Interesting article in The Irish Times this morning by Martin Wall indicating that the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) is considering using artificial intelligence (AI) software to support the drafting of its board minutes. Worth a read if you are on a Board or in the Corporate Governance space as no doubt will have implications down the line.

Results from a recent clinical trial (NCT05668377) conducted by David Burke and his team at Beacon Hospital in Dublin provide valuable insights into the performance of the Apple Watch in detecting arrhythmia. Unlike some manufacturers who exclude inconclusive tests, our study uncovered essential findings, most notably that there are inconclusive tests remaining even after repeated measures. Showing that reporting performance measures excluding inconclusive may not be valid. The Apple Watch algorithm showed improvement with multiple recordings, however it still fell short of the performance of the PulseAI algorithm. Excitingly, the PulseAI neural network outperformed the Apple Watch algorithm (algorithm version 2.0) in our trial across all assessment criteria. This accomplishment highlights its superior accuracy in minimising inconclusive results while boosting sensitivity and specificity. These results are particularly important in the context of human review, as inconclusive tests are labour intensive to interpret. Given that Apple sells between 30-50M apple watches a year, the number of inconclusive tests provide a real challenge to healthcare systems globally. #ecg #apple #applewatch #ai #digitalhealth

I was delighted to discuss BioPharmaChem Ireland’s policy priorities for Government, “Global Impact – The Importance of the Irish BioPharmaChem Industry,” with Mediaplanet. Today, Mediaplanet launched their LifeSciences Campaign in the Irish Independent. The BioPharmaChem sector is a powerhouse in the Irish economy, contributing €116 billion in exports annually. It includes over 120 multinational and indigenous companies, directly employing 48,000 highly skilled individuals—a 61% increase since 2016, with a further 21,000 forecast by 2027 according to the EGFSN for BioPharma. Our policy document is an ambitious blueprint to secure Ireland’s future in the global BioPharmaChem landscape. Today we’re showcasing 3 innovators in Ireland selected to present at LSI Europe ‘24 in Portugal: 1. Declan Soden — Mirai Medical → Its ePORE therapy is a unique precision therapy platform that targets and destroy tumor tissue without harming surrounding healthy tissue. The minimally invasive technology delivers pulsed electrical fields that create pores in the cell membrane of tumor cells, catalyzing cellular death. Mirai's technology has been developed for external (skin) and internal (endoscopic) tumor treatment. 2. Finbar (Barry) Dolan — VERSONO MEDICAL LTD → Developing an intravascular ultrasonic platform to improve the crossing of severe occlusions in the peripheral vasculature. The device will prepare a working lumen to support endovascular therapy in patients with chronic total occlusions (CTOs) and critical limb ischemia (CLI). 3. Stephen Cox — InVera Medical → Developing a catheter-based therapy for chronic venous disease. The device uses non-thermal energy to disrupts the inner vessel lining, resulting in natural scarring and vessel closure that diverts blood flow away from diseased vessels.
