Octopus Energy Generation has announced a new investment in Italian rooftop solar developer Coralsun. Coralsun is a recently formed business that was set up by local entrepreneurs to scale rooftop solar in Italy, with the goal of deploying 150 MW of new solar projects in the next five years, initially focusing on the north of the country. Coralsun is targeting energy intensive commercial and industrial SMEs, including logistics hubs, manufacturers and warehouses. “Businesses in sun-soaked Italy are sitting on a golden opportunity to harness what’s one of the cheapest energy resources – solar power,” said Alex Brierley, Co-Head of Octopus Energy Generation. “With electricity costs skyrocketing for businesses in Italy over the past few years, tapping into abundant solar resources will help cut costs for companies. This deal is a step towards us accelerating Italy’s green energy transition.” Octopus plans to invest €1 billion in the Italian renewables market by 2030 and has recently completed deals in the country’s wind, solar, and energy storage sector. Octopus made the investment in Coralsun on behalf of its Sky (ORI SCsp) fund. ABO Wind becomes ABO Energy. Leading international renewable energy developer ABO Wind has rebranded in Northern Ireland to become ABO Energy. The company is leading NI's shift away from fossil fuels, having achieved planning approval for 375MW of renewable electricity generation and storage. Initially set up to develop onshore wind farms, the company’s focus has expanded, and its expertise has grown to include battery energy storage, solar PV and hydrogen production. Commenting on the rebrand, Patricia McGrath (MIPI), ABO Energy’s Head of Development in Northern Ireland said: “The name ABO Energy much better reflects the breadth of skills and expertise we now have. "The rebrand does not involve a change in company ownership, and our ethos remains unchanged. According to the Annual Wind Energy Report 2023 by Wind Energy Ireland, onshore wind power has become one of the most efficient renewable energy sources in Ireland, with 35% of the country’s total electricity needs being supplied by onshore wind in 2023. Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables have partnered to launch a new onshore wind energy joint venture. The partnership aims to deliver up to 800MW of power generation capacity over the coming decade through an investment of up to EUR1 billion. According to Flogas Enterprise bio-CNG, together with biomethane, is a promising solution for the decarbonisation of the transport sector, in particular for heavy commercial vehicles that contribute a significant part of emissions. Ivan Yates chaired the excellent Renewables in Farming summit in Portlaoise, showcasing the opportunities for agri to embrace renewable energy opportunities. Contributors also correctly pointed out the challenges of securing grid connections and clearing the many planning hurdles that renewable technologies face. If we are to promote electrification of energy, we must invest rapidly in the grid and ensure the additional generation capacity that it will demand. Ireland’s path to net-zero emissions just got smoother. The country’s gas network operator, Gas Networks Ireland, recently announced it will deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. The plan will see the existing gas network repurposed into two separate networks that will transport 100% renewable gas, including one dedicated grid for #biomethane. The goal is to help Ireland achieve its climate objectives, while ensuring energy security and protecting economic growth. Irish gas and electricity prices closely follow the UK NBP. As the October contract nears expiry, it has broken out of its downward trend channel, suggesting potential price increases. Low Carbon is pleased announce a milestone in the construction of VIFOR Wind Farm in Romania.   Alongside Rezolv Energy, finance loan facilities of up to €291 million have been secured to support the initial construction of the wind farm. Phase 1 of the VIFOR project will install 192MW in capacity underpinned by five landmark commercial power purchase agreements (PPAs). Construction is scheduled to be completed within 18 months, with the wind farm coming onstream before the end of 2025. A planned expansion to 461MW will take place in Phase 2.   “Once built, Vifor will be one of the largest wind projects in Eastern Europe and reinforces our track record of working with institutional investors to deliver large-scale renewable infrastructure, while playing a key role supporting Romania’s efforts to decarbonise its electricity grid,” according to Martin Langham FIET , Managing Director at Low Carbon Investment Management.   Once completed this project will power the equivalent of more than 270,000 homes and will avoid approximately 540,000 tonnes of CO2e annually.   View the project here: https://lnkd.in/eXFRpFnB Low Carbon is on a mission. I’m looking forward to speaking at Solar & Storage Live in London on 29 April and sharing the great progress made by the Irish solar industry plus the potential scale. 2022 was a crucial year for solar in Ireland. There were several key events including: - The first utility scale solar farm connecting to the public electricity network; - More than 1.5GW of solar PV being awarded contracts in the second Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) auction; - Homeowners getting paid for electricity generated on their own rooftops; and - The Climate Action Plan 2030 solar PV target increased to 8GW, just thirteen months after the previous target of 1.5GW - 2.5GW had been set. From generating 0% of Irish electricity in 2021, to more than 1GW of solar PV connected to the grid by the start of 2024, the  utility scale and microgeneration sectors have been the early movers, but the commercial and industrial sector is now moving at pace. There is some exciting potential in these three segments. Utility scale – about half of the solar connected to the Irish system is at this scale. With solar awarded most of the capacity in the first three RESS auctions, plus a substantial rump of projects working through the planning and grid processes, there is a utility scale pipeline in excess of the target. Microgeneration – the rate of homes installing solar doubled between 2021 and 2022, and nearly doubled again in 2023. MaREI researchers conducted an assessment indicating that there are approximately 1 million homes suitable for microgeneration. Commercial and industrial – policy moved a bit later here than the other segments, but projects are beginning to come through at volume. Between installations connected and working their way through the connection process, there are thousands of projects seeking to generate. In short, there is a substantial volume of solar coming to the Irish system in the short and medium term.
