ACI EUROPE's April 2024 air traffic report shows good news for European aviation. Passenger numbers rose 8.5% compared to April 2023, bringing them very close to pre-pandemic levels. In fact, traffic is now only 0.2% below April 2019 figures! 👏 Congrats to Borealis Alliance and its members AirNav Ireland, Avinor, Estonian Air Navigation Services (EANS)/Lennuliiklusteeninduse AS, Fintraffic ANS, Isavia ANS, Naviair, NATS, LFV and Latvijas Gaisa Satiksme for completing Part 2 of the Borealis FRA implementation Project.    ✅ The Borealis Free Route Airspace (FRA) was extended by joining the Scottish, Irish and Icelandic Airspaces to the already implemented within the NEFRA (North European Free Route Airspace) Programme.     🛫 This implementation project contributes to the deployment of the #SESAR Deployment Programme "Family 3.2.2 Enhanced FRA Operations” in #Denmark, #Finland, #Ireland, #Latvia, #Estonia, #Norway, #Iceland, #UK and #Sweden.    👌 This project has enabled all the members of Borealis to develop and implement their respective programmes increasing FRA operations throughout the collective Borealis airspace.     💚 It is part of other projects conducted by the Borealis Alliance and will complement the Cross Border Free Route implementation generating up to 0,5M tons of CO2 #savings, besides #fuel and #capacity improvements.      🎤 Reynir Sigurdsson: "The Borealis Alliance is a pioneer in implementing a cross-border, free route airspace (FRA) among its nine national airspaces. Lion Air Group is the latest low cost carrier to introduce stricter cabin baggage size policies. The revised policy affects the dimensions and types of baggage that can be carried onboard for free by passengers. The new rules insist bags must be a maximum of 35 x 35 x 30 cm and weigh under 10kg. Non compliant bags will incur charges, on a sliding scale, depending on the degree to which they are over the limits. Lion’s new size policy compares to the 40 x 20 x 25 cm rule, for free hand luggage, on Ryanair and 45 x 36 x 20 cm on easyJet. Whilst both these European carriers do allow larger cabin bags, when other services are purchased, this just emphasises the lack of consistency, on cabin baggage size rules, between different airlines. Something which is both confusing for passengers and frustrating when their trip involves travelling on multiple carriers. In the same announcement, Lion have also stated that “Cardboard-shaped baggage”, “Styrofoam-shaped baggage” and “Wooden pallet-shaped baggage” are prohibited on board too, for safety reasons. On Friday (today), Malta International Airport plc (MIA) CEO Alan Borg, during a press conference, announced that the airport had welcomed 4.1 million passengers, “in its best-performing first half to date.” During the first six months of the year, passenger movements registered a year-on-year increase of 18.4 per cent, outperforming Southern European peers. This includes Italy, Greece and Spain. Figures indicate that March was the fastest-growing month of the period, surpassing 2023 levels by 30 per cent, followed by February (an increase of 25 per cent) and January (an increase of 23 per cent). The company also reported increased income from both its aviation and non-aviation segments, with revenue for the first half of the year totalling €66.4 million and a net profit of €22.1 million. “We are entering the second half of 2024 in a solid financial position, one which has enabled out company to distribute its highest interim dividend to date to shareholders and continue to invest in the development of MIA,” Mr Borg said. Earlier, stockbroker Paul Bonello had alleged that a trade involving the listed company’s shares involved some form of insider trading. In response, MIA said that it has a “significant track record of communication with the market over time.” Furthermore, it added that it regularly issued monthly announcements on passenger numbers, quarterly financial statements, and company updates ahead of board meetings scheduled to consider the approval of financial statements and the declaration of dividends. Additionally, it also pointed out that it had previously disclosed that the Board of Directors would consider the proposal of an interim dividend at Thursday’s board meeting. #WhosWho #Malta #Tourism

✈ The Australian Aviation Network Overview Report for October 2024 is now available ✈ Highlights include: ➡ In October 2024, the Australian aviation network recorded a three per cent increase in daily flights compared to the previous month, primarily driven by domestic traffic while international flights have plateaued this year.     ➡ Short-term volatility remains a key feature for our sector. Connectivity and choice in domestic regional markets has not fully recovered since the exit of Bonza in April. Inbound passengers from top markets such as China, Japan and the United States remain below pre-pandemic levels.     ➡ Based on the latest available data from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE), the overall industry OTP was three percentage points higher than the previous month, as industry focused on lifting capacity to meet the surge in demand during the school holiday period and major sporting events. Our industry’s capability to better prepare for and respond to disruptions is still a key focus area to deliver a more predictable month-on-month experience for the travelling public.     ➡ In October 2024, 0.2 per cent of total network flight delays were attributed to Airservices with 0.8 per cent of flights impacted. Fine tuning demand/capacity balancing with Digital Twin Technology has enabled a steady improvement in network management, with ground delay hours at the lowest level in 30 months.     ➡ Airspace service variations reached the lowest level in the last 30 months. Tower service variations also continued to trend downwards, largely due to increased hours of coverage at Parafield and Avalon. However, the consistency of our service performance in some areas is still not at the levels expected by our customers and stakeholders. David Ludlow explores the case of Anderson v CAE Crewing Services Ltd (EAT May 2024), where CAE Crewing Services Ltd (the Supplier) faced disability discrimination claims. Anderson, a cabin crew member with bipolar disorder and a heart condition, alleged discrimination by aviation medical examiners acting as agents for the Supplier. Initially dismissed, the Employment Appeal Tribunal clarified that independent contractor status doesn’t negate an agency relationship. Suppliers can be liable for discriminatory acts of their agents, even if they are independent contractors.
