By the end of March 2025, all CTLs must have achieved a UK Cyber Security Council Security Testing Title at the ‘Principal’ level or higher. Funding is available to cover the cost of CTLs obtaining their professional title if an application is started before 30th September 2024, just two weeks away. The Cyber Scheme are the only Licensed Body to offer two alternative routes towards your professional registration; interview or employer testimonial. This supports our testing community by offering a choice of application process which suits individuals and their preferred career pathway. Leaving the military soon? Let me tell you a story.... I left the Army in 2007, after using my ELCAS funds for a resettlement course in Microsoft Server 2003 MCSE. I was all set to get the qualification and set to work in the IT industry. That didn't happen. I soon learned that there was a bigger demand for mentoring, training and assessing IT skills in the FE sector. Using my newly acquired Microsoft certifications, my military experience of network administration and by enrolling on an assessor and verifier package (formerly the A1/V1 combo) I got my first civilian role as a Programme Facilitator for the Level 3 IT Systems and Principles apprenticeships. Great times. Guess what? Ex-mil are exceptionally well-suited for the role of assessors. 1. Diverse Skill Set Service leavers bring a wealth of skills acquired through rigorous training and diverse roles within the military. From technical expertise to leadership and problem-solving abilities, their skill set is both broad and deep, making them versatile assessors. 2. Discipline and Reliability The military instils a strong sense of discipline and reliability. Service leavers are accustomed to high standards and strict protocols, ensuring that they approach their assessor roles with the same level of commitment and precision. 3. Leadership and Mentoring Experience Many service leavers have extensive experience in leadership and mentoring roles. They are adept at guiding and supporting others, making them excellent at providing constructive feedback and fostering a positive learning environment. 4. Adaptability and Resilience Military personnel are trained to adapt to rapidly changing situations and to remain resilient under pressure. These qualities are invaluable in vocational training, where assessors must handle a variety of challenges and support learners through their educational journeys. 5. Commitment to Continuous Improvement The armed forces emphasize continuous improvement and lifelong learning. Service leavers carry this mindset into their civilian careers, constantly seeking ways to enhance their own skills and those of the learners they assess. 6. Ethical Standards and Integrity Integrity and ethical behaviour are cornerstones of military service. Service leavers bring these values into their roles as assessors, ensuring fair and unbiased evaluations of learners’ competencies. So, in conclusion Armed forces service leavers possess a unique combination of skills, experience, and values that make them ideally suited for roles as vocational assessors. Their ability to lead, mentor, and adapt, coupled with their commitment to excellence, ensures that they can effectively support and evaluate learners, helping them achieve their full potential.
