KYC and why are Banks/Central Bank in Kenya is still fixated on the postal address? If you try to open a bank account in Kenya recently or sign up for internet banking services; you will have to provide a postal address. If you haven't opened an account in a long time, you probably forgot what it takes to have a functional account and not a tiered KYC account. Maybe its time the regulator re-examines this requirement which was embedded in the regulations with the following stipulated benefits of physical verification (most of which dont hold water anymore) 1. Utility bills - with the launch of pre-paid meters and purchasing units via mobile money; this is no longer practical. PAYG means the electricity companies for instance don't mail bills. Most residences now charge water as part of the rent. 2. Bank statements - the banks will ask you for a referral to open an account or "someone who knows you." They prefer their customers too. Really? The success behind a mobile money wallet is all it needs is an ID to open an account. Because the bank staff have a target of opening accounts; they will find someone to include in the forms. irony is all you want is to deposit some money and someone makes it next to impossible for new starters. No wonder MSMEs choose alternatives. 3. Government issued IDs - This is valid and probably the most practical of all requirements. 4. Rental agreement or leases - Unnecessary breach of data privacy. Its like the online sites that ask you for your life history in order to make a purchase. When you pay cash, you dont even have to state your name. And people wonder why cash is still king? I recall a lady from BCEAO stating that the Kenyan mobile money system gave away too much personal information when confirming a payment. They use minimal. Leases should only apply for asset financing/mortgages and or massive loans. Outside that, why is that information needed? 5. Postal box - how many people have it? Who uses snail mail anymore? If you pass any post office; you will see a lot of empty boxes for rent as people shifted to online communication. Postal offices overall need to revamp their services and offer other distribution services for sectors. If you tell the banks you dont have one; you will have to supply one even if its for an employer; or a friend or one given to you by their referrals. Now they email you the bank statements. What is this postal address for? When you challenge - you are told "Its a regulatory requirement." Policies and regulations are not cast on stone and needs to move with the innovations.

Bailout or Tough Love? The Great Bank Failure Debate! The Central Bank of Nigeria revocation of Heritage Bank's license has brought the longstanding "bailout vs failure" debate back into focus. Should regulators like the CBN allow struggling banks to fail, or should they intervene with bailouts and rescues? There are valid arguments on both sides. Pros of Letting Banks Fail: Moral Hazard - Bailing out troubled banks reduces their incentive to manage risks prudently if they expect to be rescued. Allowing failures promotes market discipline. Fair Competition - Those who make poor decisions and mismanage risks should exit, allowing better-run banks to reallocate resources and thrive. This drives efficiency. Taxpayer Burden - Bank bailouts put the cost on taxpayers rather than stockholders/creditors who took the risks and profits during good times. Creative Destruction - A degree of failure allows a restructuring and weeding out of weaker players, promoting innovation and entry of new business models. Cons of Letting Banks Fail: Contagion Risk - The failure of one bank can trigger panic and runs on other banks due to interbank exposure and lack of confidence, destabilizing the system. Credit Crunch - If many banks fail simultaneously, it causes a severe credit contraction, hurting businesses and economic growth. Too Big to Fail - Allowing massive systematically important banks to collapse could have catastrophic ripple effects across markets and the economy. Loss of Information Capital - Even if assets are transferred, bank failures lead to losses of institutional knowledge, relationships and financial expertise. There are merits to both perspectives. Regulators must carefully weigh potential systemic risks and economic fallout against moral hazard concerns. A balanced approach could allow regulated wind-downs for smaller banks while still protecting the large, well-capitalized institutions crucial to overall financial stability. What's your view on this complex issue? Should the CBN make banks more resilient upfront through tighter supervision, higher capital buffers and resolution planning? Or maintain flexibility to provide discretionary interventions when warranted? Perhaps a mixed framework distinguishing TBTF institutions? If I make a post that Zenith bank or GTBank is looking for marketers, a great number of people will rush at the offer, they'll even reduce their ages to fit into the requirements. They'll be ready to wear suit and report to work 7am-5pm daily. They'll be ready to go anywhere possible to talk and get customers for the bank, They'll be ready to work under stress, and struggle to meet targets set for them...and so on, only for about 100k monthly. Tell this same person of another opportunity where he'll be his own boss, report to work when he wants, work at his pace, no