Dan Grotsky, Chief Growth Officer, was honored to share insights from Groundwork BioAg's journey at the 3rd Annual Carbon Removal Conference at Microsoft's Herzilya offices, where the panel discussion about carbon dioxide removal (CDR) was so compelling that even a ballistic missile alert couldn’t replace carbon sequestration as the center of attention. The panel of #climatech colleagues, including Yehuda Borenstein of RepAir Carbon Capture and Carbonade, Hagit Horowitz from CarbonBlue, Yuval Lavi from TERRRA, Avi Luvchik, PhD from Oporto Carbon, and moderated by Maya Jacobs, explored where to draw the line between nature-based and tech-based CDR. The science is clear and convincing: vast networks of mycorrhizal fungi sequester significant amounts of carbon - 13.1 GtCO2e yearly - into the soil where it belongs. But industrial agricultural practices have destroyed mycorrhizal networks over the past decades. Restoring mycorrhizal fungi in cropland also revives their ability to sequester and retain carbon - just like mycorrhizae do in undisturbed non-agricultural soil. It's no secret that water stress - whether from floods or drought - is taking a severe toll on crops worldwide. Recent data from the World Resources Institute shows that one quarter of the world’s crops are now impacted by water stress. Crops are most vulnerable when grown in soils that lack the ability to properly absorb and retain water, often due to insufficient underground microbial life. Mycorrhizal fungi can help.
