Over the past decade, I have reviewed over 1,000 cv's in search for the best team members to join our team. I see a lot of people in Israel in need of jobs these days so sharing some tips from my experience as a manager and Organizational Psychologist that I hope can be helpful. If you have any questions or additional insights, please feel free to comment below or pm me. I divided the job-seeking journey into 4 stages: 1. Self-reflection 2. CV building 3. Networking 4. “Dating” your future boss In this post I will cover some pointers for the first 3 stages. Next post will cover pointers for the last stage. *Self-reflection* 1. Self-reflection and understanding what you are good at and what you are passionate about. 2. Who are you - Need to be able to answer this in 2-3 lines at the top of the CV. Are you a manager and looking to be in a leadership role or more of a hands-on executive? Is your focus marketing/sales/coding/project management? Pro tip: Ask your friends to be honest with you and share the value they see you bring. It will crystalize your own view as well. *CV and LinkedIn profile* 1. CV building - how does your future boss know you are great at what you do? What success and impact did you have that you can articulate with numbers? 2. The design is great. But the most important is the content. Make sure clear description in the header what you do and keep it short, with bullet points and a 1-pager. Make sure no mistakes. If there is even 1 typo, it is a no-go. 3. Passion talks. Years ago I hired a young man with very little experience because he came with great passion and told me how he taught himself code at age 11. See how you can find that story that highlights your greatness. *Networking* 1. Networking and asking friends for an intro or to put in a good word. Identify 10 people you will have coffee with to brainstorm your career. Some will give you great advice. Others will give you a good lead. 2. Don't only think about networking with those who can give you the job today but rather with those who know people that can help you. 3. The best way to build trust is to show your work in action. I once hired someone because he reached out and explained to me in a loom video why one of my client websites stinked and how that can be fixed. He didn't tell me what he does but showed me. What tips have you found as a manager that you would give future employees?

Conferences are the perfect blend of intellectual stimulation and meeting new friends, and it was so much so this week at PyData Tel Aviv!!! (Proof of a fun moment in the video) As with all good conferences, it's worth a summary post. This year's PyData Tel Aviv was intimate, with many planned breaks which allowed a 4th session - "The hallway session". Many talks enlightened my day: professional, personal, and all the in-between. The atmosphere was light and real connections could be made. Kudos to the organizers for that!!! Miki Tebeka, Iddo Berger, Tali Fulman, Dean Langsam 🍁🌕, Hila Weisman-Zohar On the professional side, all the sessions I participated in were absolutely great. Let's dive in. I started the day listening to Ortal Ashkenazi talking about the journey of NLP. She explained the different models throughout the years and how each of them improved significantly from what existed before. You will be happy to know that Ortal has joined our team for the next #RAG hands-on workshop by WiDS Israel Community, hosted at Earnix. Ortal is looking for her next professional home and would love to be approached about great offers! Then, Mor Hananovitz 🎗 from ParaZero Drone Safety Systems showed off her amazing "lazy engineer" approach to automate as much as possible the EDA process. She analyzed quickly a new dataset, going from not understanding it at all, to generating business-level key points to be taken. Switching to the red track, Michael Levinger from Melio addressed the challenges of problematic prompts and some great real-life "amusing" stories were shown. For example, highly costly chatbots can end their life very quickly after airing, causing real financial and brand damage to their companies. Michael showed some ways to overcome this. After lunch, Shuki Cohen from AI21 Labs and Yoel Zeldes from Google DeepMind took a literal shot (drinking!) and did some great #Python live-coding to implement a form of #RAG: scraping the internet for a baseline dataset, injecting it as part of a prompt to ChatGPT, hoping to get better results than without the data. Follow their #Youtube channel One Shot Learning for great episodes. Moran Reznik from Lusha presented how hyper-parameter tuning can improve #BertTopic, step by step: embedding --> clustering --> dimensionality reduction, and how to explore each step. His #HarryPotter example was fun! I can't wait for his next talk on how he created the simulated data: Hogwarts pupils complaining on different topics, depending on a specific distribution according to their house. Lastly, Yonathan Guttel from Lightricks showed an interesting developed approach for time series data analysis with #ARIMA, using the prediction for each point in time as an additional feature when building the model. Yaniv holds a PhD from the Hebrew University and has built data science teams from scratch at companies like Lightricks. He's a true genius and one of a kind. 40,000. Let that sink in. Time is the enemy of everything, if you can weather the storm, time, you will find yourself and your company achieving awesome things. We are surviving, and I am excited now that the platform is built to bring in additional members to clean up the css to get it out to the public. I recommend honestly the bootstrap approach until things stabilize or serious funding or revenue are coming in. hire the talent you need to address the problem. half of companies kill themselves out of ego in hiring those who contribute to long term solutions that may exacerbate the short term. food for thought. it's only on supporting each other, rowing together, we weather the storm. #israel #israeliinnovation

Since October 7th I have been closely tracking the Israeli tech ecosystem. Almost one year to the war I am proud to have led the effort to sum up this period in a comprehensive report. A new report by the Rise Institute and Google examines the state of Israel in the field of AI. It provides an in-depth analysis of investments in the field, the number of employees in the industry, and more. There is also a reference to how optimistic Israelis are about the use of AI compared to others (you can already guess...). I am also proud to mention that I am a member of the steering committee of the Rise organization (alongside many other great people). The organization was established to promote the field in Israel and aspires to influence policy and regulation in the country. There will be many more interesting things on the horizon. 🍣 SALMon: A Suite for Acoustic Language Model Evaluation 🍣 I am excited to share our new paper studying the acoustic awareness of Speech Language Models, with Amit Roth and Yossi Adi at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. More details in the project page and paper links below. 👇🏼 Large Language Models have made a massive impact, but human interactions in speech contain lots of information beyond the spoken text! To fully understand these interactions, speech language models need to address nuanced acoustic information like sentiment, background noise etc. For instance, the phrase ``Yeah, I'm sure'' could be sarcastic indicating lack of belief or sincere and sympathetic, depending on the intonation. Likewise, a request for a song recommendation to fit a mood might elicit different responses if the background noise and accent indicate a beach in Mexico 🌊🇲🇽💃🏻 or a formal wedding in England 👰🏼‍♀️🤵🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 We present a dataset and modelling based metrics to check how well speech language models detect acoustic inconsistencies and lack of coherence between acoustics and the spoken content. We evaluate a wide range of aspects, namely: speaker identity, gender, sentiment, background noise and room acoustics.
