered during our master’s studies. Now, we’re thrilled to be working alongside them, creating a unique segment for our MycoMuseum that will be showcased at the Conscious Collective event by Godrej Design Lab this December, in Mumbai, India. ➕we have two more exciting collaborations in the works with our talented partners from Indonesia. This journey, built over just a handful of calls throughout the year, shows how a shared vision can make execution seamless. There’s much more to come as these projects evolve 🍄 Design Team : Bhakti V Loonawat Suyash Sawant Production Team : Rizqi Paradila Muhammad Yusuf Nurhadi #mycelium #myceliumdesign #mycotech #anomalia #fungiarchitecture #designforchange #sustainabledesign #materialinnovation

Four years ago, we started growing mycelium in cupcake trays, knowing that scaling up and consistent commitment would be the real challenge—especially while building a design and research practice from the ground up. We were inspired by the groundbreaking work of Philip Ross projects by MycoWorks , advancements by Ecovative - the mycelium technology company , and our initial mentorship with Mycomaker And this list has a lot more studios, practices and professors we really look upto 🍄🍄🍄🍄 We knew that material innovation had to be a core part of our studio. Partnering with MYCL | Mycotech Lab and meeting the founder @aditya of Roha biotech brought this vision to life, giving us the access and alignment we needed. We’re still in the process of mapping our journey, but we’re proud to say we’ve tried taking our samples from those humble cupcake trays into something real. MycoBlox are light-weight, load-bearing, stackable blocks made from mycelium, the roots of mushrooms. The blocks are designed to form a freestanding wall and column system. The subtracted volume, shaped like a cross-vault, promotes mycelium growth and allows for effective load transfer and introduces porosity into the wall system. The staggered interlocking geometry further optimizes strength. Team : Roha biotech Suyash Sawant Bhakti V Loonawat Image copyrights : Roha biotech & ANOMALIA

“When we started out as Anomalia, our aspiration was to be an anomaly in the field of architecture and design.” Working towards creating a sustainable mycelium-based building solution, Bhakti V Loonawat and Suyash Sawant, Founders, Anomalia, and Godrej Design Lab Fellows 2024, believe in challenging common notions in the architecture field today. Over the last few months, they have been working with research partners, students and more, to understand not just the potential of mycelium as a material, but also, it’s feasibility as an alternative building material. Their journey has been a series of researching, designing, prototyping, testing to find the right balance between sustainability and efficiency. As a citizen of the world you can either be a part of the problem or the solution. Sustainability should be a non negotiable criteria when it comes to building the future and it is something that ANOMALIA is set out to achieve. Here's to a design practice that is challenging systems, innovating & inspiring. Do follow their journey so far and hope it provokes a thought in each of you when it comes to consumption as a consumer and the impact it has on our planet. Super proud and kudos to the founders!! Suyash Sawant Bhakti V Loonawat
“Historically, we’ve been building and constructing without thinking about the impact it has on our planet,” says Bhakti V Loonawat, Co-Founder of Anomalia and Godrej Design Lab Fellow 2024. With the onset of climate change and the construction industry contributing to 20% of all air pollution, the need for sustainable solutions is now more than ever. Godrej Design Lab Fellows, Bhakti and Suyash, have been closely working with mycelium, an alternative to concrete, that has the potential to transform our built spaces and lead the conversation around sustainability and conscious living. To know more about Bhakti, Suyash and their journey of working with alternative materials stay tuned to our page! #GodrejDesignLab #GDLFellowship #Fellows2024
