Our latest CFO Survey is published today - read the summary report at the below link. Whilst there is still high levels of uncertainty among CFOs; expectations around Revenue (3 in 4 expect revenues to increase over the next 12 months) and inflation (expectations that this will be 3% for next 12 months) compounded by interest rate reductions sees 60% of Irish CFOs more optimistic about their business than they were six months ago (and Irish CFOs are nearly twice as optimistic as the European average!!). I was delighted to discuss BioPharmaChem Ireland’s policy priorities for Government, “Global Impact – The Importance of the Irish BioPharmaChem Industry,” with Mediaplanet. Today, Mediaplanet launched their LifeSciences Campaign in the Irish Independent. The BioPharmaChem sector is a powerhouse in the Irish economy, contributing €116 billion in exports annually. It includes over 120 multinational and indigenous companies, directly employing 48,000 highly skilled individuals—a 61% increase since 2016, with a further 21,000 forecast by 2027 according to the EGFSN for BioPharma. Our policy document is an ambitious blueprint to secure Ireland’s future in the global BioPharmaChem landscape. Ibec published its new Economic Outlook earlier today, forecasting GDP growth of 2% in 2024 and 2.7% in 2025. The report highlights that, while the Irish economy is experiencing some moderation in growth after five years of remarkable expansion, the economic outlook remains positive. However, the Outlook also notes that under-delivery in critical infrastructure is constraining the potential for growth in both domestic businesses and foreign direct investment. Alexion and DHL Launch Ireland's First Pharma Sustainability Partnership 🌍 Alexion and DHL have announced Ireland's first pharmaceutical sustainability partnership aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from medicine deliveries by up to 90%. By switching to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, the companies will convert multiple transport routes across Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Europe to deliver medicines from Alexion's Athlone and Dublin sites. 🌱💊 HVO, made from biomass like used cooking oil, can be used in existing vehicles without needing new infrastructure, enabling DHL to make over 500 deliveries annually to 10 countries with significantly lower emissions. 🚀 At Hanley, the launch of Ireland's first pharmaceutical sustainability partnership between Alexion and DHL marks a significant milestone in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in medicine delivery. We have known for some time that the cost of doing business is the biggest issue for @Ibec members. There is now more urgency than ever for Ireland and the EU to address many long-standing competitiveness challenges and to take immediate measures to support productivity and business viability. #GE24 must have the competitiveness agenda to the fore. We need to see tangible and practical policy proposals that will support a prosperous enterprise environment and ensure that businesses across the country can continue to contribute effectively to the social and economic fabric of our communities. Ibec members are telling us that energy costs must be addressed and the approach to regulation improved and labour costs must be moderated. In addition, we need to up our game on research and innovation and ensure that our income tax system supports workers and enterprise. Great to meet Minister Jack Chambers this week with the team in Chartered Accountants Ireland to discuss the CCAB-I's Pre Budget 2025 submission. Thanks to the Minister and his colleagues for such an open, frank and engaging discussion. Good to hear the Governement is considering scrapping the proposed changes to CGT retirement relief on the transfer of business. The proposed changes , if implemented, would have resulted in some businesses not being transferred until the current owner passed away or being sold to fund the tax. With the need to encourage Irish companies to scale and remain with family owners inappropriate tax provisions would have a negative effect . Forvis Mazars were delighted to assist various organisations in highlighting the practical impact of poorly researched legislative proposals. Perhaps a bit more consultation on the impact of proposed legislative changes would be best all round in the future.

Fantastic afternoon at the IoD Northern Ireland leadership and governance summit. Key takeaways: 1. Alan Armstrong, Chairman and CEO of Almac spoke passionately about his career journey and the people and events that shaped it - in particular, the late Sir Allen McClay. The 4Ps important to him: People; product; presentation; and professionalism. Profit will follow. He encouraged us to look for the leadership skills in everyone not just the high performers. 2. ESG will find you even if you are not looking for it. The “S” should not be the “middle child”. 3. Generative AI is developing at pace, is cool and is also potentially dangerous. However, if understood can support leaders to focus on increasing productivity. 4. Nick Wallis provided his investigative view on the Post Office Horizon Scandal - wow did that actually happen! 5 of his 10 corporate governance takeaways: “Know everything about what you are buying; know everything about your business; talk to everyone; follow the money; and get high quality external advice”.

Very positive news for the Pharma sector as the value of Irish exports has grown from €6.2 billion to €72.4 billion in the first four months of 2024. CSO figures show exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased by €3.5 billion (66%) to €8.8 billion in April alone 📈💊 This rebound in Pharma activity is very encouraging given the concerns of a slump last year due to a collapse in demand for Covid vaccines and medications – triggering a downturn in Irish Pharma exports.
