🔔 Aapti’s Report on Landscaping Infrastructures for the Digital Ecosystem is out! The prevailing ways of thinking about the technologies and the strategies on governing their impact inadequately account for the full ambit of harms and opportunities. We argue that the “infrastructure” framing can more comprehensively account for the critical role that digital technologies have come to perform for societal functions, and enable higher State responsibility in the regulation of these systems with improved structures on claim-making for the public. 👀 Read our report: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gXdE8Ssu 📜 Read the summary essay published with the Tech Policy Press 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g8SxFyiV Govind Shivkumar Omidyar Network Avani A. Aapti Institute was represented by the wonderful Aditi Shah on this panel, where she delved into the critical role that trust plays in integrating women’s opportunities with their existing digital relationships. Thank you to Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST) for putting together such a great panel, and congratulations on this session of Shram aur Hum!
After kickstarting the last of the Shram aur Hum Series 2024 with the launch of our much-awaited reports, we brought back the focus on the theme of the day ‘Gender and Digitalization of Work’ and began an exciting session on "Enabling Girls’ and Women’s Access and Inclusion to Digital Opportunities." Chaired by Megha Jain from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the session featured thought-provoking insights from Anweshaa Ghosh and Shipra . (ISST), Aditi Shah (Aapti Institute), and Antara Rai Chowdhury (Indian Institute for Human Settlements). Together, the speakers brought in different perspectives on access, use and control of technology, specially smartphones amongst women and youth. Stay tuned as we bring you more updates from #ShramAurHum2024! #DigitalizationOfWork #GenderAndDigitalization #GenderAndWork #ShrumAurHum

Over the last year, we have had the privilege to engage in research with the Rohingya community to uncover refugee interactions with digital infrastructure during their journey to Bangladesh and within the camps where they currently reside. For vulnerable populations like the Rohingya, it becomes crucial to enquire and raise awareness about the types of data collection they are subject to, and the implications of this within a stakeholder landscape where there are state, multilateral, humanitarian and civil society actors. When we think about digital infrastructure, refugee and crisis settings are some of the most vulnerable sites of inquiry, as the design and implementation of digital infrastructure can potentially exacerbate the harms they face. This study draws from desk research, field exploration, expert interviews, and on-ground focus group discussions with the Rohingya population to situate their lived experiences. It also provides insights and recommendations to stakeholders involved in technology design and implementation within the camp settings in Cox's Bazar. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g-Kw-zDh We would like to thank Robert Bosch Stiftung and UNDP Bangladesh for supporting our inquiry! We have been exploring data workers’ wellbeing and governance with Karya, and our team recently completed their fieldwork in Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district. The team conducted interviews and group discussions at the Sant Snighaji Institute of Science and Management (SSISM), interacting with the college students who had taken up data work with Karya. The coming weeks will be dedicated to analysing our observations and crystalizing them into the Code of Conduct (CoC) for offering pathways to ensure data workers’ wellbeing. Ritvik G.
