As healthcare evolves, so too do the roles of its professionals. We (with Ewan Ferlie, Graeme Currie, louise fitzgerald and Justin Waring PhD FAcSS FRSA) conducted research on the emergence of "hybrid" professionals—doctors and other clinicians who take on management roles within the healthcare system. We found two distinct types of hybrid professionals: incidental hybrids and willing hybrids. Incidental hybrids see management as a temporary duty, taken up out of obligation rather than ambition. Their focus remains on protecting traditional professional norms while shielding colleagues from managerial pressures. On the other hand, willing hybrids embrace management as an integral part of their identity. They often view healthcare delivery as a collective responsibility, integrating managerial tools to improve patient outcomes and address systemic challenges. This distinction matters because how hybrids perceive their roles influences how they enact change. Incidental hybrids tend to buffer traditional professionalism from managerial influences. Meanwhile, willing hybrids challenge outdated practices and push for reforms that align professionalism with contemporary healthcare needs. For policymakers, this research underscores the importance of supporting hybrid professionals. Formal training, mentorship, and identity-based leadership development can help clinicians navigate the complexities of hybrid roles. Importantly, these supports should nurture a balance—respecting the core values of professionalism while equipping hybrids with the tools to lead organizational transformation. Hybrid professionals are not merely managers; they are change agents who bridge the gap between clinical excellence and efficient healthcare delivery. We are back with a new episode! In this episode, Prof Finbarr Murphy and Erin King chat with Prof Deirdre O'Loughlin O'Loughlin about her research and newly published book, "Researching Poverty and Austerity: Theoretical Approaches, Methodologies and Policy Applications". A book that was longlisted for the CABS Management Book of the year 2024. Deirdre's research critically explores the intersection between marketing, consumption, vulnerability and social/public policy within several key contexts, including debt and austerity research, family care, and health and financial services co-creation. Her research greatly impacts several key domains, specifically in exposing the effects of austerity, credit and debt consumption, highlighting marketing and consumer responsibility, and identifying the social and public policy implications. 'Poverty is a complex global challenge rooted in intertwined social, economic and political factors, which excludes people from participating fully in normalised social and market-based activities. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated poverty-related issues such as food insecurity, and growing numbers of people are having to rely on welfare assistance. This pandemic, coupled with austerity measures implemented across many European countries over the past years, has negatively impacted towns, cities, regions and countries, leaving places and communities depleted. This edited volume curates a collection of relevant research addressing the challenges of poverty and the political-economic measures that perpetuate it. Kicked off an interesting project with Department for Science, Innovation and Technology on the barriers and enablers to technology adoption. This project will explore the firm and sector level opportunities and challenges faced, to understand the reasons why technological adoption rates in the UK are poor compared to the OECD. The work will add to the existing tech adoption evidence base which consists largely of quantitative data on tech adoption trends with in depth further qualitative research. Lots to think about for now… Working with a great team on this, and drawing on our work with the Innovation & Research Caucus and Technology in Professional Services (TiPS) Accelerator.

Interesting new data from Eurostat reported by Irish Independent last week show that the proportion of 18-34 year-olds living with parents in Ireland fell sharply in 2023, but remains above the EU average. The sharp decline is not surprising for two reasons. Firstly, it reflects an unwinding of a temporary return to the family home by many young adults during the Covid pandemic. Secondly, various Government schemes which facilitate the formation of independent households were introduced, enhanced, or extended in early 2023. Looking at the graph below, it is striking that Ireland only dipped below the EU average between 2009-2015 when a net 88,000 people aged 15-44 left the country. https://lnkd.in/eaUvdB5D

I don’t usually write personal thoughts on LinkedIn – perhaps it reflects my vulnerability – However, today, after the Enabling SME event (https://lnkd.in/eX_RxbpM), a mixture of relief, disheartenment and reflection on what to learn and what’s next, I feel I need to spell out some personal feelings and thoughts to be able to sleep! Some might say today’s event wasn't a successful one – there could have been more people, more discussion and more suggestions. Yes, perhaps. Nonetheless, was it meaningful? I would say yes! I have been exploring the concept of ‘meaningfulness’ for my research on meaningful work – this notion can be associated with two occasions, namely, feeling authenticity and the value of action being shared widely (e.g., my action creates meaning not only to me but also to others). Having been feeling ‘authentic’ in this process? Yes! Throughout the process of developing scenario and organising this event aiming at contributing to co-creation of the scenario, I felt authentic interests, enthusiasm and efforts in learning and exploring 1) myself – the bias, pre-conception and assumptions that I have had but was not aware of; 2) the technology – the basic of it, what might be possible or not, what can be done or not, and thus, what might be desirable or not; and 3) experiences of disabled people – the challenges they are facing in their daily life, the future they are hoping and the reality that makes them being sceptical about the hope.  Was the value shared with others? Absolutely! Through this process, I’ve met people who just do kind things simply because they believe the value of what I am doing. Thank you Ingo Frommholz for having been my personal scientific advisor 😉. Karsten Fleischer, at the School of Physics, has been awarded an Science Foundation Ireland 'Frontiers for the Future' grant along with Prof Igor Shvets at TCD to search for a cheaper alternative to Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) - a critical, rare material used in smartphones and other devices. ITO, which is a 'Rare Earth' is an excellent conductor of electricity and is transparent - two properties that ensure it is a crucial component for the working of mobile phones, flatscreens and solar panels. It’s a trace metal and byproduct of Zinc mining - and extremely expensive. A cheaper substitute for ITO must be discovered before electronic and solar-cell based devices can be produced on a larger scale. Why do only a few people radicalize when so many have been exposed to at least some of the causes of radicalisation? This is the specificity problem and it is the most important unanswered question facing terrorism research. Ten years ago, Marc Sageman provoked an academic storm when he said that terrorism studies had “stagnated”. Many took his criticism as a swipe at terrorism research in general, but Sageman was singling out the specificity problem. And he was right. While terrorism research was making enormous strides on other issues, the specificity problem remained unanswered. Worse, there was little evidence that the type of research needed to begin answering it was even in the pipelines. To get the evidence needed, research would have to not only develop a better understanding of terrorists and violent extremists, but also a far better understanding of their compatriots: people who lived on the same streets, went to the same schools, engaged with the same online milieus, but who did not progress to involvement in terrorism and violent extremism. The specificity problem cannot be resolved until we have that type of data to work with. There are signs though that such evidence is finally emerging. The latest issue of Studies in Conflict & Terrorism includes one such study: an article by Emma Ylitalo-James and myself which tries to contribute to the evidence base needed here. This was first published online in 2022 and has just now made it to a printed issue. The study is based on research with former paramilitaries in Northern Ireland and a control group of supporters. The control group supported the cause but did not get involved themselves. Among the initial findings reported here was that the supporters were less likely to live close to violent flashpoints and they also benefited from more varied social networks. Yes and no. Test and learn can work with inventiveness. Faraday tested and learned in a Bayesian style. But the status quo of the day rejected his pursuit of change. (We all, though, use light bulbs nowadays.) Learning is not just about quick-win gimmicks but the opportunity to evolve. That takes guts as well analysis: the UK has a strong tradition of inventiveness but that means pursuing risk as opportunity rather than running away from it as a threat of change. Get that cultural balance right and yes the UK could be entrepreneurial again.
