Sales growth in Food & Drink retailers held at +3.3% in the 4 weeks ending 18th May 2024, against last year’s tough comparatives of double Bank Holidays, King’s Coronation and sunnier weather. Online share improved to 13.0%, as wet mixed weather has continued, so online sales growth is ahead of industry averages as we lap last year’s warmer temperatures.     Online fmcg growth +4.4% (NIQ Homescan) is explained by a +4.1% increase in Orders as opposed to Shopper acquisition which has declined slightly. This is perhaps a stronger indicator of channel health and indicative that the channel is meeting more of the needs of the 27% of households who shop the channel on a 4 week basis. As we enter the summer trading months, this challenge will become increasingly important, as well as ‘instant refreshment' including ice-creams and soft drinks, shoppers will also demand availability of seasonal products so innovative convenient fresh foods for alfresco dining, long drinks and cocktails and non food lifestyle solutions to bring comfort and relaxation to their outdoor spaces.   #NIQThoughtLeadershipUK #nielseniq #NIQ #fmcg #foodandbeverage #foodretail #weather #grocery #online #insights #summer

Good news for the Irish retail industry! Official figures have shown that retail sales in Ireland rose by 1.7% in March, compared to the previous month. In addition, sales were up 1% in the year to March. This is a positive sign for the industry as it continues to recover from the impact of the pandemic. Irish grocery sector experiences unprecedented growth in October 🛒📈 The Irish grocery retail sector witnessed robust growth during October 2024, marking it as the highest-performing month of the year to date. Today we reported our Half Year results for 2024. Group margins have increased by 160 basis points, with profits up 6.6% to €552m for the half. Group volumes have also increased by 1.7% (up 3.1% in the Taste & Nutrition Division). Edmond Scanlon, CEO of Kerry Group said; “We are pleased to report a good performance across the first half of the year. Taste & Nutrition delivered good volume growth ahead of our end markets, with strong profit growth and margin expansion across the business, contributing to our earnings per share growth of 9.1% in the period”. 📉 Grocery inflation stands at 2.6% in the 12 weeks to 12 May 2024, down 13.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year. Once again, we see grocery inflation fall for the thirteenth month in a row – now sitting at the lowest level we have seen since March 2022. This is welcome news, but Irish consumers are still looking for bargains with over 25% of value sales on promotion, down 4% since January 2024. Retailers are also promoting their own label ranges to get shoppers through the door. Sales of own label are performing well and growing ahead of the total market at 5.7% year-on-year, with shoppers spending an additional €86m year-on-year. Irish consumers celebrated by dusting off their barbeques at the first opportunity. This month, shoppers spent an additional €614k on sausages, €497k on chilled burgers and grills, €454k on chilled prepared salads, and €3.4 million on soft drinks, to make the most of the sun. Sales of beer and wine were also up 4.1%, with shoppers spending an additional €2.7 million compared to last month.
