The latest edition of the 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘅 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 has unveiled a troubling trend among Irish businesses, with almost three-quarters (𝟳𝟰%) reporting an increase in cyber attacks over the past year (2023: 71%, 2022: 50%). The report reveals cyber attacks are coming at an increasing rate, with Irish businesses reporting an average of 58 cyber attacks per year - more than one a week. https://lnkd.in/dqxhdKaS 🚨 Ireland Fines Meta €91 Million for Storing Passwords in Plaintext 🚨 The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has hit Meta Platforms Ireland Limited (MPIL) with a massive €91 million ($100 million) fine for storing hundreds of millions of user passwords in plaintext without proper encryption! 😱 This incident, which dates back to 2019, saw Meta admit that certain user passwords were stored in a readable format on their internal systems, potentially affecting hundreds of millions of Facebook Lite users, tens of millions of other Facebook users, and millions of Instagram users. 🔐 What happened? During a routine security review, Meta found these passwords were stored without encryption or cryptographic protection. Meta disclosed the breach publicly and notified the DPC, which launched an investigation into the company’s data handling practices. ❗ Key GDPR violations include: - Article 33(1): Failure to notify the DPC of a personal data breach in a timely manner. - Article 33(5): Inadequate documentation of the data breach and failure to maintain necessary records. - Article 5(1)(f): Lack of encryption and inadequate security measures to protect users' passwords. - Article 32(1): Failure to implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to safeguard user data. ⚠️ Although Meta claims there was no evidence of abuse or unauthorized access, the passwords were available internally and could have been exposed to potential risks. 🛡️ Storing sensitive data like passwords in plaintext is a serious violation of user trust and data privacy. Today, along with WIN | Worldwide Independent Network of MR & OP, we published the WIN World Survey looking at Data, Fraud and Technology in Ireland and globally. The main findings are: 1.     Ireland has the highest phishing incidence globally with 64% of Irish adults reporting that they have experienced phishing. 2.     Over half (55%) of Irish adults have been spammed by companies. 3.     1 in 5 (22%) Irish people have had their bank account hacked. 4.     Two thirds (67%) are concerned about sharing financial information. 5.     23% are aware of what happens to personal information after they share it with a debt collector.
