Government Revenue Surplus of €500m in Q1 as revenue and Expenditure rise. The government achieved a surplus of €500m in the first quarter of the year, with both revenue and expenditure seeing year-on-year increases. According to the CSO (Central Statistics Office Ireland) , tax revenue in Q1 reached €28.8bn, up by €1.3bn from the same period in 2023. This growth was primarily fueled by a €400m rise in social contributions and an additional €100m in investment income. On the expenditure side, there was a €1.4bn increase, totaling €28.3bn. CSO statistician Paul McElvaney attributed this rise to higher pay, increased social benefits, and a surge in gross fixed capital formation, highlighting investments made by local companies. #GovernmentSurplus #RevenueGrowth #ExpenditureIncrease #EconomicUpdate Brightwater Executive

According to KPMG’s 2024 Global Tech Report, Irish companies are lagging behind the global average in boosting profits through tech updates, with only 72% reporting profit increases compared to 87% globally. Though fewer Irish companies struggle to keep pace with tech change (74% versus 78% globally), only 43% say they review and update value-tracking metrics to stay aligned with market changes. AI adoption remains limited in Ireland, with just 24% deploying it at scale, despite 70% noting productivity gains.

Anaerobic Digestion and our recently announced National Biomethane Strategy - the benefits for Ireland Great interview with prof Jerry D Murphy from MaREI on RTE with Claire Byrne - well worth a listen. Jerry very eloquently explaining to Claire, in plain language, the circular energy system/circular economy benefits and the 3 products of anaerobic digestion. - bio-methane (replacing fossil methane) - bio-fertiliser (replacing fertiliser from fossil fuels) - bio-genic CO2 (replacing conventionally produced CO2 ) The Danish experience also highlighted -where 39% of gas demand now met by biomethane from anaerobic digestion - real lessons for Ireland #eng4climate #biomethane

It is fascinating to see the changes from Year to year in our Irish Work Trend Index Research. For this research we survey Irish workers across all sectors, revealing the dynamic shifts in Irish organisations in 2024 compared to previous years. So when I asked #copilot what were the main changes in Microsoft Ireland's 2024 Work Trend index vs the 2023 version it came up with the following:   - Employee Movement: There was a notable increase in employee movement within Ireland, with nearly 1 in 4 workers changing employers in the past year, which is higher than the 19% in 2023, and 14% in 2022. This change was primarily driven by younger generations seeking better well-being, career advancement, and work-life balance. - AI Skilling: A significant 65% of workers welcomed AI skilling, recognizing its potential to accelerate career growth and enhance job satisfaction. This is a new insight that highlights the growing importance of AI in the workplace - Hybrid Work Challenges: The need to bridge the gap between in-office and at-home experiences became more evident, with an increase in feelings of isolation and demotivation among remote workers, especially amongst Gen Z and millennials - AI Adoption: The use of generative AI nearly doubled in the last six months, with 75% of global knowledge workers using it. However, AI adoption rates in Ireland were lower at 29%, signifying less access to AI technology for Irish workers despite their demand The research shows the need to bridge the gap between in-office and at-home experiences to combat isolation and demotivation, especially among younger workers. 🚨 Sandyford Business District (SBD) Calls for Strategic Investment in Infrastructure 🚨 In our pre-budget submission, Sandyford Business District has called on the Irish government to invest the €13 billion Apple windfall tax into critical infrastructure—particularly transport and housing. This investment will be key to enhancing Ireland’s competitiveness and tackling immediate challenges such as rising inflation, labour shortages, and the need to reduce business costs. Among the top priorities outlined by SBD are: Sustainable transport initiatives like extending MetroLink to Sandyford, easing commutes and reducing emissions. Affordable housing to attract and retain talent, supporting business growth and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Promoting long-term competitiveness through upskilling, innovation, and addressing inflationary pressures. “People don't do what you expect but what you inspect.” In video is Fidelma Boyce of PwC Ireland, on the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) For companies with +500 staff the data on your workforce today will be reported in a few months’ time &  it will be under the scrutiny of an external professional entity. + Will this create a real focus on truly workforce wide action? + Climate action is a tech enabled industry, where is the same for workforce optimisation? + Is the better optimisation of talent into the future of business, a legitimate area for business, technology / AI? The commercial climate action industry ($2 trillion -2018) is intrinsically tech enabled. In Ireland alone the excessive costs to hire from agency fees, relocation & work permit costs from long distance hiring of him, is about outdated services & methods, not the availability of talent. Legacy petrol over electric. The EU STEM workforce alone of 75 million people is 52% female & nearly totally unused. The finance workforce of Poland alone is three times that of Ireland & before you say housing, tech can enable the housing capacity of Ireland having the 3rd lowest average home occupancy in the EU. #Bytes_to_Beds. When the Whole Village Hiring Platform delivered 50 : 50 gender balanced shortlists for a Nasdaq company seeking to make plastic that is not based on oil, it had to overcome the fact that the USA plastics industry is 20% female.   The eventual hire was male, but a process had ‘assured’ a better check on the total viability of who was best, like climate this change can be tech enabled. The focus on gender balance at the start of a hiring process is supported through the Government backed Balance For Better Business. It is expanding from boards to leadership teams by 2028, by ‘Mandating’ gender-balanced candidate lists. The challenge is how to enable the mandate & extend it to all levels, tech to enable mandates. News here from Neale Richmond TD on Ireland’s Women in Finance Charter 4% growth at the management level across 65,000 jobs (more than the entire indigenous Irish tech sector) is great, it impacts a wider village, not just the top table. Protecting share price has created competition for progress on climate. Is diversity as a not for profit collaboration, about a moral need, not a business benefit? #WVH alone has already removed recruitment agency, hotel and letting agent costs. More diversity to cut costs. Recruitment strategies & requests for balanced shortlists from search firms bring incremental change from the top down? If the AI revolution for workforce is coming, do revolutions ever start from the top down? How will this assurance measure change things? As former IBM CEO & Chairman Louis V.
