Which is exactly why the decisions around what to change and more importantly why you want it change it is rooted in the NON-technical side. Without a code linked specification these decisions will gradually move away from the non-technical stakeholders and towards the technical side who can only rely on the assumption of alignment.

Why would you hire software engineers in Ukraine today? When the large-scale war started in 2022, I was worried that most tech companies would close their offices and let go their engineers in Ukraine. While a lot did this, the majority keep their engineers. I am very proud of working at ThredUp as we keep our relationship with our team in Ukraine too. Last two years due to the war and due to the cooling down of the tech specialists market, there are a lot of top-notch engineers available for hire in a matter of days with the costs 20% down in Ukraine. It was still to my surprise that this year I started to receive requests from my network to connect with service providers/agencies or directly with engineers in Ukraine. I received none in 2022-23. I have been running my software development agency for about 4 years before joining ThredUp full-time in 2018. It was easier to find clients than to hire great engineers. During that time my network grew to hundreds if not thousands of entrepreneurs in different geographies but mostly EU (Germany) and USA (Bay Area). Also I built a deep understanding of software engineering outsourcing/outstaffing markets in Eastern Europe. So this year I have already connected 4 founders to hire engineers in Ukraine and received another ask for referrals last week. All 5 are from the USA. One is in healthcare and hired a small dedicated team of engineers - I think it is 5 engineers today.  Another contracted 2 cloud engineers for some migration project work. Largest company hired almost 20 engineers for web application development. The recent request was for mobile native development. One founder did not move forward to the best of my knowledge. Those 3 who hired had been happy to pay $50-$70 hourly rates on average for the Bay Area level engineers. I remember there were publications that Ukrainian tech talent is the secret weapon of Silicon Valley startups. It seems this could be becoming true again, or my network is too biased as those entrepreneurs worked with such talent before. Hopefully it is the former. I am happy to share what I know about the Ukrainian market of tech talent to those who would like to bet on engineers from Ukraine and spend their $$$ there! Even if it is not a permanent but project-based contractual work, the current talent/cost ratio is probably the best in the World at the moment.

A few major strategies to improve it: ✅ Rethink the CI/CD Experience for Developers - set up metrics such as how much every step within the build, test and deploy process takes. ✅ Avoid High Cognitive Load Tasks - pick CI/CD tools that use a well-known language ✅ Keep the Flow State Intact - pick a CI/CD tool that provides a simplified deployment workflow for developers ✅ Instant Feedback Loops - developers should have complete visibility over the entire process and fix errors by themselves #DevEx #DevOps #CICD

Serverless applications offer the power of end-to-end managed components. Good article on separation of concerns between business logic and topology which is essential for building clean and asynchronous serverless applications. In software engineering, we strive for all the non-functional requirements (the "ilities" of software) to be of very high quality, all the time, no matter the runtime placement or application architecture of software. However, in practice, as seen in normal COTS software....software quality for non-functional requirements is generally proportional to the number of simultaneous users/connections/parallel executions. Edge compute workloads suffer as a result. You see this in practice with IT Crowd's famous quote: "Have you turned it off and on again?"

Today I received a call from a technology market research company, asking about the main challenges and benefits of diverse and remote work (in the US and abroad). These are the main points I shared: As companies continue to request engineering teams to come back to the office in the post-COVID era, the time seems right to remind us of the benefits and complexities of managing teams spread across multiple locations. While this can present unique challenges, I've witnessed the substantial benefits that come with fostering a global engineering organization. A primary challenge lies in effective communication. When teams are not co-located, establishing proper channels for team communication, problem-solving, cross-pollination, and decision-making, is crucial. Video conferencing, messaging platforms, project management tools can help bridge the geographic divide, but to be truly effective they require deliberate and intentional implementation and adoption by the team. Sometimes, when engineers are physically separated, it can take a bit longer to cultivate a shared sense of purpose and foster the necessary camaraderie to maintain synergies. Regular team-building exercises, virtual social events, and well-articulated team values and goals can help mitigate this challenge. Perhaps the most complex aspect is navigating the nuances of diverse local contexts and cultures. Differences in time-zones, and cultural norms can introduce complexities that require careful management. But, empowering local leaders, promoting cross-cultural understanding and flexibility, and identifying common elements to serve as cornerstone for team relationships can help bridge the gaps. At the same time, the benefits of a geographically distributed engineering team can be substantial. By tapping into diverse talent pools, organizations can access a wider range of skills, experiences, and perspectives. This leads to more diverse and innovative solutions, and a better reflection of the overall organization's customer base. A distributed model can offer increased operational flexibility and business continuity. When one location faces disruptions, the other can often step in to maintain service levels. In some areas "following the Sun" is needed to offer extended engineering and support hours that would be difficult otherwise. This diversification can be a strategic advantage in an increasingly volatile and unpredictable business environment. The key is to approach the management of a global engineering organization with intentionality, adaptability, and a focus on fostering a cohesive, well-balanced and high-performing team. By effectively navigating these complexities and unlocking the potential of geographic distribution, companies can drive sustainable growth and innovation for their organizations. Do you agree?

Recently, I introduced Ava, a custom GPT to help Engineering Managers with planning, strategy, hiring, etc. I ran an experiment with Ava to role-play an interview. 💬 Ava took on the role of an interviewer and an EM candidate. It generated questions, answered them, and graded the responses. It was like running a real interview, but with a AI doing most of the heavy lifting!
