Underage vaping in Ireland is a big problem. Last year, The Irish Times ran a story that revealed more than one-third of young people aged 13 to 16 in Ireland currently vape. Last month, a Vape Superstore study showed that 80% of Northern Ireland vapers have never been asked for age verification. Ensuring children get age-appropriate experiences online and offline is fast becoming a priority for industry and Government, and accurate age estimation is a vital part of that. We recently partnered with Garry Doyle, Brian Hurley and the team at Johnston Retail Services in a deal that will see them bring our AgeAI solution to retailers across Ireland. Last week was actually pretty important for a number of big Irish companies, real companies with huge impact on the domestic economy. In the Business Post my extended analysis of Kerry Group’s decision to sell its dairy business to its founding co-op for a total of €500 million. Important for all sides on the deal, but also very significant for Ireland’s dairy industry and its long term survival in an era when sustainability is perhaps the biggest challenge. The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland (ASAI) has recently upheld a complaint against the National Dairy Council (NDC) for "greenwashing" dairy in a TV advertisement. The ad claimed Irish milk was "naturally nutritious, sustainably produced," but complaints argued that the Irish dairy industry contributes to environmental damage and greenhouse gas emissions. 🥛 This incident highlights the importance of scrutinizing green claims and combating greenwashing. 🌱 While Irish farming groups often tout the carbon efficiency of dairy and beef production, data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) paints a more complex picture. Irish milk has a higher emissions intensity compared to many EU countries, and beef production is middling. The growth of the dairy herd has led to increased absolute emissions, with enteric fermentation (methane burped out by cows) accounting for a significant portion of Ireland's agricultural emissions. Ibec published its new Economic Outlook today. Its forecasting GDP growth of 2% in 2024 and 2.7% in 2025. The report highlights that while the Irish economy is experiencing some moderation in growth after five years of remarkable expansion, the economic outlook remains positive. However, the Outlook also notes that under-delivery in critical infrastructure—such as water, housing, energy, transport, and skills —is constraining the potential for growth in both domestic businesses and foreign direct investment.

Q3 Economic Trends results are out and some questions in the survey focused on trade links between Cork and Northern Ireland. Commenting on the findings that 16% of the respondents have business links in Northern Ireland Rob Horgan said "Market access and regulatory differences present challenges but they also present an opportunity for businesses to innovate and adapt. By streamlining connectivity and addressing regulatory disparities, we can open doors to more seamless trade between Cork and Northern Ireland, creating new partnerships that benefit both regions." In May, Cork and Dublin chambers participated in a forum event along with Dublin Chamber hosted by the NORTHERN IRELAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY. At that forum, the restoration of flights between Cork and Belfast along with the development of a higher-speed rail between both cities emerged as two recommendations. The chamber members also met with politicians to discuss key areas for an all-island approach to economic development. Conor Healy, Cork Chamber CEO, said Northern Ireland’s unique position as part of the UK internal market while, at the same time, having unique access to the EU’s single market of nearly 450 million people, provides a solid opportunity for growth. Interesting new data from Eurostat reported by Irish Independent last week show that the proportion of 18-34 year-olds living with parents in Ireland fell sharply in 2023, but remains above the EU average. The sharp decline is not surprising for two reasons. Firstly, it reflects an unwinding of a temporary return to the family home by many young adults during the Covid pandemic. Secondly, various Government schemes which facilitate the formation of independent households were introduced, enhanced, or extended in early 2023.
