𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞.😅 Let me share a story about a job interview that taught me a valuable lesson about handling feedback and adapting on the fly. A while back, I had a promising interview for a UX design role at a tech startup 🚀, and eager to stand out, I decided to do more than just prepare answers. I took a deep dive into their website, noticed some areas for improvement, and created a redesigned landing page that I believed could elevate their brand 💡. Fast forward to the interview, I confidently presented my redesign, expecting it to be a hit. But instead of the excitement I imagined, the lead designer gave me a cold stare. It became clear that my redesign wasn’t landing as I had hoped. I didn’t get the role, and at first, I didn’t understand why 🤔. Looking back, I can now see where I went wrong. Here are a few ways I could have handled the situation better: 𝟏. 💡 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲’𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭: I should have asked more questions during the interview to better understand their design goals and challenges before jumping in with my own solutions. Tailoring my redesign to address their specific needs would have made my pitch more relevant. 𝟐. 🛠️ 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲: Instead of positioning my redesign as a replacement, I could have framed it as an enhancement. Highlighting the strengths of their existing design and how my changes could address particular pain points would have been a more constructive approach. 𝟑. 🗣️ 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲: Rather than being caught off guard by the feedback, I could have used it as a learning opportunity. Asking for clarification and engaging in a discussion about their design vision might have turned the conversation in a more positive direction. 𝟒. 🔄 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭: I should have asked what specific aspects of the design didn’t resonate with them and adjusted my approach during the conversation. Demonstrating adaptability is a powerful skill in any interview. 𝟓. 📩 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐔𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: Even though the interview didn’t go as planned, following up afterward with a professional thank you and a request for further feedback could have kept the door open for future roles. This experience taught me the importance of truly understanding the client’s needs, presenting ideas thoughtfully, and handling criticism constructively. And to the recruiter from that company, thank you for the experience—it’s made me a better designer today! 😅 For any designers out there who’ve faced similar interview challenges, how did you handle it? #Usability_testing often feels like a routine checkpoint in the UX process, but it doesn’t have to be that way A few days ago, we conducted a usability test for a new big telecom and lifestyle app in the region, taking a fresh, more engaging approach instead of sticking to a traditional structure. To make the session feel natural and reflective of real-life use, we introduced playful elements. Participants were given challenges and rewards as they navigated the app and complete tasks with different scenarios instead of sticking to a traditional structure, creating an interactive, gamified experience. This not only encouraged them to explore the app’s features more freely but also revealed authentic insights into their behavior. By blending gamification with real-world scenarios, the usability test became both enjoyable and insightful. 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗫 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱? Let's take a look at recent data from the market. The past two years have been challenging for the UX and design industry, with the market experiencing one of its toughest shakeups yet. Jakub Karlec, a UX pioneer, summed it up greatly in his most recent article, analyzing UX job data in the Czech Republic. I recommend reading it as its insights are relevant all across Europe. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮, 𝗜 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱. A 2024 prediction by KBV Research estimates steady 𝗨𝗫 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 at least until 2030. It should be driven by further expansion of e-commerce, strenghtening need for customer-centric solutions and growing usage of digital devices. The last argument is in line with recent IDC market research data pointing to 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. The first one is unsurprisingly AI. The other is the rise of wearables and AR/VR devices. These emerging areas will create exciting opportunities for designers, opening up uncharted territories and the need to set entirely new standards for various platforms. Another indirect optimistic cue is Business Research Insights report published just weeks ago. It 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 in the market value of tools for designers and researchers. In the light of such data, the recent decline in UX and design roles seems more like a tough, yet rational market correction following the covid boom, which temporarily inflated demand for designers and developers. However, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿-𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, user understanding, and entering the market with highly usable products has only grown stronger and will continue to do so.
