The return to growth in the first quarter followed five consecutive quarterly declines in Irish GDP. In 2012, Patrick Collison, co-founder of Irish payments technology company Stripe, said it would have been too difficult to set up the company in Ireland, because of the banking and investment systems and the talent pool here. More than a decade on, LinkedIn News Europe asked his brother, fellow Stripe co-founder, John Collison, if this would still be the case. For fintechs in particular, John Collison says, the regulatory environment has become easier, and startups in the space in both Ireland and the UK have been embraced, such as Revolut or Monzo. And while the talent pool is bigger than it used to be, it can be challenging for startups to keep hold of people. Apple, Meta, Google and many other US tech titans have set up their European headquarters in Ireland. Asked if the large number of tech giants help or hinder Ireland's startup scene, John Collison said they have a positive impact overall. "You're seeing a great training-up effect of people where they've experienced working in tech," he says . "There's a larger pool to hire from. We see this at Stripe where we hire people in our Dublin office and then they go off and work at a startup there. We would love it if they stayed working at Stripe but we're also very happy for them that they end up working at a startup and contributing to the Irish internet economy that way." FUNDING 🔊 In 2016 myself and James Gibbons launched our first fund in N Ireland, (pic below - we haven’t changed abit) which was designed to bring new liquidity into the market place. ✔️ At that time, it was hard to access funding, as the main stream lenders weren't getting involved much in supporting our business community in the secured lending space, and the Alternative Lending market was really only starting to get going. ▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎ Fast forward 8 years and we find ourselves re energised, reinvigorated and refocused, as that old liquidity chestnut, has raised its head again, causing havoc amongst the business community. Subsequently, and as a direct response to the current challenges (opportunity) we have spent the first quarter of 2024 at GDP CAPITAL back out fundraising, meeting with, reaching out and engaging with our existing and new investor clients. As funding and money becomes harder to come by, this presents opportunity for ourselves at GDP CAPITAL to help our existing and new client base in terms of the delivery of new capital. The good news being we are now well capitalised and in a position to support new and existing clients with their projects. We are a secured Alternative Lending business based in N Ireland, open to supporting real estate, health care, supermarket deals, residential projects and renewable energy projects across the island. The one caveat being for this round of funding, we will need an exit in place or a business plan which is deliverable.