targets, just market the opportunity to people, and earn more than 100k Weekly (400k monthly). This same person will suddenly realise he can't talk to people 🤔🤷😂😂 Mindset is everything. You're going for a lesser offer because your mind tells you it's more prestigious? Job hunting? Don’t let a scammer steal your personal details from your CV. Recently, a “headhunter” DM’d me, claiming to represent PwC. Her profile was flawless such as big-name companies, elite education, and a polished photo. But something didn’t feel right. She was based in Lagos, Nigeria, yet her profile picture showed a Caucasian woman. Not impossible, but definitely a red flag. Then came the urgent requests: spammed comments and demands for immediate action. No real recruiter operates like this. Something wasn’t adding up, so I reported the fake profile to LinkedIn for takedown. In today’s digital age, scammers know how to play the game, but they always leave clues if you know where to look. So, if you spot profiles like this, question everything. Cross-check company details. Look for inconsistencies. And most importantly, trust your gut. Can You give what you don't have? Few Days ago I dropped a comment which came in form of a question under one of Oreoluwa Bukola 's post. Here was my Question " Dear Oreoluwa Bukola Thank you for always answering my many questions in career despite not even asking. I just come on your page and get answers. I have one question I still want to be clear on... Is it possible that one can groom and build a Team from scratch and they start showing tangible results but the Team Lead can't produce that same result as an individual? I have seen this happen and I wonder if a Team lead without results can actually groom people to makes things happen. As always she hit the nail on the head and this was what I was able to deduce from her response (You could also learn a few things from this as a Team Lead) 📌 As a Team lead, You should be resourceful or have the resources to Lead! So, Yes! you can sometimes give what you don't have but the question is - how long? is it healthy and sustainable? 📌 You should Lead at the front. This will be easy for you to facilitate others and answer their many questions. Show workings! 📌 Don't be non-chalant about not producing results. After all, what story or experience do you share if you are a non-resultful Leader. My fear as a Team Lead in the sales Department is leading a resultful Team and being a Leader without results! I love it when I hit that monthly sales Champion board and I see my Team members on same board with me! That's all the satisfaction that keeps me going! Do not relax, Lead by example and watch your team accord you that same level of respect! Go and be a Leader with Results Today! Selah🌹

*WHEN WILL A MAN EVER ENJOY IN LIFE?* BY AYODELE ADEOYE: from Oluwarotimi Omopariola's wall. When I was a little boy, I was told severally not to give in for enjoyment, rather work hard and face my books [Studies]. They painted a picture of "don't worry, deny yourself now and enjoy later". This was all I heard from my parents and those ahead of me all through my primary school and secondary school. It was another phase of self denial when I got into the tertiary institution. Coupled with living a Christian life characterized with rigorous fasting, vigil and many other self denials. My enjoyment was further postponed to a future time. After graduation, I had the impression that when I get married I will rest from some level of self denials. But my dream never materialised. This is the time emphasis is laid on building my future - a time I must eat less in other to secure my future and that of my children. The loads and burdens of family began to weigh me down. School fees, family bills and future security won't let me enjoy the little I sweat to make. I had to keep saving from the little I made, while I sacrifice those things my soul earnestly desires. As one began to climb the ladder of 50, nature began to deny you some privileges. Those food you like to eat are being taken away from you for health reasons. Strength to enjoy life began to diminish at 50. If you have accumulated wealth, others have to help you "eat" [spend] it, while you subject yourself to fruits and vegetables. What a life of bitterness. When you had what it takes to enjoy life, you were barred from enjoying it, just to secure your future. Now you are in the future you sacrificed for, but you are being monitored by your doctor. Your diet is streamlined and limited to what the doctor prescribed. When will Eccl. 2:24 come to pass? "There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of GOD". And Eccl. 3:13 "And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of GOD". I think there is an error somewhere? Why will a man work all the days of his life without enjoying his labour? This is an error. In an attempt to save money for future they are not sure of, many had gone to their early graves because of malnutrition, self medication and undue self denials. I strongly believe everything in life has a time according to Ecclesiastes 3: There is time for self denials and there is time for enjoyment. A time to give to your soul what it desires. A time to eat good food, wear nice clothes, travel to memorable places, and time to make merry. Life is not that long as we think. While working for your future, don't shutdown your present.

