Idle Outpost 🧟‍♀️ by Rockbite Games Armenia published by AppQuantum already scaled to $150K a day in July 🤑. With more than 10 Million downloads and $6 Mil. IAP revenue behind it, (Ads are probably more than 50% on top of this 😅) we couldn't miss this very interesting iteration on 2 of our favorite games. Can you guess which ones? 😎 As seen on the images below Idle Outpost is a clever combination of Lessmore's Eatventure and JoyNet Games's Legend of Mushroom 🍄. Instead of food you are selling supplies to other Zombie Apocalypse "customers" 💲 and you keep finding survivor gear with your trusty dog on the way through Zombie wasteland. I keep saying this all the time, but Zombie theme works with everything and makes your CPI low 🤣 "change my mind". Because you are basically playing 2 idle cores in parallel the game demands an astounding amount of engagement, which is an interesting solution to fix the stuckness of Idle genre. Because if you get stuck in the first one (upgrade costs gets too high) you move to next one where power progression is based on HP/DMG scaling and if bosses gets too strong there, you go back to the first one. I think the game could use a little bit more longer onboarding as unlocking 10+ different currencies in 2 days (basically 2 separate games) is a little bit too much for the western user 😅. There are also some very interesting iterations, which fix some of the issues of the previous games such as the turn based auto combat system, which is also PvP, level design of the "restaurants", gear recipes, profit stacking, etc. Join us as we talk about all of this with Matej 🦩 & Felix 😎 a great job Rockbite Games Armenia for being able to create this interesting combo! Colorwood & Playdoku by Burny Games are together making more than $100K a day in ad revenue 🤑, with Colorwood doing more than 100K downloads a day having its record month currently 😁 We took a closer look at both games with the company CEO, Anatolii Henis 😎. Both games are very core gameplay centric, with very slim metagame and nearly no IAP 💸 revenue. Level design is the key here, as mechanics curve are much thinner than your usual casual puzzle game 🧩. As seen on the images on the main menu, the company is building upon its own expertise and extending its "template" as it already has multiple Colorwood games in soft launch on its portfolio account. Playdoku iterates on the block puzzle gameplay, with a metagame twist of "training your brain" 🧠. We have seen this work very well with Impulse, especially in the creatives, which Playdoku directly puts into its levels. Literally every 3rd or 4th levels is an easy shape based block puzzle that is seen in its creatives, helping with the UA funnel onboarding. Colorwood on the other hand is an iteration on the water 🌊 sort gameplay. It does the same with the UA creatives levels with some crazy mechanics from the creatives. Because the sorting is done with bricks 🧱 instead of a liquid, it unlocks a lot of different mechanics in the level design, giving it a much needed differentiator in the sorting category, where there is 20 water sort puzzle clones 😅. GameJams time! This weekend I was participating in LudumDare 55 game jam and this was the first time for 8 game jams when my team contained of 6 people. It was so fun to produce a little game with such a great team as mine, and wonderful team building experience. The theme was “Summoning” and, surprisingly, brainstorming was only 2-3 hours long, unlike other game jams, usually it takes 6+ hours to think up some good ideas and talk about it with team. We’ve finished with some bugs, but polishing is the solution, so I’m glad to introduce you Demanager, where you are presenting yourself as a dispatcher, you will come face to face with the consequences of people’s desires and try not to go crazy, because in the season of mercury retrograde everything doesn’t go as you would like… And, once again, game jams are fun! 🎮 What's Amir Gaming This Week? 🎲 Hello friends! I'm excited to introduce a new series, “What's Amir Gaming This Week?” that celebrates greatness in the games ecosystem. In these challenging times, it's important not only to stay informed but also to appreciate and celebrate remarkable achievements occurring in our field. For the first installment, I’m highlighting a gem and new favorite of mine, "Divinity: Original Sin The Board Game." As an avid collector of over 100 board games, this game distinguishes itself with its engaging gameplay, strategic depth, and the enjoyment it brings to every session. Larian Studios, known for their significant contributions to the video games world with titles like "Baldur's Gate 3," have masterfully extended their expertise into board games. "Divinity: Original Sin" successfully translates Larian’s rich storytelling and engaging gameplay into a physical format. Upon opening the box, players are greeted with a whirlwind of