Great article in the Irish Times by Ronan Glynn. Despite a 70% increase in Irish health funding since 2019, healthcare providers are struggling to meet demand, with critical workforce shortages and rising costs. We’ve always believed that good design shapes the world around us... 📈 driving business growth by prioritising customer experience 🤝 shaping better public services that address people’s needs 👩🏽‍💻 building better products by streamlining user experience ⚙️ bringing experts together to accelerate business transformation This last bit is where we find ourselves at Big Motive, increasingly spending more and more time. After a minute working in this space, I’ve come to believe that #design is not the main event. Moreover, it’s a (maybe small) but no less essential part of building a technology product, service or business. John Maeda's best-supporting actor metaphor hasn’t aged. Designers and design teams are popping up in all kinds of places – none more so than in the transformation of health or (in human speak) in the advancement of healthcare through technology. Because one of the things that design teams are good at is understanding the human experience at the heart of any product or service. Making patient experience central to healthcare innovation makes so much sense - which is perhaps why design is playing an increasingly important role across #humanhealth and #lifesciences. As a design team working actively in the health sector in Ireland, we see so many examples of inspiring innovation – and the way in which design enables health startups and public health orgs to deliver new experiences that address previously unmet patient needs. We’re humbled to work with some of these teams and inspired by their achievements… so inspired that a few of our talented team members created a report to capture just some of the stories, themes and examples. This is the perfect time to introduce SPRYT to the Irish public. We will shift the view of medical administrators from gatekeepers to facilitators of care. IPPOSI (the Irish Platform for Patients’ Organisations, Science and Industry) should consider how companies like Spryt can make healthcare better for everyone. If we can do it with the NHS in the UK, then we should be allowed do it for the HSE and the Irish people too. It’s extraordinary that common sense measures such as the labelling of alcohol products has to be described as ‘controversial’. In Ireland polling data has found very strong public support for this (over 70%). The ‘controversy’ stems from an industry that has been allowed to get away with both setting and moving the goal posts in a manner matched only by the fossil fuels and tobacco industries. The Irish Department of Health has announced a comprehensive Digital Health Framework for 2024-30, aiming to transform the nation’s healthcare services through digital innovation. At Athera Healthcare, we recognise that the journey towards a more digitised and data-driven healthcare system still has many challenges. These challenges also present significant opportunities for innovation and improvement. One of the most pressing issues we face is the sheer volume of data generated within healthcare systems - both structured and unstructured. This data, if harnessed correctly, has the potential to transform healthcare delivery, but the current practice of manually extracting and piecing together data from various silos is inefficient and prone to error. This is why a single source of truth, where data can be accessed and analysed in real-time, is crucial. Relying on outdated methods like Excel spreadsheets for data analysis is not only resource-intensive but also risks missing critical insights. Accurate and timely data is the backbone of informed decision-making and effective patient care. I was at the Fine Gael Small Business Conference at the weekend where speakers included Minister Paschal Donohoe, Minister Peter Burke, Minister of State Emer Higgins. I spoke about the way current supports for business incentivise Winner takes all Behaviour, that it is welcome that eligibility for grants is improving, but that the nature of grant supports need to evolve to meet the 21st century challenges that these businesses face. At the moment the vast majority of government supports for businesses are for individual businesses in isolation, employment grants, feasibility grants, capital grants etc. This approach incentivises ‘winner take all’ behaviour, one business’s survival at the expense of others or the ecosystem, is unintentionally incentivised by this long established approach. We are now in an era where the efficient use of scare resources is more important than ever, pooling of resources between businesses where appropriate, rather than duplication, is now a priority. In the past state agencies were mandated not to support indigenous businesses addressing local or national markets due to a fear of displacement (i.e. we give money to Car Dealer A who grows their business and undermines Car Dealer B down the road). Now is the time to recalibrate these supports not to provide funding directly to individual business A or B in an area but to incentivise them to pool suitable functions and thereby increase productivity. Yes, they are in competition however there are certain back end functions that do not enhance competitive differentiation. And indeed most indigenous business sectors have representative organisations, the ethos of which is to promote their sector and internal cooperation amongst their members. The European Union has a forcing mechanism built into all grants to incentivise such collaboration, to be eligible to apply the applicant must be part of a collaborative consortium of partners across different regions and states, so it is not an alien concept! To navigate the Green and Digital transition at the level of locality communication needs to increase amongst micro businesses, this can help raise cooperation and over time real collaboration to jointly tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. However a new entity is needed at the grass roots level to facilitate this collaboration. I believe that this entity is the local hub, there are over 400 hubs across Ireland that are members of Connected Hubs. These hubs are ideally placed to deliver for communities at the level of the High Street through what we at the Dargan Institute call ‘Digital First Communities’, a model which harnesses technology to put people and places first.

Let's start a conversation about hospital productivity. What is a reasonable performance expectation from an additional €3bn investment and just under 15,500 extra staff between 2016 and 2022? What role does the likes of price & wage inflation, patient complexity, capital investment, shift to primary/community care and COVID-19 play? How does performance vary across different hospitals? Why is it so uneven? Ultimately how can we improve? Today the Minister for Health published a joint paper from the Department of Health - Ireland and HSE prepared by the Department's Irish Government Economic & Evaluation Service (IGEES) staff. It examines inputs and activity at a "whole of site" level within the publicly funded hospital system. This paper has already informed the work of the Productivity and Savings Taskforce and sets a baseline against which progress can be measured. Also launched was the Taskforce Action Plan which aims to minimise the financial risk to the HSE in 2024 and maximise the highest standard of care to the greatest number of people, within the budget available.