The Interswitch Group Career Fair 3.0 was an amazing experience. The day before the fair, I fell sick and almost thought I would not make it to the event. I am glad I felt better on the morning of the Fair and was able to make it even with the heavy downpour. I got to the event center and made sure to sit in front so I could see the event and the speakers clearly and soak in all the knowledge I could from these great minds. The first thing that struck me was how some of the speakers were ex-staff of Interswitch. I could tell that they were high-performing talents who still got recognition even after exiting. I learnt a lot of things from the speakers, Adora Ikwuemesi, Franklin Ali, IVIE TEMITAYO-IBITOYE, Robinta Aluyi, Debola Deji - Kurunmi, Lanre Adelanwa Basamta, and the CEO Mitchell Elegbe A.K.A Big Mitch. These industry experts shared their career journeys, struggles, and wins and it was so profound, engaging, and at some point emotional. Some of my take home from the event include: We are in the skills market, not the job market. So invest in skills. Sometimes it is better you are out of a job, so you can have a clear head. You are a product of your decision, if you do not like where you are then change your decision. Soft life comes after hard work. Conduct performance appraisals on your life regularly. Do not let money be the only driving factor in your career, have multiple sources of income so that you won't be dependent on money alone. There is pain and endurance in creating meaningful work. In the beginning, prioritize learning over earning. Where we are headed is defined by the image in our head of what we want to become. Aim to have a skill that is global, skills would be relevant in the next 10 years. Resilience is not about not falling when the wind has blown, it is about bouncing back. Career progression does not have to be linear (A, B, C, D, E). It could be A, B, A, C especially if you are transitioning to other fields It is okay to transition as many times as you want, we are human 'beings' we are supposed to evolve and not remain stagnant. There are seasons in life, a time to learn and earn. Understand the season where you are and give yourself grace. Do you resonate with any of the points? Please share your input. Oya Quickly do this, 1) Take out a percentage of all income coming to you, and tag it My Financial Freedom Fund. This is not meant to be tampered with you but invested or saved up to be invested into the right asset Classes. 2) Before you start the "wire wire", Sit down and write out a budget. A budget is not stuffy or restrictive, no! You've got it all wrong! A budget doesn't restrict you but rather gives you CONTROL over your cash flow. Here's a simple template you can use for your Budgeting technique 👇 The 50:30:20 Rule 50% goes to Needs 30% goes to Wants(Flex Money) 20% goes to Savings and Investments. Here's a sidenote: This rule is not static, you can twist the statics to fit your current financial state; However if you are young person, this is time to save and invest aggressively! You won't be young forever. Lastly, you have to correct your mindset about planning your finances. You don't need to wait to start making "big money" before you start being good with your money. ====================================== A Favorite Quote of mine from Robert Kiyosaki goes thus " It's not about how much you make but what you do with your money and how hard your money works for you that matters" To win in finances, you've got to stay in charge by creating systems over your cash flows. Borrowing is increasingly becoming a hassle for Nigerians. Amidst the continued increase in inflation rates, a crunch in the standard of living and an impending protest , The Central Bank of Nigeria has increased the Monetary Policy Rate by 50bps from 26.25% to 26.75%. The CBN governor however promises to to take necessary measures to bring inflation under control. We still don't know what these measures are or how he plans to reduce the inflation rate from its staggering 34.19% rate in June 2024. This however means that interest rates on borrowings will increase.

