HR shouldn’t be the first point of contact for employees - FACT! After 20 years in the internal and external talent world, I still see companies making the same mistake over and over. Today, I received a brief for an HRBP with the following responsibility: "Regularly engage with US and EMEA employees as their go-to contact, addressing concerns and mitigating risk. Proactively listen, ask questions, and stay in tune with the organisation." Here’s the potential issue: If HR is truly doing its job well, HR shouldn’t be the first point of contact for employees—that’s the role of the people manager right? Or am I going mad??? When I consult with organisations about their people/HR attraction strategies, I tend to emphasise (depending on scale) that the most successful companies ensure HR is not the primary point of contact for employees. It’s my duty too, but sometimes told I’m ‘just’ a recruiter??!! IMO the relationship between employees and their manager is the key to engagement. Countless studies back this up. Even if you have the most approachable HR team, if the manager is failing, people will still leave.
