As a Windows Server Administrator, there are several essential commands you should be familiar with. These commands help in managing, troubleshooting, and automating tasks on a Windows Server. Here are some must-know commands: 1. Basic System Commands systeminfo: Displays detailed configuration information about the computer. hostname: Shows the name of the server. ipconfig: Displays the server’s network configuration, including IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. ping <hostname/IP>: Tests the network connectivity to another system. 2. PowerShell Commands (Automation & Management) Get-Service: Lists all services running on the server. Start-Service <ServiceName> / Stop-Service <ServiceName>: Starts or stops a specific service. Get-Process: Displays all running processes on the system. Restart-Computer: Restarts the server remotely or locally. Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned: Configures the execution policy for running PowerShell scripts. Get-EventLog -LogName System: Displays system event logs for troubleshooting. 3. Active Directory Commands dsadd user <DN>: Adds a new user to Active Directory. dsmod user <DN>: Modifies a user’s account properties in Active Directory. dsquery user -name <name>: Searches for users in Active Directory. Get-ADUser <username>: Retrieves detailed information about a user from Active Directory. repadmin /replsummary: Checks Active Directory replication health. dcdiag: Diagnoses the health of Domain Controllers. 4. Networking Commands netstat -an: Displays all active network connections and listening ports. tracert <hostname>: Traces the path packets take to a destination host. nslookup <hostname>: Looks up DNS records for a domain name. netsh int ip reset: Resets TCP/IP settings to resolve network issues. 5. Group Policy Management gpupdate /force: Forces an update of Group Policy settings on the server. gpresult /r: Displays the Resultant Set of Policies (RSoP) applied to the server or a specific user. Get-GPO -All: Lists all Group Policies in the domain. 6. Disk & File System Management chkdsk /f <drive>: Checks and fixes errors on a disk. fsutil volume diskfree <drive>: Shows free disk space for the drive. diskpart: Launches the disk partition management tool. format <drive>: Formats the specified disk drive. 7. Backup & Restore Commands wbadmin start backup: Starts a backup job using Windows Server Backup. wbadmin get versions: Displays details about available backups. wbadmin start recovery: Restores files, volumes, applications, or system state from a backup. 8. Service Management net start <service>: Starts a Windows service. net stop <service>: Stops a Windows service. sc query <service>: Retrieves the status of a service. Are you compliant? From the start of next month, Microsoft is rolling out mandatory multi-factor authentication (MFA) for Azure sign-in to help protect your data and identity from cyberattacks. By October, MFA will be required to sign in to the Azure portal, Microsoft Intune admin centre. This phase will then gradually be rolled out to all tenants worldwide.
