Arthritis Ireland's Counting the Cost of Arthritis report reveals an average annual cost of €3,538 per person, with even higher average expenses of €4,281 for those reporting ‘poor’ health status, shedding light on the significant financial and personal burden borne by individuals living with arthritis. Results from a recent clinical trial (NCT05668377) conducted by David Burke and his team at Beacon Hospital in Dublin provide valuable insights into the performance of the Apple Watch in detecting arrhythmia. Unlike some manufacturers who exclude inconclusive tests, our study uncovered essential findings, most notably that there are inconclusive tests remaining even after repeated measures. Showing that reporting performance measures excluding inconclusive may not be valid. The Apple Watch algorithm showed improvement with multiple recordings, however it still fell short of the performance of the PulseAI algorithm. Excitingly, the PulseAI neural network outperformed the Apple Watch algorithm (algorithm version 2.0) in our trial across all assessment criteria. This accomplishment highlights its superior accuracy in minimising inconclusive results while boosting sensitivity and specificity. These results are particularly important in the context of human review, as inconclusive tests are labour intensive to interpret. Given that Apple sells between 30-50M apple watches a year, the number of inconclusive tests provide a real challenge to healthcare systems globally. #ecg #apple #applewatch #ai #digitalhealth

Building Momentum in Vision Technology   Digital Manufacturing Ireland (DMI) and Boston Scientific proudly hosted the kick-off meeting for the Visual Cognitive Manufacturing Group (VCMG) collaboration group, focusing on the Qualification of Automated Vision Inspections.   With close to 100 participants joining virtually, the session demonstrated the power of addressing critical industry challenges and the value of collaborative efforts in driving adoption of vision systems.   Highlights from the kick-off meeting: > Introduced the VCMG mission to advance vision systems in manufacturing. > Explored challenges for validating AI and machine vision systems including tackling compliance, validation, and a lack of industry examples. > Engaged participants to shape future discussions, ensuring an industry-driven and collaborative approach. > Shared plans for quarterly virtual meetings and an annual face-to-face event to deepen engagement.   The VCMG aims to position Ireland as a global leader in vision technology for manufacturing, fostering partnerships between academia, industry, and tech innovators.   Interested in joining this journey? 🔧 R&D in Prosthetics: Why Ireland Needs to Step Up 🔧 Ireland is making waves as a global MedTech leader, but when it comes to research and development in advanced prosthetics, we’re still playing catch-up. While we’ve made significant strides in medical devices and healthcare technologies, the focus on prosthetic innovation remains limited, and the numbers show it. 🔑 Key Issues: R&D Investment: Globally, the market for prosthetic devices is projected to grow to $3.5 billion by 2027, driven by advances in AI and robotics. Yet, in Ireland, less than 10% of MedTech R&D funding is allocated to prosthetic innovations. Comparatively, countries like the US and Germany invest far more into this area, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Talent Gap: Ireland is home to over 40,000 MedTech professionals, but only a fraction specialize in the areas of AI, robotics, and biomechanics crucial for next-gen prosthetics. We need to nurture and expand this talent pool to compete on the global stage. Collaboration & Partnerships: While the Irish MedTech sector sees strong collaborations, only a small portion of these efforts are focused on prosthetics. Countries like Japan and Sweden have shown how effective industry-university-government partnerships can fuel innovation—something Ireland needs to harness further.
