Taiwan records approach of 13 Chinese PLA aircraft, six vessels in past day According to the Taiwanese military, 10 aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and flew into the island’s air defense identification zone HONG KONG, July 2/ Taiwan registered the approach of 13 aircraft of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and seven warships of the PLA Navy near the island in the past day. "As of 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday (10:00 p.m. GMT on Monday - TASS), 13 PLA aircraft and six navy vessels were tracked in the vicinity of Taiwan," the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense said in a statement on X. According to the Taiwanese military, 10 aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and flew into the island’s air defense identification zone. In response, Taiwan sent aircraft, deployed ground-based air defense systems and issued radio warnings to monitor them. Taiwan established its air defense identification zone unilaterally. It covers the water area around the island, the Taiwan Strait and sectors of the airspace over three provinces in mainland China, namely Fujian, Jiangxi and Zhejiang. Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949, when the remnants of the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled there after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Pakistan's JF-17 Thunder fighter jet has crashed for the fifth time in 13 years, raising concerns about its reliability and maintenance issues. The latest crash occurred on June 5, 2024, in the Jhang district of Punjab, Pakistan. Despite the crash, the pilot successfully ejected using the Martin-Baker PK16LE Seat. The JF-17 fighter jet is a joint development between Pakistan and China, and is manufactured 58% in Pakistan and 42% in China. It is considered the workhorse of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), with around 150 jets in service. However, a significant number of them remain grounded due to maintenance issues. The JF-17 has been plagued by technical issues, including problems with its engine, radar, and weapons systems. The jet's indigenously developed Link-17 data link does not have a sufficient data transfer rate, and it cannot be integrated with the Link-16 of the Pakistani F-16s. Additionally, the jet does not have an effective Beyond Visual Range (BVR) or Airborne Interception Radar. Despite its flaws, the JF-17 has been exported to countries such as Nigeria and Myanmar. However, Myanmar has grounded its fleet of JF-17s due to technical malfunctions, and Nigeria has opted for Italian firm Leonardo's M-346FA aircraft instead of additional JF-17s. The latest version of the JF-17, the Block 3, has been described as a "fourth-generation plus" by PAF officials.
