In this episode, we discuss Scaling Smart: Accelerating Large Language Model Pre-training with Small Model Initialization by Mohammad Samragh, Iman Mirzadeh, Keivan Alizadeh Vahid, Fartash Faghri, Minsik Cho, Moin Nabi, Devang Naik, Mehrdad Farajtabar. The paper presents HyperCloning, a technique for initializing large language models with smaller, pre-trained models to leverage their predictive power. This method allows large models to require less training time and fewer GPU hours by scaling up small models while preserving their functionalities. HyperCloning offers a viable solution to efficiently manage the high costs and time investments in training large language models.

⏳ Sometime back I interviewed ✍ a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) for my team, and the difference between a good SRE and a great one became evident through a simple question about curl and how it works. While a typical answer would cover the basics of how curl operates, the response I received showcased the depth of expertise a great SRE possesses. - Resolving the URL using internal system calls like getaddrinfo(). - Establishing a connection with the server by creating a network socket with socket() and initiating a TCP connection using connect(). - Sending an HTTP request through the socket via send(). - Receiving and displaying the server's response by receiving data with recv(), utilizing poll()/select() for non-blocking I/O, configuring socket options with setsockopt(), and closing the socket connection with close(). This level of detail and understanding of the internal workings of tools like curl truly sets exceptional SREs apart. 🚀 I’m excited to share my journey of developing Pulse, a personal safety app designed to help users in times of danger by automatically sending SOS alerts based on abnormal heart rate detection. This project was a fantastic team effort, and I want to thank my incredible teammates Ahmad Syafiq Kamil, Luthfi Misbachul Munir, Quinela Wensky, Michelle Chau, and Giventus Marco Victorio Handojo for their hard work and dedication. 💡 The idea came from the need to provide a quick, seamless way for women to reach out for help in moments of fear or danger, without having to unlock their phones or manually send messages. Pulse does this automatically when a sudden increase in heart rate is detected. In a month, our team developed an MVP with key features like: - Automatic Fear Detection - SOS Alerts & Repeated Notifications - Real-Time Location Tracking From using Apple Push Notification Service and Firebase Messaging for alerts to ContactKit for managing emergency contacts, this project gave me the chance to dive into new frameworks, improve my skills, and learn the power of clean architecture. Ensuring that programs that we build make full use of CPU without wasting a single CPU cycle ensures that our program reaches completion faster and we are making the machine work to it's full capacity. To make full use of CPU potential we introduce parallelism into our programs. Modern programming languages like go, kotlin, elixir etc make use of Light Weight Threads (LWT) for parallelism which are lighter in memory requirement and their scheduling is handled by language runtime to ensure progress even if one of the LWT is blocking a thread. Celebrating Milestones and Achievements of VisaVision VisaVision has been an exciting journey of innovation, inspired by the need to provide better insights into the H-1B visa application process. Today, I’m excited to share some of the key milestones and achievements I’ve reached so far. One of the first major milestones was gathering and cleaning a substantial dataset of H-1B visa applications. This laid the foundation for building my predictive model, which has been continually refined to enhance accuracy. On the frontend, I’ve designed an intuitive interface to ensure users can easily navigate and gain insights from the data. I successfully implemented a machine learning model that predicts visa approval outcomes with promising accuracy and visualization of trends over the past three years. This project has been an incredible learning experience, allowing me to deepen my expertise in data science, AI, and full-stack development. Through VisaVision, I’ve learned the importance of iterative development and the value of continuous improvement, ensuring that each version of the project is better than the last. As I continue to develop VisaVision, I’m looking forward to deploying it and gathering user feedback to further enhance its capabilities.