game components. These include detailed miniatures, multifaceted player boards, and over a thousand vividly illustrated cards, on a scale I haven't seen outside of Gloomhaven. The game also provides organizational trays to manage these pieces, a rarity and much appreciated. Character creation is engaging, allowing players to choose from predefined characters or to design their own using a mix of skills, backgrounds, and gear. The choices are vast, and there is room for even greater specialization. The game eschews traditional tile-based maps for a novel "Divine Atlas," a ring-bound book that dynamically serves as the game board. This atlas speeds up game setup and simplifies gameplay, as players explore their surroundings, making decisions and interacting with scenarios that propel the story forward and sometimes lead to combat. Combat is streamlined and true to its video games origins. It features a tactical, accessible system where actions are controlled by Action Points and an innovative cooldown mechanic for abilities, demanding strategic planning and management. Elemental interactions and various combat effects introduce additional layers of strategy and unpredictability. Boss battles offer distinct challenges with specialized abilities that require players to adjust strategies. The game encourages multiple playthroughs, with choices in one session affecting future sessions. With its strategic gameplay, exquisite components, and a compelling narrative, "Divinity: Original Sin The Board Game" is a profound extension of its digital counterpart into the world of board games. If you crave Larian in a box, this is it. This is the best board game I have bought in 10+ years and the best campaign-based board game I have ever played. Don’t worry about running out – when you love it, there is enough DLC to last you a lifetime. It’s amazing to see AI designers use those systems to create behaviors that even surprise us. Building robust, deterministic systems that offer both control and flexibility keeps the work constantly engaging. The last year I’ve delved into a massive proprietary codebase focused on AI and gameplay programming, which has sharpened my skills in designing scalable tools that help both game designers and players enjoy seamless, high-performance experiences. Since my job is desk-bound, I make the most of my free time with outdoor activities. My favorite hobbies are swimming and freestyle wrestling—they help me stay active and unwind after long hours of coding. The environment at Desider AB is fantastic. One of our potential students was so passionate about teaching game dev that his orientation call turned into an interview and a job offer. #Wearehiring Aryan Saxena, now our Subject Matter Expert, has a unique story about how he came to work with us at Outscal. Aryan first discovered Outscal when we ran our Launchpad cohorts—live sessions open to anyone interested in learning game development. He joined for a day or two and closely observed what Outscal was doing. Then came the 2023 IGDC. Aryan met my team and me and spent the whole day networking and sharing his passion for game development. I even introduced him to Shalin, impressed by Aryan’s enthusiasm for video games and development. During our conversations, it was clear that Aryan had something special to offer. I asked him to review some modules from one of our courses and provide feedback. Within two days, Aryan returned a detailed list of issues and bugs in our game projects. It was so thorough that I had to send Mridul Agrawal, our Content Lead, to sync with Aryan and address the feedback. We moved on from there, and a few days passed until Aryan enrolled in our advanced game development course to upskill. For those unfamiliar with our process, we take orientation calls with students to understand their expectations. This time, Malhar was in charge of Aryan’s call. But that orientation call went in a completely different direction—it turned into Aryan's interview. The passion Aryan displayed for game development was the spark we were looking for on our team. We took a chance on Aryan, and we haven’t regretted it for a moment. Today, Aryan supports our Content Team with his expertise in C++/C#/Unity and is constantly finding innovative ways to teach game development in the most engaging way possible. PS: Aryan even rode 250 KMS on a bike from his hometown to our head office for his first day at work. Just saw this awesome ad for 'Solitaire Grand Harvest' by Playtika, showcasing their newest in-game collaboration with Snoopy! 🐶🌻 The mobile ad highlights Snoopy’s journey into the game world, complete with adorable challenges and the chance to build Snoopy’s camp. It’s all part of a six-month campaign celebrating Snoopy's 75th anniversary. 🎉 What really caught my eye is how they use the ad to feature new game events—a strategy I don’t see often in mobile gaming ads.
