Today, BDO Ireland and Nursing Homes Ireland launched the 2023/2024 Nursing Homes Ireland Report, supported by Bank of Ireland, revealing significant financial and operational pressures on the sector: ◾ 51% of responding nursing homes not profitable in 2023. ◾ Some 30 private and voluntary homes (net 15) close in two years since last report. ◾ Despite challenges, private and voluntary sector adds 599 beds.  ◾ Average 60 bed public nursing home receives €2m more subvention per annum than equivalent size private home. ◾ Disparity also in private and voluntary Fair Deal rates across regions, with average size nursing home in Donegal receiving almost €660k less than Dublin equivalent. The report underscores the widening gap between the cost of care and Fair Deal funding rates, calling for immediate government action to address these disparities. Ever since the hospitality VAT rate increased last September in Ireland, over 600 restaurants, cafés, and food businesses have closed down. The Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) is urging the government to revert to the 9% VAT rate in Budget 2025 to prevent further closures. RAI CEO Adrian Cummins emphasises the "abnormal level of closures," particularly in rural areas, and calls for long-term viability instead of short-term grants. The Irish authorities also announced a limited transitional arrangement for travellers between 10 July and 9 August 2024. If you have booked your travel before 10 July 2024 and are travelling to Ireland before 10 August. You may be able to travel without a visa. However, you will need to present: ⭐Your valid passport ⭐Documentary proof from your airline (Date of Purchase, Passenger Name, Flight Number & Date of Travel) Clarification: ⭐If you have booked your tickets before 10 July and are travelling after 9 August, you must obtain a visa. ⭐ If you have booked your tickets after 10 July, you must obtain a visa, regardless of travel date ⭐ If you are a valid IRP holder, you don't need a separate visa to enter Ireland. BUDGET DATE ANNOUNCED The State Opening of Parliament took place on 17 July and the King’s Speech set out the measures that the government intends to introduce during the next session of parliament. Other than a mention of the proposal to remove the VAT exemption for private school fees, very little was said about measures that will affect tax for businesses and individuals. Instead, we must wait for the Labour government’s first budget in order to learn about their tax plans.