Dear young employee, What ever is worth doing at all is worth doing well. My friend Bayo Adedeji says “what ever your hands find to do, do it welllll” It is a good thing to be good at your job however employers aren’t only looking for “good at your job”, the following things also count 1. Dependability and reliability 2. Good and ethical attitude to work 3. Probablem solving 4. Taking initiative 5. How receptive you are to feedback 6. Collaboration 7. Team hang outs ( trust me you need to be friends with your work colleagues, it makes you work life a lot easier) 8. You don’t know it all, no one is the custodian of all knowledge. Pay attention, be teachable and always be willing to learn. Keep learning, learn up, learn down, learn sideways. 9. Never be afraid to ask questions. You are not foolish for asking, if you don’t know, you don’t know. No one will kill you if you ask. 10. Own up to your mistakes, don’t dwell on them but learn from them. 11. Stay away from office politics, in my opinion it doesn’t end well. 12. You don’t have to destroy others or shit on their work to make your way to the top. 13. Show up, even when you don’t feel like it and the odds are against you. ( this picture was taken during one of the darkest times of my life). It may not always look like it, but your good work, good ethics and likability will speak for you. Finally instead of acting like you are doing something, be doing something. Ignore the LinkedIn /social media facade I wish you all the best.

I don't care whether you are for Tinubu, Atiku, or Peter Obi. But the moment your favourite's economic policy starts to weaken the "C" component in the aggregate macroeconomic model below 👇👇👇, it's best you advised them to reconsider their policy. Y = C + I + G + Xn Where Y = National economic output C = Domestic consumption I = Investment from businesses G = Government Expenditure Xn = Net Export No matter what macroeconomics course you learn, you are informed that "C" is the most important factor in the aggregate macroeconomic model. It contributes to about 60 % to 70 % of a country's output. This means that if you mess with the "C" component you risk an economic recession. But when nurtured, you'd promote economic productivity and prosperity. _________________________________________ I recall watching the movie "Too Big to Fail". I recommend that movie to all Economics and Finance students whether at graduate or undergraduate level. Set at the era of the 2008 financial crises, the erstwhile Federal Reserve Chair, Ben Bernanke warned the US Legislature that if they waited for the invisible "kinikan" market forces to restore the economy back to prosperity, then they all risked a global depression worse than the 1930s. In that movie, I critically learnt about the importance of household consumption. If you neglect it, you may never have an economy. And once the economic system collapses, be rest assured that anarchy is inevitable. The French Revolution had feature of economic hopelessness. And when man is faced with economic hopelessness, you'd likely find in him/her no different from wild beasts! No wonder John Maynard Keynes argued that humans have animal spirits? Today, the Tinubu administration seems to be ignoring the "C" component. Subsidy removal on all fronts, and the beliefs that the economy will self-regulate to prosperity are all funny to me! Don't get me wrong, I trained as a neoclassical economist. But when the market system is inefficient, you need government intervention. Ben Bernanke and Henry Paulson had to temporarily jettison their neoclassical ideals when the 2008 financial crises worsened. They sought government intervention. It was going to be a blood-bath both for the US and the entire global financial system! CBN data shows that between Q3 and Q4 of 2023, real household consumption in Nigeria dropped at an all-time-low of -10.9%! In December 2022, I lamented about the cashless policies and foresaw the crises of shortage in cash. I wrote articles putting out warnings. The outcome wasn't funny. This time, I passionately plead to anyone or any group of people who has or have Tinubu's listening ears. Tell him to adopt urgent policies that would address household consumption. There is no defeat for any President who acknowledges the pains of its people, and makes amend.
